Now that I've been mostly using my fat bike, a seldom used stretch of train tracks makes a nice shortcut north. There is about a foot of flat gravel to the edge of the ties which is fast to ride on once a little snow gets packed onto it. Yesterday I followed it out of the city to an under construction freeway. They had a haul road built across the tracks with berms to each side so there won't be any trains on that stretch for a while. I haven't seen a train on it in years and the tracks are completely buried where they cross a couple gravel roads. But they had to spend millions building 2 bridges just in case someone wants to run a train down there some day.
