Welcome!/trv/ is a slow board, you don't need to bump more than once a day -- it's OK if your thread is not on the front page, we look several pages deep here. You can do that. too, looking for threads on your topic.Questions are welcomed, as are threads sharing experiences or generally discussing travel. For very general questions, you can get answers faster at other sites. Google is your friend. Start there, then come back here for specific questions. Some good links for basic info, and a few Pet Peeves of the board, are included within this thread.

My hometown is Toyama city in Jap. It's the most beautiful city in Jap.
>>1337119Hoping to move there next year
Lafayette, Colorado. Just outside of Boulder, it used to be where all the service workers for hippieville lived, but now it is being taken over by said trustfund hippies. FML, everything is twice as expensive as when I moved here.
a fucking swamp in New Jersey right across the bay from New Yorkhurricane sandy best day of my lifeJust a piece of advice, if you never step foot in New Jersey, you're probably helping yourself more than you could ever imagine.
>>1338221actually, I spent my childhood in Rego Park, so that's sort of my hometown and where all my memories "growing up" were.this is a pretty accurate shot, giant malls, giant highways, and ugly buildingsThank fuck I don't live on the east coast any longer. Now I just need to get out of this country in general, heh (thank you EU passport)
I also living in Toyama shit.
Anyone else find the infamous city of Norilsk kind of weirdly comfy? Something about the bleak, desolate and cold industrial environment is comfy and very atmospheric. Maybe I'm just fucking weird though.
it's 100k people in a very compact city, I'm sure there's something going on there all the time
>>1338125Do you speak Russian?
>>1338146only very basic stuff
>>1338237How accessible was it wandering around these non-touristy places without much of a grasp on the language?
>>1338248pretty good, when necessary i used google translate so the language barrier wasn't much of a problemthough, it would have been better if i spoke fluent russian, as lots of locals actually wanted to talk to me (i sometimes spent hours talking to someone via google translate)
- for all fellow traveller out there that might wanted to know more about my country- please note that it's a very big country with various kind of nature and human, so some questions might get answered by biased or commonsense- for any indobro out there feel free to contribute-lets have general discussion about this big country but you probably never heard of-also sorry for any bad english
>>1338214Thanks for making this thread. I will be travelling at end of December. Whats the situation with Bali volcano? Is it safe to travel to Jakarta? And is there threat of tsunami during new year.
>>1338214Will travel Indonesia in January for three weeks. Arrival and departure is in Jakarta, I think I will spend most of the time on Java and Bali.Would you like to give me some advice, how to behave on Java (besides being friendly, obviously)? Any topics to avoid when talking with locals?
I am kind of an Indonesia boo from my 5 day trip to Jakarta. I want to go again at some point for the 30 days of the visa and try to study the language.
I decided to get off my ass and am buying a ticket to Ukraine, Romania or Colombia on christmas or new years (cheap flights). I am playing with the idea of retiring in one of these two countries. I speak a bit of spanish, but I am aware Colombia is very fucking dangerous as a gringo.Ukraine is also known to be very dangerous, but the women are my favorite! I don't speak any russian or Ukranian, and have never been east of greece, but I love pedestrian style cities, and cold weather.Romania was another option, the women are beautiful, the language is impossible to learn, and useless, but it is cheap, decent food, and in the EU (makes me feels safer and more confident). My goal is too meet women who have plastic surgery and propose to them. Romania is $760Kiev is $650 Colombia is about $500Which of three countries would you rather go and live for 1 month to 5 years in, marry a girl from, and feel safest/welcomed in?Considering early retirement with a wife that likes plastic surgery to make herself look more beautiful!
