D&D thread.What's your favorite Retro D&D game?dnd doesn't count.
>>4448850>What's your favorite Retro D&D game?Pool of Radiance, the first of the Goldbox FR series. I played it when it came out, so I have a nostalgic fondness for it. The whole series was good.>dnd doesn't count.Assuming you're talking about the PLATO software, why not? Because it wasn't technically a licensed product?
ToEE, Baldur's gate 1 (unmodded original version only) I really like the Mysteries of Westgate Neverwinter Night 2 expansion/campaign, it's a shame only 5 people played it.There is an excellent indie D&D game called Knights of the Chalice which uses 3.5 edition OGL rules and had the best enemy AI I've ever encountered in an RPG.
i seriously can't get into the first goldbox games, they have truly aged
>>4451243Persevere. They are great fun once you get used to the interface.
Baldur's Gate (and 2)Shattered Landshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZhZt8sYnbMI honestly think King of Dragons is better than the "official" licensed D&D arcade games. It is just more fun to play.
I've been looking into patching some SNES ROMs, and have some questions;1) Is there some trick to applying multiple patches on the same ROM? e.g. applying the english patch to Seiken Densetsu 3, followed by the title screen patch seems to ruin the ROM2) It seems that some patches result in a bad checksum even after repairing it with a checksum calculator, e.g. Final Fantasy VI Woolsey uncensored. Does this mean there is the ROM is now corrupt?3) Usually you can load in SNES9x and get that initial summary, where the text will be yellow if the checksum is bad. What does it mean when a repaired cheksum is 'ok' but the text is still yellow? e.g. FFV4) If a checksum has been successfully repaired, does that mean the patch was entirely successful without corrupting the ROM at all?5)If a patch recommended a v1.0 ROM but you use a v1.1 ROM and it 'worked', could there still be problems?
>>4449914a modification is first made inspecting the rom, and then a patch file is generated that contains information of the position of the modified bits and their new values, so1) as long as a group of patches dont modifiy the same position, they work togethera checksum is just a way to know if the file is exactly what you expected it to be, so 2) not necessarily, but it could be indicative that maybe the wrong rom was used initially, that is for a single patch, multi patches will always end in incorrect checksums... dunno about the repairs thoughwhich also means4) its also no guarantee, BPS patches on the other hand can confirm that the result is what was expected, regardless of rom chacksums5) impossible to answer that one, all the values the patch modifies could still be in the same position, or all but a few, and you would only find a glitch later.. but in any case with IPS or BPS you wouldn't be able to confirm success.
How do I run this on a modern Mac?
>>4451557Belzebub is shitty fan hack that only gets recommended for its QoL improvements. Avoid.>>4451569Solid reasoning there, chum.
>>4451601crying little bitch, the game fucking works great, looks great, has more features, you fucking assholes can never be happy with anything
>>4451598>installed via WINEFaggot, learn to check your sources, the mod isn't necessary and doesn't do anything for him in the Mac argument.
>>4451613then go fuck yourself I hope you don't get to play diablo in your shitty mac, motherfucker
>>4451618I'm not OP. Running Win10 on this PC and Diablo works just fine on it.But hey, thanks for being just as useless as a football bat.
What are your thoughts on the Tenchu games?I loved them and think they are some of the more underrated games out there. They are better stealth games than MGS.
>>4450341My mistake, Z (I call it Zero for some reason) was still a development of K2.
>>4448307Yeah man.Once I played Shinobido, I can no longer go back.
>>4450341>>4450345Well I'm just going by what I see on Wikipedia and they say FromSoftware owns the rights. Although Acquire could still make them if FromSoftware wants them to develop a game. FromSoftware has published most of the games in this series.
>>4443207I'm pretty sure I remember being able to do a rudimentary 2-player setting in debug mode. Also dicking about changing your character model was a lot of fun.
>>4447997Shit taste desu.
GBC game, if I recall it was mickey mouse or some disney character (possibly not) and you went around the world in this sidescrolling game, I distinctly recall a level where you would land and bounce off those canopys they have over windows, was maybe set in france that level. Anyone know what im talking about? I looked at the whole gbc and couldnt find what I was looking for.
