Our very fist conversation with him has him boast that his name comes from the fact that he crashes human airlines for fun. He spends the entire story obstructing, belittling and hurting other characters which Fern completely ignores when he finally kicks the bucket. His "dignified" death was as unearned as Jay's eternal punishment as a coffee homonculus.

Jay may not have been the "nicest" person, but he was still human, and he reacted as how a human would to most things in this setting. Believe me, I wanted Jay to overcome these things and become a true member of the primary Cast as well. They never really made it clear in the film that the family survived.Zack Snyder has said this scene was justified because otherwise Superman wouldn't KNOW he didn't like killing people, but I think that's bullshit. I don't have to rape someone to know I shouldn't rape people because rape is fucked up from an objective point of view.I'd recommend reading what Mark Waid (author of the excellent Superman: Birthright) said about it. It's probably the best, most coherent explanation of the anti-neck snap view point.
