Why were sprite comics such a popular thing in the late 90s/early 2000s? These seem like a phenom totally exclusive to one generation of people. I wonder how they would have been different in the internet as it currently exists.

I never played the games, but I really like Sir Dan's design
>>4449857>>4449887The second game is much better.
the biggest con for this game is the camera control. one of the biggest reasons I stopped playing it.
>>4450020>>4450014Fair enough, but there were plenty of titles that had adequate VO on the same console.Crash BandicootSpyroMegaman Legends (if just for Teisel alone)MGSThose are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Maybe those titles had bigger budgets, I don't know, but I'd rather just have scrolling text than Voice Actors stumbling over their lines.
so I'm sure there has already been threads about this game. I have played it and completed it several times. To me, this game is one of my favorite RPG'S as a kid. Though I would like to hear /vr/'s thoughts about it. your pros/cons about the game. To be honest. I don't mind if anyone here has negative or positive opinions about it let's just discuss about this game. What was you're thing you liked or disliked about the game? Considering there a 3D Remake in the works. I don't see many threads about SOM. Do you think the remake will hold up well to the original since there is now "voice acting"?
My first ever RPG, so it's hard to be objective about it. No game since has matched the sense of wonder. Except perhaps the sequel Seiken Densetsu 3. It's a rare treat when a sequel to an amazing game is arguably even better.Back to SoM - I always felt the action combat really put me into the game in a way that turn based could never match. The story might be cliche by todays standards, but when I first played it I was comparing it to game stories like Super Mario World, so it was an epic adventure.Environments and their variety were great.Soundtrack is up there with the all time best.
>>4449921I agree with you about the AI getting stuck and also getting killed constantly. One of the things that annoyed me was that, and the combat is hard to learn at first but trust me, sounds to me you need to grind more and practice the combat and try to be patient. I agree with you about the music and graphics, and also the story on how its kind of mediocre. But you gotta admit that this game really is a master piece! You just gotta keep playing with the game and learn.
I played through some kind of "hard mode" hacked version of this recently. It was brutally hard, and mostly not in an especially interesting way, but I eventually finished it. You have to exploit some of the quirks of the engine to get through, like how casting a spell can mysteriously neutralize an attack that's being applied to the caster. And you have to grind some.
>Final Fantasy Adventure: basically the same format the Ys games would use, freedom of movement and combat based around dodging bosses' attacks>Secret of Mana: keeps the freedom of movement, but magic is now unblockable--combat is now devolved to waiting for 100% charge and spamming candies/spells>Seiken Densetsu 3: freedom of movement gone, now everyone just shuffles around, even more unblockable spells and even the weapon techs are just cutscenes with damage>Legend of Mana: same shuffling mechanic as SD3, you can't even leave the screen without killing all enemies now, enemies "appear" like random encounters instead of existing on the map like in the other games, you can loop any enemy into an infinite basic attack combo, even bossesHow can one franchise go so horribly wrong?
>>4450537What about the GBA remake?

