Mommy and me skincare? As January Jones admits to regularly moisturizing her four-year-old son, FEMAIL finds out whether toddlers REALLY need a beauty routine
- January, 38, told People magazine that she uses moisturizer on her four-year-old-son Xander's skin
- FEMAIL consults with a dermatologist on whether toddlers really need moisturizer
A self-proclaimed product junkie, January Jones, 38, sticks to a skincare regimen that includes a $795 Sisley moisturizer to keep her complexion looking ageless.
While the actress recently told Into the Gloss that she didn't start caring about her skin until she started modeling, she's already instilling the virtues of skincare maintenance into her four-year-old son, Xander Dane.
The Last Man on Earth star told People magazine that she's 'really strict about getting him moisturized', adding, 'I may be over-grooming him. I don't know!'
Starting them young: January Jones, 38, told People magazine this week that she's very strict about keeping her four-year-old son Xander's skin moisturized
Necessary? New York-based dermatologist Dr. Schultz told FEMAIL that unless Xander (right) suffers from dry skin conditions, wearing moisturizer at his young age has no benefit
Commenters of the article were split over whether using moisturizer on a toddler is in fact 'over-grooming'.
According to Dr. Neal Schultz, New York City-based dermatologist, host of DermTV.com and creator of BeautyRx by Dr. Schultz, the answer is: probably.
'Moisturizers do two things: They help relieve the condition of dry skin and help with fine lines and wrinkles,' he told FEMAIL. 'On a four-year-old who has normal skin, it's not necessary or going to prevent anything.'
There is, however, one skincare product that January should be strict about.
'At the age of four or five it's great to get your kids used to the concept of putting on sunscreen,' said Dr. Schultz. 'When they enter into the prepubescent period and their skin starts to make oil, it's time to start thinking about a cleanser, and by the mid- to late-teens, when some can start experiencing combination skin, it's time to use a moisturizer.'
Kid's choice: The Last Man on Earth actress also told People that she lets Xander choose his own haircuts and styles, a privilege she says, he enjoys
Her own routine: January's skincare regimen includes a $795 moisturizer from Sisley
That being said, if a child has eczema or shows signs of dry skin, Dr. Schultz advises applying a lotion right after a shower or a bath as a soothing treatment.
'Besides moisturizer, use soaps and cleansers that are gentle and run a cold water humidifier.'
Brands that he recommends to his patients who have children with skin conditions are Cetaphil, Dove and Purpose - all which are mild enough for young, sensitive skin.
If you're unsure whether your child could benefit from a hydration boost, it's always best to consult with your doctor.