I wonder what happened to that Israeli guy who made a bunch of threads/posts about going to Ukraine to marry a pure Slavic maiden?Anyway, the whores will be back on vacation from their central European FKK brothels around xmas / new year, so I suppose that's a good a time to meet the ambitious ones. You should also know that Even Ukraine now qualifies for pretty liberal EU visa treatment, so you're wedding ring will be worth much less than 10 years ago. Remember too that Ukraine celebrates both western and eastern xmas, and Romania celebrates on 25 Dec even though it's Orthodox. Finally, check out the In Your Pocket guides to the different cities. Ukraine isn't dangerous at all unless you go to the occupied/disputed areas in the south/east,
>>1337645Searxh for naturam women and fuck them post results and pics
>>1337913Hahaha the average Ukraine guy is also dirt poor, women don’t care about looks just ask /fit/
>>1337942I'm Dutch CanadianIf you actually travel to Ukraine or Russia you will see that the average guy in his 20s doesn't look the same as the fat 60 year old Russian tourist or balding NEET playing Dota his basement you saw in some pic on the internet>>1338223Ukraine has poor salaries but the standard of living isn't bad. It's not Africa or the Phillipines. If a girl is going to give up her life, friends, family, for some ugly loser he is going to have to be rich as fuck in his own country, not just rich by Ukranian standards/fit/ are complete losers, being in good shape is a nice bonus if you're already attractive but girls won't sleep with an ugly, balding loser dressed like a bum just because he had a 6 pack. Especially in a cold country like Ukraine where it's next to impossible to show off your body
>>1337949>I wonder what happened to that Israeli guy who made a bunch of threads/posts about going to Ukraine to marry a pure Slavic maiden?Since I'm originally Hungarian and I speak the language, I decided that finding a good looking Hungarian woman will be easier than learning the Ukrainian language, so I moved to Budapest.
Hey /trv/So I have nowhere to go for Christmas / New Years. I don't want to stay in my flat because I hate it there, but I also don't have a specific city / country I want to travel to.I'm thinking therefore of simply travelling from London to France by train and then simply travelling aimlessly on trains and busses for around 7 days before heading home. Has anyone done this before?Alternatively, could you guys recommend a safe hostel to stay at in Paris please?
>>1338260You'll get mugged/robbed in Paris if you do that.

>>1338261Don't know about the center but last week I really stayed in an apartment for less than $20 near Minowa station (two stops from Ueno).
>>1338261Apartments? You mean a room
are there any arcades in tokyo that have a decent lightgun game selection? ive been to a few in akiba/ikebukuro and usually there is only only 2 or 3 total in each building
>>1338236No i did not but we decided for sure we want to go on April. I'm assuming that's a bad idea and I should go into the city
>>1338276yes. Narita is around 2 hours or so away by train from Tokyo. You can spend your first or last night there to be closer to the airport but for the rest you should really be closer to the city
What's up with the teaching english in ____ country meme? How legit is it? Like you just get that TEFL certification and go over there looking for work? How do you even get paid if you don't have the work visa? Any recommendations?
>>1338132Who the fuck doesn't like brunch?
Can I still teach English in Japan even if I'm Mexican
>>1338197Whites are generally the most prosperous race, further backed by the massive amounts of foreign media created by USA and europe. It's no secret why we're the preferred hire.
>>1338184>>1338245the image isn't talking about brunch at home or at a shitty buffet. Brunch in this context is when a bunch of university girls, hungover from the previous night's antics, head out to a fancy establishment where they pay $20 for two waffles and a fruit salad.
>>1338132I bet the person who made that image has never even left their country, or went on a shitty holiday with their parents as a teenager.
>be black>want to travel>~85% of the world will look at you with distrust>no 3rd worlder will want to hang out with you because you aren't a white gringo>Yurope East of Germany is a no go zone>Asians don't like blacks>Africa...lol>Would get shot in Americah-hold me /trv/
>>1337015This is not true. The black Americans that act the way you describe are all either not affluent enough to travel, or have no interest in it
>Asians don't like blacksActually, you'd be surprised.>live in Canada>one of my customers is a black man with a Japanese wife>not a Chinese/Thai/Filipino wife (ie. low-hanging fruit), but a Japanese wife>this marriage was already highly improbable, but by god, it happened>wife hardly speaks any English>husband has to translate for her>he only speaks Japanese to her>he has three children>they all have Japanese names>they also speak JapaneseHow the fuck does a black man get cucked this much in life? You might be able to get a Japanese wife of your own if you bend over backwards that much.
Wouldn't blacks technically have an advantage in traveling? I mean think about it.>better resistance to sunburns>better thermal absorption>improved visibility in snowy conditions
>>1338172>black>speaks japThat's more troublesome than having a Jap wife.
