Obscure monsters thread lets go! Let's give some attention to the not so well known creatures from around the world.

I'll start. The thing in the pic is a squonk from american fokelore. It is a sad creature said to be so ugly and so aware of it's uglyness that it cries constantly and hide away so that no one else can see it. A man once caught a squonk in a sack and attempted to show his friend. There was nothing but water in the sack as the squonk had dissolved in it's own tears.

Guyascutus is a fearsome critter of the lumberjack stories of North America. Sometimes it was described as a deer with rabbit ears and fangs while it has also been described as a kind of giant lizard; storyteller John Dashney spun a yarn about his grandfather hunting them on the regular and claimed they were built along the lines of a razorback hog. The Guyascutus is characterized as having some legs shorter than the other which gives it the ability to walk easily on hilly and rocky terrain. It also swung from the trees with a powerful tail. It was once a part of a wild animal show in a circus. Many people paid to see it but the circus entertainers warned that it had escaped. People fled in fear and the entertainers were able to profit from all their takings. Another tells of a farmer who was able to breed the beast with his sheep producing a pet that easily walked the hilly farms but was slow on flat roads.

The Guyascutus was a popular creature amongst the early Americans and as a consequence the Guascutus has many names. The other names are: Cutercurse, Cuter-Cuss, Godphro, Godaphro, Gouger, Guyanoosa, Gwinter, Hunkus, Lunkus, Mountain Stem-Winder, Prock, Prock Gwinter, Sawger, Rockabore, Wampahoofus, Sidehill-Dodger, Sidehill-Gouger, Sidehill-Ganger, Rickaboo Racker, Sideswipe, Sidehill Wowser, and Sidewinder.

I've heard a similar story involving a similarly named land-bird creature. A guy would come out covered in fake blood screaming "The Hodag escaped and it ate the Geosticutis!"

this one is pretty common and not so obscure if you live up north.

The Antler Bar in Sault Ste. Marie had a furred trout mounted on their wall, among other fantastic taxidermy, when I went there on a trip in '85. Anybody know if The Antler is still there? Anybody ever see any other furred trout mounted anywhere else?

What do u mean by furred trout like a literal hairy fish?..

I have a book written in the 1800s by Sir Alexander Burnes (British explorer) about his travels in India. I remember reading in one part about the locals around the Punjab region being afraid of certain river monsters. They were wary of rivers due to some sort of giant river octopus, and a type of large crocodile-like creature.

Yo that reminds me. When I was 9 I was plTi g under a bridge and saw a small catfish covered in hair. I didn't touch it cause I assumed it was some type of fungus (the fish was dying but not quite dead)

Never seen another one like it. Real thin fine fur about 2 inches long, blackish green. just drifting to the current. Super odd looking.

Really any Tall Tales creature from American Lumberjack folklore is pretty interesting in a way that older and more traditionally known monsters are not. Hide Behinds and Splinter Cats I think are particularly interesting.

Pic related is pretty comprehensive and makes for a great coffee table book

There actually is a fungus that infects fish called Saprolegnia. It grows on a fishes scales and tends to look like strands of white hair.
>>
>>20009799
>Saprolegnia
Damn nature you scary
>>
There's something special about monsters that just want to be left alone and don't go out of their way to hunt or screw with people. They feel more natural.

I always felt that beings that are described and passed down through native tradition had the highest chance of actually existing at some point. Mostly because of this story of a Canadian tribe who was able to preserve the exact location of a 14,000yr old settlement through oral tradition. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/archeological-find-affirms-heiltsuk-nation-s-oral-history-1.4046088

Who knows what else might've be out there at some point.
>>
>>20011706
ikr. It's like they're just animals minding their own business and humans happen to stumble across them.
>>
>>20011860
The evidence for that particular one is circumstantial however because its known the Aborigines hunted megafauna by burning them out
>>
I remember this creature in Japanese mythology that was a weasel with scythes for hands. They would trip people traveling along the mountain side. Always fascinated me and was probably the first cryptid I learned about.

You my nigga, anon. I bought this book years ago and it's been indispensable for me for references. I really like that they include a lot of varied woodcuts and illustrations.

Pic related was always my go to as a kid. Robert Ingpen's art really makes the book worthwhile, even when some of the info isn't quite right.
