People act like the library of Alexander was where all human knowledge was stored and that through its destruction everybody had to reset. Bullshit. It was a place of learning and knowledge, sure, but it was hardly a unique institution. The only reason retards believe this library of Alexandria nonsense is from a cracked article back in 2007 that said we'd be exploring the stars had it not been for the library's destruction. Complete ahistorical nonsense.

>Library of Alexandria

that place has been burned down more times than your mom, anyone who conquered alexandria burned it at some point, some more than once, it burned during riots or caught fire during fighting or it got burned down just by decree, and thats not counting the occasions it just went up by accident(which isnt suprising considering it was a massive papirus pire lit by oil lamps, whats suprising is that the city authorities didnt just tear the whole place down as a proven firehazard)

some people seem to think romans were some shining example of progressive rattional proto-scientism of some sort, they routinely burned whole works and whole libraries, other than the usual suspects like philosophers and poets they especially had a thing against alchemical and botanical work, but anything could get a work condemned and the author sent to the salt mines, the empire had its own lists of banned books and authors long before christians got arround to ban anything let alone burn it

Hey guys. /pol/ insists that academia is full of Marxists but I never encountered that in my history department. The only Marxist history texts I've read were written in the 70s.

I'm pretty interested in Marxist analysis, especially when applied to historical research. Who are the prominent Marxist historians or political scientists writing these days? Have any major peer reviewed Marxist texts been published in the past 10 years?

Since you all know them, why don't you namedrop some? I'm just as interested as OP here. All I know are some post-structuralist Neo-Marxist philosophers, not historians or political scientists.

Not sure if this is the correct board but is it plausable for either a Scot to have served at the Winter Palace in St Petersburg or a Russian to have gone to Scotland and anglocised his name?

>Why the spaniards decided to use mainly native sailors?

This is easy to answer, it's because Spain had a small population that was already stretched incredibly thin as it was, they simply had no other choice. I'm sure then natives did a good job, but had they had access to more people, I'm sure teh Spanish would have preferred to use Spanish (or Basque) sailors instead.

Actually, the Guayabo site IS Chibcha and its very similar in design and architecture to what is found in other Chibcha sites in Panamá and Colombia. The reason why you will find in some places that Guayabo is not Chibcha in origin or even Mesoamerican its because the Interamerican region (Costa Rica - Panamá - Colombia - North of Ecuador) was always dismissed as simply part of the sphere of influence of Mesoamerica and Interamerica.

Then again, until 2300 years ago, both of what is today Panamá and Costa Rica was inhabited by Nahualt people, thats around the time the Chibchas from Colombia started moving north and conquered the area. When the Spaniards arrived the Maleku and Huetares of Costa Rica, the biggest and most stable Chibcha settlements on the North, were almost done with the Chorotega, the Southernmost Mesoamerican settlement/peoples.

Regarding the Incans and Aztecs knowing about each other, I know they were aware, but Im not sure how much they knew about the other. The Chibchas had trade routes with the Andinoamerican region and even with the Caribbean islands. We know they knew a lot of each other and there was constant contact. On the other hand, the Chibchas knew nothing of the Mesoamerican region, they barely knew there was a big kingdom on the North the Chorotegas had to pay tribute to, but thats it.

Besides all of that, of course the Mayas and Aztecs knew about each other, all of Mesoamerica was connected. From the Nicoya peninsula to the North of Mexico it was the same socio-economic world. Every kingdom, tribe, town or whatever was aware of the rest of the Mesoamerican world.

>*walks into Russia like nobody's there and captures 3 million soldiers with their pants down.* June 21 1941 high command begs Stalin to mobilize, they are screaming that war is tomorrow, guy does nothing until 3AM next day at which point is way too fucking late to prepare defense against 4 million autismos who just started crossing border. Stalin is so thrown off he doesn't speak to anyone for 10 days and hides himself in his country dacha in Kuntsevo until Molotov, Koganovich and Voenkov came there - at which point he thought they are gonna arrest him and kill him and he thrown his fucking hands up when they came inside. They beg him to come back to Moscow and speak to people, which he does at July 3rd 1941, 11 fucking days into the invasion.

Cortez, Pizarro, or de Soto. 16th century Europeans fighting against complex native American societies in an unprecedented clash of civilizations never before seen in history. There's just so much possibility for an epic narrative in these stories of conquest, but nobody seems to give a shit and would rather make the hundredth Victorian period piece.

I liked Buddhism because it was what my liberal parents acted like Christianity was.

Now that I've listened to most of Alan Watts I just don't give a fuck about religion anymore and follow politics ironically.
>>
>>3812006
could u elaborate?
>>
>>3812080
The way liberal Christians talk about Christianity you'd think it's Buddhism. The way conservative Christians talk about Christianity you'd think it was Islam. In reality it's in a boring middle ground where it's not really restrictive enough to justify the moralizing of the right, but it's also doesn't have the wishy-washy yet somehow intellectually justifiable vibe the upper-middle-class Christians want.

Buddhism was attractive because (the way Watts described it) it was actually a cohesive metaphysics that had no conflicts with science and helped me gain insight into my own psychology as well as society's.
>>
>>3804153
>A better question is: Why do Western fedoras have such an incorrect understanding of buddhism to begin with?
That's not a hard question; it's a foreign religion.