Ninja Gaiden threadhow do you beat that fuck Jaquio?
>>4448991Pc engine version is easier overall, just play that
Stay on the ground until his projectiles drop offscreen and then quickly get up there and get a hit in. If you try and stay in the air or on the platforms they'll start homing in on you.
spinning slash ohkos both his forms
Run back and forth on the ground until he fires his projectiles, then just keep running in the direction you were going and you'll dodge them. Jump up and hit him in the back if he's in a good position for you to do so after you've dodged projectiles, if not just keep running and wait for him to fire again. He's really easy once you get this strategy down.
>>4449058/thread
i can only make it to the door before the last boss.
Play it with a friend
>>4450216Yes this is a good tactic. The girls are probably the hardest boss fight in this game outside of Mr. X I would say. What makes Mr. X hard is how devastating his gun is. These bosses are the hardest in the game. SOR1 is easier than SOR2 OP.
>>4451437really? i can beat SoR2 on normal but can't beat SoR on normal. maybe because i added extra lives?
>>4451434>Beat em ups are most fun with friends (otherwise they get very repetitive very fast)>I have zero friendsLife is suffering tbpqh senpaitachi
It baffles me that people genuinely need help with this shit. I'm not particularly good at these games but I've never felt the need to ask for help.

>>4449535It's called "The Humans". You can play it on Sega Genesis. It's a good game.

>>4446702Japanese people's brains don't work right; they just like certain kinds of repetition very much.
>>4448713I made it pretty far with Esuna/Tetsujin, but it was pretty grindy... So no, it's probably a bad team. You'll probably have to grind too much and you'll probably get a high level Valsu like that.
CLANG CLANG CLANG
>>4441617I always hated games doing this viewing angle. I don't want to stare at my party's asses. Final Fantasy at least got it right, putting priority on orienting your party and the enemies for maximum detail and aesthetic poses over "realistic" perspective.
>>4449280Valsu never becomes unbeatable and he's bullshit no matter what level you fight him at.
Post your local retro stores. This place near has a mild selection of retro games and hardware but more recently has been stocking xbox+ gen stuff, and the do huge business with MtG cards and other trading cards. I havent been recently but appraretly it changed hands and is now run by just one guy
>>4448821We've got Game Over Video Games scattered all over Texas in addition to a ton of smaller independent shops. There's 3 of these shops in my area alone.
It's small, but has some good shit, THEY EVEN HAVE SNATCHER ON SEGA CD. It's like $700. The got boxed consoles, and overall just good shit most of the time.
>>4448821>>4449893Funny you say that, there's a chain of stores in Southern Ontario called JC Retail that specialize in vapes and retro games. Yeah... just take that in a for a second. They also sold these shitty repros that I swear they literally bought from aliexpress for like $7 a piece, slapped a nicer label on and marked them up to $40. Absolutely awful build quality. And they said they made them their selves. They don't really sell them anymore, probably cause no one was buying them. Alot of it was just shitty rom hacks like SUPER PIKA WORLD 3, not even something like japan exclusives or unreleased games. They have other typical le nerd crap like funkos and other worthless "collectibles". There prices absolutely suck, I went to one location and they had Crash Bandicoot at $39.99 and i went to another location and they had it at $54.99!! They were both in the exact same condition btw, so there obviously seems to be no central pricing system they use or maybe its just shitty management. I would post a pic of there prices I have but its on gamecube stuff so its not retro
It's meh. Most games and accessories go for eBay prices. In the record section there is stuff I've seen online that I can tell they just bought and marked up a few bucks for s&h. There's is a selection for all your weeb/hipster/nerdy needs though like gunpla, retro and current gen games, comics, records, CDs, vhs, DVDs and assorted action figures. I hardly buy anything but it's worth a walkthrough every once in a while to see something new.
