Nope, not in the slightest. It's a common misconception that Big Bang cosmology is supposed to explain how the Universe started, but it actually doesn't. It merely tells us that ~14 billion years ago the Universe was in a super condensed state, to the point where our understanding of physics breaks down (and therefore, asking "where did it come from" in terms of our understanding of the laws of the Universe today is probably *literally* meaningless). Saying "they lied" is a pretty uncharitable statement. The Shuttle eventually totally failed in this respect, but it's unfair to argue that it was some deliberate lie. They were still operating with the assumption that the Shuttle would be a money-making venture several missions in. That was the context of pic related, for example, after a mission in which they were conducting commercial operations.

The discussion for *why* the Shuttle failed is a huge one, there were a whole bunch of factors involved.
