Maarja Krusten

I am a historian and a former federal archivist who worked for the Nixon Presidential Materials Project of the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) from 1976 to 1990.
During the summer of 1973, shortly after I received a bachelor’s degree in history, I worked in the office of Sen. Howard H. Baker, Jr. (R – TN). Sen. Baker then was vice chair of the Senate Select Committee on Presidential Campaign activities, which investigated Watergate and other actions by the Nixon White House.
After I returned to grad school to continue my history studies, I took a job with the National Archives in 1976. During my career at NARA, I primarily worked with the Nixon White House tapes, first describing their contents, then screening them to determine what could be disclosed to the public and what required restriction under 36 CFR 1275. I also did similar disclosure review with some of the textual files from the Nixon White House.

After 1990, I worked as a Federal historian with some archival and records related duties. In the spring of 2011, Archivist of the United States (AOTUS) David S. Ferriero reached out and enabled me to reconnect with my former employer, NARA, in a meaningful way.
I enjoy professional and social contacts with a wide network of other friends of various ranks among David’s team at NARA. In the fall of 2011, I joined the Foundation for the National Archives. This enables me to support the National Archives’ public outreach efforts.

I am not affiliated with any political party and have considered myself an Independent since 1990. My blogging has expanded since I started The Changing Archives Sky, originally named Nixonara (2010-2015). You can find an overview of topics and why I write about some of them at “About the blog.”
