I play the piano and I'm pretty good at it. I want to use it as a sort of social proof and as a way to connect with people (and, yes, impress girls--not even going to try to deny it). How do I do so without being pretentious about it? It seems like most people don't really like "that guy who plays an instrument at parties", and most homes don't even have pianos anymore anyways. Basically I want to be able to use it as a way to put my best foot forward, but do so in a graceful and un-annoying way. For what it's worth I also play guitar fairly well but "that guy who carries a guitar around" is even worse, and I prefer piano.

Cali fag hereI don't have first hand knowledge of Humboldt, but by reputation and conversation with alumni there, it's evidently some liberal/hippie Mecca there. They say it's a very comfy campus where everyone smokes pot, knows each other. Basically you'll probably be sitting around a camp fire and literallly singing kumbaya. The HUGE negative about Humboldt is that it's in the middle of no where. It's like 3 hours away from any major city, so if you're a city fag that likes to go to clubs, then then that's going to be a lot harder on you. It's a rural campus, make no mistake. Did you try applying to San Francisco and San Jose State? I'm sure, for obvious reasons, those areas would be more up your alley.

And obviously San Diego is a fun urban beach city. So only you can answer what your priorities are. Humboldt is probably one of the comfiest campuses in the nation (literally next to redwoods). I've had friends and teachers tell us how zen and beautiful it is to go hiking there. But again, nothing happens in Humboldt and you're 3+ hours away from cities. If you want a small private liberal arts feeling, then go for it. It was definitely on my own shortlist but I pussied out because I'm a city dweller through and through. So anyway, if you want a city/urban campus, then you're going to want to sit out the spring term. Also, the application period for the Cal States ended Nov. 30. You had to have applied one year in advance. If you didn't apply for options for the fall, then you already closed that door on yourself -- unless you're willing to sit out a whole extra year.