For the philly/south NJ area there is classic game junkie and bandit video.CGJ has a little something from every single game console to ever be released (exaggeration, but almost) but their prices for buying is near ebay or a little less. they do give excellent trade deals though, probably because they price everything a little higher anyways. but for the amount of stuff there its a good place to check out. but be warned, they are always fucking busy and sometimes the people working there get a little flustered and give out quick snap-like responses if juggling a few things at once but every time they did that they remembered what they said and apologized like a canadian when it was time to check out (they also have been getting robbed/fucked over alot because philly....so i can understand) so if you cant take frank speaking or getting cold shouldered if you ask a million questions you will probably get butthurt and leave a 1 star review for them like so many have done before lmao. its real fucking busy there just let me remind you one more time. BUSY. im talking 20+ people crammed into a VERY tiny shop walking around at once on a sunday.bandit video has a smaller selection but everything is very good on prices. a very large selection of dvds too. most of their SNES games were sports shit and the ones that were not were in glass cases. the guy who owns the shop was very friendly and struck up a convo as he was testing and bagging up my snes. i judged him as a cool dude.whereas a SNES console with controller and hookups at CGJ is fucking 100 dollars and comes with a year warranty and will fix anything you buy from them for free, a SNES with controller and hookups at game bandit cost me 59.99. no warranty tho.
We're never going to get a public rom of NES Sim City, are we? It's been a month and a half since it was "preserved" and not so much as a fucking screenshot or video.
>>4450454Lesser in scope than GoodTools, which also have a better naming scheme. I don't care for them not cataloging bad dumps and overdumps (though those don't even waste space with goodmerge), but ignoring translations and other major hacks is inexcusable and makes them worthless for platforms with many JRPGs. No-Intro is only good for normalfag trash. Then there's the issue that they're piggybacking on the Internet Archive's infrastructure for stuff that indubitably doesn't fall under fair use, potentially endangering their more important preservation projects if someone sees fit to pursue charges. (this also applies to tons of other questionable uploads that lie about free licenses/PD, such as music and video).
I'm sure this game has aged poorly
>>4451296
>>4451181Why would you want the bad dumps? Also, there's no reason for them to distribute the translations or hacks, since those aren't the original games. The original games are what needs to be preserved.
>>4451415>Why would you want the bad dumps?Learn to read, idiot.>Also, there's no reason for them to distribute the translations or hacks, since those aren't the original games.Or you know what, skip the learning to read part and just kill yourself.
Is it just me or is there something about 2.5D FPS games that make their graphics age well compared to other FPS games from the same time period that were 3d like Goldeneye? I'm talking about games like Doom and Daggerfall
>>4445268Agreed. I prefer full 2d like quake 1 to 2sprites in a 3d world. The sprites just look like cardboard cutouts moving towards m.e
>>4446527*looks like shit on a modern displayIt looks much better on a CRT display, since it complements the bloom.
>>4445238gimme examples
>>4447870>full 2d like quake 1dude, wat
>>4445268Quake is still pretty close to pixel graphics somehow.Sprites age well because they are distinct. Early 3d graphics are very flat etc and doesn't inspire your imagination that well.
I just got a sega genesis to get for my mom and dad and little brother for Christmas. I know a bit about the system and am going to get them Aladdin (they had it when it came out), all the Sonic games, and MK2.I know my folks will like it for the nostalgia factor, but for my little bro I want to introduce him to some older games (he's 14). Any suggestions. I'm thinking MK2 since we both like that but beyond that I'm unsure. Also, general genesis thread I guess.
>>4451256Any multiplayer?

>>4451258Streets of Rage 1 and 2 are great too, and snag a repro of the translated version of 3 if you can find it on Aliexpress or something.

Is it really a smart thing to collect boxed Sega Genesis games anymore? Why buy a boxed copy of a game for $20, when you can buy three loose games for nearly the same price?
I don't go out of my way to buy boxed Genesis games, and I don't think I would pay more just to have the box. If I see them for cheap at thrift stores sometimes I'll pick them up, and they do look nice on the shelf. But usually all I see in box are shit sports games or stuff I already have.
>>4447005Genesis had the best protective cases. Then you get the art and instructions. Sometimes the warranty card and a poster. Its not necessary to play the game, but I always liked the plastic case. If you are collecting games for an investment I think you should quit gaming.
>>4451361the instructions were always pretty cheap on Genesis games, at least the ones I got, were all in black and white, and not too many pages either.Japanese MD booklets are great though.
>>4447005Do you LIKE the box? Then get it with a box. If you don't then just get the game on its own.
