Welcome to /diy/, a place to:

Post and discuss /diy/ projects, ask questions regarding /diy/ topics and exchange ideas and techniques.

Please keep in mind:
- This is a SFW board. No fleshlights or other sex toys.
- No weapons. That goes to /k/ - Weapons. The workmanship and techniques involved in creating objects which could be used as weapons or the portion of a weapons project that involves them (e.g., forging steel for a blade, machining for gunsmithing, what epoxy can I use to fix my bow) may be discussed in /diy/, but discussing weapon-specific techniques/designs or the actual use of weapons is disallowed. Things such as fixed blade knives or axes are considered tools, things such as swords, guns or explosives are considered weapons.
- No drugs or drug paraphernalia (See Global Rule 1). If you want to discuss something that could involve such things (e.g., carving a tobacco pipe from wood) that's fine, but make sure it's /diy/ related and doesn't involve drugs or it will result in deletion/ban.

Some friendly suggestions for posting:
- First ask Google, then ask /diy/. Your question will probably be better received if you do so.
- List available resources (tools, materials, budget, time, etc.)
- Try to use pictures and explain the goal, if possible
- Be patient, this is a slow board; your thread will be around for days.
- Share your results! /diy/ loves to see problems solved and projects completed!

After years of neglect I'm trying to restore my prusa i3, but I'm finding a wall here.

When I connect the RAMPS everything seems fine, I recieve data temperature and I don't find any error messages but no matter what I try to motors don't move, I have already tried changing the pololus and trying only one motor but to no avail, so how can I check if I have managed to kill 5 NEMTA 17 motors or to be totally sure if the motors aren't really the problem?

Went to Lowes to look at wood for a project I'm doing. (taking old BSR record players and replacing the crumbling particle board or cracked plastic with butcher block).

>be me, enter the high security tool section with beeping cameras.
>head on over to the saws and planes.
>checking out a no name mini plane- $9.99
>Lowes clerk approaches.
>greets me with "welcome to Lowes"
>holding the plane in my hand, I ask if they have Lie-Nielson block planes
>Lowes clerk responds: "Sorry, no movies here."
>don't know what he was talking about. It may have been a language barrier since he was apparently from Africa or something, heavy accent.
>"I'm looking for a Block Plane by Lie-Nielson", I ask again.
>He responds, "Sir, no movies here" angrily and walks away.

I don't know what he was talking about. What kind of training do they provide? Additionally, I was looking at their wood working project magazines, and every single magazine had high end block planes and dove tail saws and levels, and chisels. None of the featured tools in the magazine in the tool section of Lowes is carried by Lowes.

The wood has warped and the joints won't fit anymore. Is there a way I can make them fit without cutting in slits and changing the shape of them? I've tried hot water but then it starts to curve. Maybe just use steam? I'm not sure.

This is the power of global communication.

Some university had a course that people could attend to through the Internet. In the exam the first student from the school itself was on the 400th place. This means that for each smart student there is at least 400 smarter students "somewhere".
Unfortunately there is an even larger amount of idiots lurking around...

Steam boxes are really handy for anything that requires bending wood. Soaking will not cut it... you really need to do both soak and steam, but steaming is more important.

I built a steam box from scrap lumber and an old pressure cooker fired off a BBQ burner. Threw lengths of wood in pond overnight, then steamed for an hour. They were ridiculously flexible when removed... curved them around the project (a boat) and clamped them in place overnight. Next day there was some minor springback; glued and reclamped in place, good to go.

Suggest you build a steam box yourself. I'd skip the soaking on wood that old. Remove from steam box and clamp flat (or whatever.) When you remove it I'm betting it's 100% fixed.

There are several good books and YouTube channels that are commonly recommended for beginners and those wanting to learn more, many with advanced techniques. The best way to get involved in electronics is just to make stuff. Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty.

>What books are there?

Getting Started in Electronics Forrest Mims III
Make: Electronics Charles Platt
How to Diagnose & Fix Everything Electronic Michael Jay Greier

Hi, I'm the guy from the other thread. Aconditioning the signal coming from the IR photodiode is a harder than just connecting the output of a demodulating sensor to an oscillator. I've tried it before and the photodiode's reception is very weak when used on a voltage divider, so that means using one or two amplifiers, filters, comparator...
>>
>>1299422
If the photodiode works more as a current source you should be able to just pass it through an NPN or two, with appropriate resistor to keep it in the linear region and give a worthwhile output signal.

But if they are much more like a photovoltaic panel, I can see why this would be a problem since the mV won't activate the transistor much at all, but unless the AGC+filters+demodulator all come in a nice and easy to use package, I don't think a dual op-amp chip would be inefficient space-wise, since it can handle amplification and the cutoff voltage.

they do. and they're free coz you pull them from kinds of dead gadgets that use a remote (stereos, DVD players, cable boxes, VCRs, etc). i pulled this one yesterday. 3 pins: ground, 5V, digital signal out.

>just putting a resistor in there
Do you have any practical experience in the field? How do you deal with the optical noise generated by a CFL screen background and fluorescent lamps running on electronic ballasts? Suppression of such signals is part of the AGC/demodulator circuitry. A naïve 'why don't you simply' approach can quickly accrete a substantial BoM without solving real world problems.

Seeing as this is the Atari punk edition I have a couple of ohm music related circuit questions.

I have built a couple of sequencers, a pulse generator and a multi vca’s from kits. The two sequencers seem to be acting a little bit differently to each other, one channel on the vca isn’t working at all and one of the 7 pulses isn’t working.
I’m a totally new to the electronics side of this and would like to understand how to trouble shoot these circuits. I think I could probably work out a basic schematic by now to understand which components are where, but I really struggle with it once it’s on the pcb.
The pulses module seems to be the simplest module so I’ll start with that. It has 7 pulses coming from a 4081IC followed by a couple of resistors a led and a 3.5mm output socket. Some of the outputs are AND I believe so maybe not coming directly from the IC?
I have a basic digital voltmeter and an old oscilloscope and although I’ve used them both briefly I have no idea how to use either to test a circuit.
Please help!

I think (pic related) is the schematic for the pulses module?
Pulses info is on this page here:

I used freezer paper. It’s semitransparent and has plastic coating on one side. Google search template you want and blow up to size. Put down template, put freezer paper on top with plastic side down. I directly cut the freezer paper with an exacto knife... you can also trace first.
When done, iron on the freezer paper to T-shirt. Use 50/50 bleach and water. Wet down with spray bottle and immediately towel off excess with paper towel. It will expose over a few minutes; dunk in cold water to stop the reaction, then wash normally. There are tons of tutorials... but it’s not complicated. Watch out with bleach.. wear old clothes and do outside or in garage.
>>1297113
It’s easy. Grab an old dark shirt and some freezer paper and try it out. Aside from above you can also use gel from bleach sticks or stamps.

it's a luxury apartment.

that one bedroom on the right is for the "help". which is why it is next to the kitchen and laundry.

the bit of hall for the 2 bedrooms on the left is to reduce noise and light from the living space.

half bath in the living room for guests. the master suite has a bath and a huge walk in closet/dressing area. since there is only one other bedroom that isn't for "the help", it gets its own bathroom and a smaller closet/dressing area.

i have a friend that has a condo in a building from the 1930s. she owns like half the floor and her condo was originally 3 large luxury apartments. they all have some of the quirks that fraiser's apartment does.
