Job search updates

Amazing how quickly things go with job searches for Korea. Why is everything always a rush?!

Hannah’s place wants me there before September, which is just not happening. But of course, it’s not only that; they have some contract issues too and were not flexible at all with changing their contract (because it’s a chain, of course), and so they’re out.

In the meantime, there’s a place that looks fairly promising. It’s the Yongsan place through ESL Planet. Things are still in negotiation, but the contract looks OK (if they make the fairly minor changes I suggested), the location is good, the pay will likely be 2.6mil/month, the hours are 9:30am to 5pm. It’s kindy/elementary, and they even have a short cooking class every  morning, which is awesome. The apartment photos look alright, though the place is a little on the small side. But what can you expect? It’s in central Seoul. They have a curriculum, but are open to changes. Things seem just the right amount of flexible. The vice-director seems nice. It’d be a rush (they’d want me there early September.. say the 8th), though. But doable. But not to jump ahead of things, I still have to talk to current and former teachers, hear back about my requested contract changes, hear what the final salary offer is, etc.

Hoping to hear back from Angela soon too.

Missing the daring baker goodness

I originally thought I’d be skipping this one, as I was out of the country until the 24th (leaving 6 possible baking days this month before the posting date, and not all of them free). Then I came back and said, what the hey, 6 partial days is enough. Then by Sunday when I hadn’t started yet, I realized it wouldn’t happen. Luckily, I already emailed Lisa and Ivonne a couple months back to let them know I had to miss this month’s and last month’s. Then I (through some crazy luck) managed to do last month’s in a restaurant kitchen in Ecuador while on vacation. So I guess I’m already ahead of what I thought, right? Even though I’m allowed to miss a few challenges each year (especially if we have good reasons like travelling for nearly the entire month) I still don’t like to skip challenges. I guess all the better to come back and bake up a storm next month, right?

Gen, I assume you’re in, as you’ll be visiting me in August and this could be will be lots of fun…😉

Job search: officially started

Looking for jobs starting in September:

Through ESL planet: Yongsan, 10-6, 2.5mil. Good reputation, they’ve placed people there before and it seems to be a good place.

Through Hannah: Apkujeong, 9-5, 2.6-2.7mil. Nice director, not a tiny box-like apartment (astounding for Apkujeong).

Through Angela: She’s on vacation now in Europe, but when she comes back she’ll see if her friend still needs an ESL teacher for her school. The offer I got back in February for March (which I didn’t take because I wasn’t sure about being able to transfer my visa through work) was for 2.6 teaching ESL and cooking.

Looks promising!

Back in Montreal

I’m back and I’m tired.

Went right from the airport to my aunt’s birthday party on the top of the olympic stadium, where I ate yummy food and watched the fireworks (Canada’s turn today). Good view. Dancing on Friday. Sleeping now.

Time flies

I can’t believe there are less than two weeks left of this trip! We’re in Puno, Perú now. Just got here from Cusco not long ago, and heading to Copacabana tomorrow afternoon (in Bolivia). We heard the Bolivian side of Lake Titikaka was nicer than the Peruvian side from pretty much everyone, so that’s the plan now.

Highlights so far on this trip have been Mindo and Cuenca in Ecuador, and Huaraz, Cusco and Machu Picchu in Perú. There will eventually be pictures and more when we get back, as we have been writing about our trip as we go and taking lots of pictures of course.

I’m also glad I’ll be back in Montreal just in time for a bunch of things, including my aunt’s 50th birthday party the night I come back, the last dance at the old Cat’s Corner studio (they’re moving) a couple of days later, and also in time for some of my friends to visit me! I’m also still planning to go back to Korea in the fall, and so I’ll have to start looking for a job there once I get back. Yay, back to Korea!