>>4449796I'm saying that Sega was really, really clever. There is only one soundtrack. The difference is how it is articulated. The whole thing could be layered and stringed together for the 'complete' Sonic CD OSV. I have no doubt at this point it was intentional.
>>4449796re: "I don't know music stuff" (I was going to post this in /mu/ at some point) TL;DR is that most of the pieces can be configured to fit flawlessly, the US and JP version. Some are straight up mixdowns (as in, track over another track) and some are akin to a second part of an existing song.I was told the US composer originally wanted the ability to switch back and forth between the OG OSV and his. This would substantiate it because then two friends with a copy could play them at the same time in the 90's. Unfortunately, he didn't get to.Again, I would wager there *never have been two soundtracks*. From the perspective of a musician, audio engineer and producer, it sound as though they were split, or at least one was made with the intention that the other would be made.
>>4449714They're the same. The reason they are is because SoA couldn't request further revisions of the game or different samples, as the past tracks are part of the game's data and not simple swappable red book tracks.
>>4450034The US soundtrack was always a last-minute decision, and the reason why US was the last country to get Sonic CD. There are two soundtracks, period. The Japanese one is the intended music, while the American served the two-fold purpose of testing out Sega's multimedia studio and SoA forcing "their" version of Sonic whenever possible.
>>4450024>>4450034I think I get it. They basically just enabled/disabled layer tracks from the same songs?also post more yt doubles
Hey bros, 18yo here. Completely missed out on the NES and SNES catalogue of gaming while growing up besides Super Mario Bros, Zelda 1 and 2, SMW, and DKC. Real talk, I've loved BT for ages but I've never really appreciated the gameplay in 1. It feels way too slow paced to walk around, even with Talon Trot. It's simple in the number of things to find and not over complicated, but say I fall down a tree, it'll take me forever to get back up there! Mario I could zeep-bop-badoo-bop bing bong jump. Anywhere I wanted to be I can be there in a matter of minutes, as long as I knew it was there. Tooie fixed that because more of its levels scaled vertically, and I could just jump downhill wherever the point I wanted to get back to. It felt like I was still being punished, but recovering wasn't as bad.Granted, Tooie had a deal of backtracking that was somewhat minimized by the crossing levels, you have to backtrack at least once in Kazooie but no more.
>>4451874Mingy Jongo is boring, the presentation was amazing but as a boss he was eh.. HAG-1 wasn't as memorable as Grunty in B-K
>>4451878I completely disagree with the HAG 1. Every bit as memorable.
>>4451856You're encouraged to explore but really all there is to find are some objects on a check list. In a Zelda game or an RPG when you explore you find interesting things. The stuff you find in the Kazooie games are basically glorified keys except rather than finding one key you need to collect 10-20 to open a single door.None of the objectals to the trinekts: the platforming, the enemies, or the puzzles are exactly well done or challenging.Collecthatons by their very nature suck but given how weak controls were for early 3D and how little they could actually have on the screen at once it was a much needed crutch. They were enjoyable for two reasons1) They had nice environments and art styles. That's really what made running around in the world fun. The level design, combat, and reward for exploring all sucked. But at least it looked like a great cartoon world.2) Even though the mechanics are boring and shallow they at least throw a ton of shit at you so you wouldn't focus on one thing too long (Banjo gave you a big pile of different moves and mini-games. Mario 64 gave you as many different jumps as they could think of)The art direction was actually more important than the mechanics. That's what people remember. They remember Grunty the ryming witch, not the particular bend to the land scape where they collected the 76th music note. They remembered being able to turn into weird objects and items....not that there was any depth to the abilities it gave you...and the more weird objects the better (hence tooie is the better game because the art was better and you simply had more weird transformation and abilities. You arn't playing these games for their mechanical depth....)
>>4451921>None of the objectals to the trinekts: the platforming, the enemies, or the puzzles are exactly well done or challenging.I agree they arent challenging>You arn't playing these games for their mechanical depth....That's my point actually.
I noticed in Banjo Kazooie if in dirty water and you swim enough the edges of kazooies feathers get covered in dirt meanwhile in cold water her feathers have a thin coat of snow in the edges.
Do you think quake 2 gets unfairly treated? It doesn't get talked about as much as the other quake games and if it does, its more critical than compared to the other quake games.
Doesn't quake 2 have the worst physics of all the quake games? Especially with air control for strafe jumping and bunny hopping?
>>4451773What makes you say that? Quake 3 is just Quake 2 with everything but strafe jumping stripped out. With QL they brought back a simplified form of double jumping but still no slope jumping or ladder jumping as well as some other tricks.
>>4451784what do you mean everything but strafe jumping stripped out? it's on the one hand 99% similar but very different at the precise tactical level. they play very differently despite how similar they are, so i'm not sure what basis there is for saying it's a clone minus (one thing). and what do you mean by double jumping? and slope and ladder jumping for that matter? are you referring to CPMA physics?Q3 in most instances plays faster than Q2 which is fast but clunky by comparison. QL is a whole different matter but it plays like a punchier Q3. but the pace of each quake game has progressively increased, however marginally; for all their intrinsic similarities they play very differently. the weapons are a big part but so are a lot of minute changes in in-air turns, momentum, speed, and tactics.
>>4451830QL is NOT a punchier Q3. Most weapons in QL do less damage such as the rocket launcher (splash), lightning gun, railgun, and shotgun. All of those movement mechanics listed are in Q2, with some of them being reimplemented in CPMA since its main goal is to combine the movement and gameplay mechanics of all three games. Q2 is a very acrobatic game with double jumping playing a huge role on every map. The scaling of maps in Quake 1 and 2 is also much smaller than Quake 3 which dictates the pace of the game. Even a slow map like Q2DM1 compared to Q3DM13 will generally have a higher frag count. Also the pace of each game increasing as they go on is false. The time to kill has increased with every game. We went from the 300DPS LG in Quake 1 to the one hit kill off spawn railgun to untiered armor so stacking yellows instead of contesting for reds can put you even with an opponent and you start off with 125HP. Whether this is good or not is personal preference. You will find that lethality in weapons decreased over time when looking at their stats.
>>4451853i grant the points you make; i think i had a different meaning of "punchier," which did not necessarily mean better. i mostly played CA in QL but also some FFA and TDM and they all shared the same look. it was more easily customizable than Q3 without looking up commands (again, not that this is necessarily a fault), and it just "felt" imperceptibly different, beyond the changes and additions they made to weapons and pickups. i know that's subjective but that's all i'm commenting on.Q2 definitely was fast and had skilled movements absent in Q3. but jump-pads replacing ladders overall made for quicker navigation. (this is also a personal preference.) there were more than a few subpar Q3DM maps, but i was speaking more to the engine, gameplay and tactics rather than the map design.i do prefer Q3 to QL for the record although it's refreshing to have a different option

What does /vr/ think of the older Elder Scrolls games? Everyone always jerks off to Morrowind, but honestly I enjoyed Daggerfall way more. Even Redguard and Battlespire were fun, but most people claim anything before Morrowind is "too old". Can we get some retro Elder Scrolls love or what
>>4450590Battlespire's kinda shit, man. I was all hyped up when I finally found a download of it (After gog.com got it) but I found a game with boring combat, buggy movement, and some of the worst inventory management I've found. There were like seven diferent items using the same graphic, one of them an item that was dropped by fucking EVERYTHING and the others all plot-relevant items that you could lose or not pick up by mistake.
>>4450548>/v/ poster detectedWe have DaggerFall threads every other week anon. Lurk More.
>>4451143There is actually a lot that I like about Arena. I prefer that enemies give XP instead of the level by action of later games. Arena also has functioning racial bonuses, so even though High Elves are still the master race, you at least have an excuse to play something else. A lot of little things add up to make for a different experience, although I understand why it's not as popular.
