In a sense, it blocks you from resonating with demons even if you ordinarily would, like a firewall that prevents your outgoing signals from reaching them and their outgoing signals from reaching you. Why demons pretend to be friendly at first is to a) show you how to release your shield and b) make you believe that it's the best course of action. Once you do you're fucked.
