Pretty productive piping

Alliteration rocks.

I spent most of the day today icing the three large and three small cakes for CCX. They are all iced, with shell borders, and two of the big cakes have the Cat’s Corner logo piped on it in stars. I just had to say that after all that piping (Debbie helped, thankfully), I am really happy with how nice the cakes look. I can’t wait until CCX when I can actually lay them out properly and take a gazillion pictures of them while hungry people wait for me to get out of the way.

In the meantime, though I have no pictures so you will have to be patient.

I am now taking suggestions as to what to do with the leftover buttercream. I have about a cup of lemon buttercream and maybe two cups and a half of chocolate buttercream. So other than attacking it with a spoon, which is out (swiss meringue buttercream = very buttery), help me figure out what to do with it. I have right now (in addition to the CCX cakes) some of the leftover practice cake, so I think I don’t need more cake right now, but I figure someone’s got to have a great creative idea. Also, is it possible to freeze buttercream? Does it freeze well?

Dammit.

My Daring Baker post is clearly going to be late. I’m really really sorry DBers, but this one won’t happen until november 4th ish. The dance school I work at is having their 10th anniversary celebration this weekend by having a whole workshop with dances and all. I am in charge of housing (finally all done! There should be no more problems now), and in charge of food for the late night including the anniversary cake(s). On top of everything, I am also starting to take over as the office manager of the dance school. Also as you can tell from the post before this one, the beginning and middle of the month were not void of baking either.

But no excuses! It’s my fault. I might not have had time to have done it this week, but I might have done it really early in the month if I had thought ahead about it. But there WILL be a post because I really really will get it done, only check back here Nov 4th.

Some of the other (more organized, on time) DBs have already started posting theirs. Check it out at the blogroll.

Baking, baking, baking

I’ve been baking a lot this month and sadly have no pictures yet to show for it.😦

I promise that will be fixed soon.

(Practice) sponge cake for CCX

(Practice) sponge cake for CCX

What I’ve been making lately:

– Orange truffles for Syl’s wedding

– Flourless chocolate torte for Syl’s wedding

– Flourless chocolate torte for Marie’s birthday/thanksgiving party

– Three large sponge cakes for Cat’s Corner’s Anniversary.

– Still to go: this month’s Daring Bakers challenge.

In other news, I am dangerously low on eggs. I blame the sponge cakes.

Formal offer

The promising place gave me a formal offer of 2.35 mil won/month. This is low, but they have a salary scale, so it’s at least fair compared to others. Besides, if you factor in the 8 weeks vacation, it ends up being about like geting 2.6 and 2 weeks vacation.

Right now I’m waiting to hear from some teachers who work there. Right now here’s what it looks like:

Upsides: long vacation, paid professional development, a school that cares about real education (looks like), my own homeroom class (not more than 17 students total), being at a real school (more security than a hagwon), having something decent looking arranged before my trip (had to say it).

Downsides: long hours, lots of prep, occasional weekends, video taped teaching (not great, but not the end of the world), possible camps (how does this affect vacation time? Would this be instead of vacation time? If not I don’t mind this), housing deposit (not great, not the end of the world), and almost all of the voluntary resignation clause in the contract (in such a case, must pay back initial airfare, even after 6 months, also they can charge you for any damages to the school created by your leaving early, eg, students leaving. Bad, bad). Also, the contract doesn’t mention that they’d give me a stove, though they do mention they will give me one pot, two spoons, and other very specific things like that. I think it’s a mistake, though, or just generally assumed to be basic. I am asking about it.

Clearly we have some things to negotiate before I accept. Most important being voluntary resignation clause of the contract, being guaranteed a stove, clearing up the camp issue, and of slightly less importance, the housing deposit. The only major ones I’m likely to have problems with is the voluntary resignation clause. And the housing deposit, but that’s not a dealbreaker for me.
