Daring Bakers: January

This one’s from Tel Aviv, Israel. I still think I should get extra credit for baking while travelling.😉

This month’s challenge is brought to us by Karen of Baking Soda and Zorra of 1x umruehren bitte aka Kochtopf. They have chosen Tuiles from The Chocolate Book by Angélique Schmeink and Nougatine and Chocolate Tuiles from Michel Roux.

Didn’t think that I’d get the chance to do this one, as I spent January in Israel, Turkey and Jordan. In fact I’ll still be in either Jordan or Israel when this gets published on the blog. I tried uploading pictures but it’s not working on this computer, so I’m giving up and hoping to find a better computer later on instead. You may have to wait for photos.

Tuiles was the perfect recipe for a travelling daring baker. Not only are all the ingredients pretty basic things that you would find pretty much anywhere, but it’s also not one of those entire-day recipes with 6000 components that need to be assembled. Not that I don’t like those recipes, but you have to admit that while travelling, simple is better for recipes.

We had no problems with any part of this. We made the molds out of an old milk carton that we cut up, and that worked pretty well. Also we found that we had to work quickly when we had trays that were really full of cookies once they  came out of the oven, cause when they cool they don’t shape or bend, they just crack, and on the other hand, if you leave a cookie too soon while it’s still hot it won’t hold the shape you just bent it in. We found this out because we didn’t want to dirty a ton of things shaping them so we tried at first to just shape it and move it away to make room for another cookie.

Anyway, we loved the taste of them. My sister prefers the slightly thicker ones and I prefer the thinner more crispy ones, but we both liked them all. We decorated them by adding melted chocolate to some batter and piping that on with makeshift piping bags (I need to learn to make better makeshift piping bags). I definitely want to experiment with these again, but I feel like they turned out well.  We planned to pair them with vanilla ice cream and drizzle it with honey, but we never got that far; we just ate them as they were.

Thanks for the great challenge! As always check out the blogroll here and the forum here.

I lied!

There will be a daring bakers post this month after all, though pictures might be really delayed. I tried uploading them today and they don’t want to upload. But there will be a post.

Other updates… we had a great time in Turkey and are back in Israel.  Spent last weekend at a kibbutz near the Jordanian border with some family there, and it was a really great time.

Tomorrow we’re planning to go out swing dancing in Tel Aviv, and then on Wednesday we’re heading down to Eilat, and from there to Jordan. We don’t have so much time so we decided to cut out Egypt and save it for another trip some other time.

More updates soon..