>>1338172A lot of black military, and prior military, guys have Japanese wives. Just from exposure of being around them. Blacks and Asians aren't typically attracted to each other in their natural habitats. But when exposed to each they hook up
[healing moves]I tried to make a movie on air travel! !It is a scenic walking scenery at SKY AIRBUS of Haneda Airport ⇨ Fukuoka Airport .Fuji is fantastically depicted today. You can also recognize Enoshima clearly. Please be healed by all means! !https://youtu.be/Hrtp4E3Hki8
am i making a mistake going to mexico city as my first trip to mexico? the plan is to go there for a week and rent airbnb, eat tacos, and get tan should i reconsider going to another city in mexico?
>>1337817Cobdomless sex with whores its best sex and cum inside mouth, vagina and anus
>>1325246>>1325118Acapuclo was my favorite place I visited in Mexico. It used to be very touristy but now it's mostly just mexican tourists as most countries list Guerrero as a state you shouldn't visit because of gang violence, but it's mostly just mexicans killing mexicans. I didn't see a single gringo the three weeks I was there. I paid about $10 a night to stay in a hotel in Las Playas that I found on airbnb. Amazing weather, beautiful ocean, good nightlife, even a few gay bars, friendly locals, very cheap in general. Maybe I'll retire there since I'll never be able to afford property in my first world capitalist shit hole country
>>1327021Getting cell service in Mexico was so painful for me. I decided to go with ATT and they are so fucking incompetent. I was waiting at the store for about an hour because my data plan stopped working after I used 100mb and I looked at the reps screen and they were just on a livechat on the ATT website.. WTF. They also needed all this documentation and shit. it was way more complicated than it should have been
>>1328356create a profile on grindr and say you're looking for weed. worked for me, I got a $500 peso ounce from a nice gentleman. people on the street in playa/cancun will often try charge gringos that amount for a gram.
>>1337817Nah no eres hombre
So I've accepted a job in Taichung, Taiwan and I've been reading up on the location. Apparently Taiwan is like Florida (where I live now) in terms of weather, so I'm not too sure what to pack. Should I bring some cold weather clothes as well? I don't want to be underprepared and look like a loon walking around in shorts while it's frosty outside.
>>1335853Taichung itself is is kind of boring. It's a nice city and all, but there isn't a ton of stuff to do. There are temples everywhere and I found they got kind of boring after a while, but Fo Guang Shan is pretty damn impressive mainly for the size. There's also a pretty big Buddha in Changhua which is like 15 minutes from Taichung, and there's a bit of a temple complex around it. You'll see tons of temples walking around though and most of them got pretty boring to me after a while. There's also a place called the Gaomei wetlands near Taichung, and I thought that was pretty cool, but it's probably a better thing to do in spring/summer when the water won't be frigid.Besides that, if you like mountains I'd recommend Alishan, and I hear Taroko Gorge is cool too though I've actually never been. There's also Yangmingshan just outside Taipei and there's a lot of pretty cool areas around there. Honestly over the whole island there's tons of stuff to do, just depends where you are. You can find flyers and stuff in train stations for the city you're in, and while some of them will just advertise shitty attractions, you might find something cool worth doing.
>>1335850Oh god. Taiching is a pretty boring city. Should have gone with Taipei if you had the chance.
I was in Hsin chu, fucking spelling, for a while. Stand pat on your clothes, no different from what you'd have in the moist part of florida. Remember how close you are to all the chinks shitting out clothing.Range for me was about 60 degrees to a fucking jungle swamp. I'd expect it to be a touch cooler there at the low end, with the high end still being fucking jungle swamp.
not OP, but I am interested in learning traditional Chinese. Any good recommendations for textbooks? I know how to speak, but I can't read very good.
>>1335850Hopefully you're not a large person, so you can find some clothes to buy there depending on how you cope with the weather.>>1335852Seconded. The mountains are really refreshing in the summer; still 100% humidity, but you don't have to take 3 showers a day in order to not feel disgusting. I really liked the mountains there, just be careful of getting eaten alive by mosquitoes (anywhere in TW). Make sure you have something for bug bites.>>1335853I've taken a train from middle Taiwan to the southern tip of Taiwan and it took like 3 hours iirc. You can pretty much explore anywhere. Personally, I liked Danshui, pretty nature-y.I'm not sure if they do night markets during winter, but you can try looking around. Those are always interesting experiences.
Help, /trv/.My dad offered me a trip to France to see the Normandy beaches, Paris, and the unmarked grave where my great grandfather's (and presumably his as well) are buried after being shot down in WWII.I don't know if I should take it or if I want to go. On the one hand, it would be cool, I suppose. But I don't know anything about the history of the place, which would be the only part I'd be interested in. I hate traveling and there's nothing there I couldn't read in a book. What should I do? Am I overthinking it? Should I go for it?
>>1338234err, what? Paris was crap 10 years ago. Can't even imagine it today. I was in London 5 years ago and pretty much could have been told it was Karachi and I wouldn't have argued. I've been all over the world, going to Paris isn't much too fucking lie about LOLI drove from Amsterdam to Brussels to Bruges to Paris then back up to Calais and over to Dover. Was a fun trip, but it cost a fortune. I regret going so far out of the way from Bruges down to Paris and then back up to Calais. Thing is, I didn't go in the Louvre, so I kinda still have to go back.
>>1338250Quebec City is my favorite francophone city, but I haven't been to the south of France. actually, Martinique is great, too.
>>1338252I'd love to go to Reunion one day
>>1338250Paris and London have been shitholes long before you were born. They are no different now than 5 or 10 or 20 years ago.
>>1338258err, there are a hell of a lot more africans there now. that's a huge difference.
Has anyone ever done 'dark tourism?' What's the most undesirable place you've been?
>>1337155Yeah in retrospect it's not as bad as the others listed, but I hate the Alta Plano in general, and being in a dirty city up there is just bleakness squared. El Alto also sucks for this reason, as does Oruru. I actually like the dirty third world when the weather is nice (as it usually is); when it's also cold it's pure misery.
>>1337178Fuck, I found the Altiplano amazing, I will definitely go back
>>1335724Well the most undesirable place for me was Tibet. Before I travelled there it was like holy shit it must be awesome, but it turned out as a light version of north korea for me.
>>1335724Haven't been to many places and I have only felt unsafe once, walkig home from watching the cinema late at night in Harlem
I've been to the Downtown Eastside in Vancouver...? Who hasn't walked the wrong block and ended up there, though. I've been to Orlando... which is seedy as fuck anywhere outside the resort complexes. Same with the Dominican Republic... that was scary. err, Calais was bad. Middlesbrough seemed rough but I had fun. Teesside is charming in a dystopian way. Gary, Indiana is scary... HUNTINGTON West Virginia was fucking terrifying too. I saw maybe a dozen people shooting up in trap houses and abandoned shops over the course of 10 minutes. Atlantic City's boardwalk is sketchy, too.Yeah, so nothing really extreme at all. Some anons in this thread really fucking push it if you ask me. But I'm a blue eyed faggot, so I don't press my luck. I wouldn't even go back to London, it was so seedy.
Going to Singapore over the New Year, what are essential locales, bars and overnight hotels. I was thinking of drinking my ass off in Clarke Quay and staying in the MET A Space Pod capsule hotel overnight. Any experiences are appreciated.
Orchard Roadthose gardens and the marina areatravelling to Sentosa is good, i love to see the brits coastal guns thereas for hotel i'd say that anything below JW Marriott is trash
is singapore worth it? was going to book a flight since the flitht tickets are on sale but everythings expensive there? also, is there anything to see there? like any hip places and art galleries and things like that?
>>1338199Singapore is the place you want to go if you want to see a safe, clean asian islandThere are yuppie and artsy culture here, might be worth a while to explore around
>>1338199>but everythings expensive there? No. Food especially is one of the main draws for me, and it's cheap as fuck. Don't go to generic overpriced restaurants in the city. Hawker Centers are the shit, and you can get a full meal for $5 and under most of the time. The island is so small it's almost impossible to get lost. I usually just sit on a double decker bus for hours. Getting off to eat at different places.
>>1338199Yes there are a few art galleries and landmarks.
