The Green Line is a dangerous illusion – but we should guard the Red Line!

20 Saturday Apr 2013

The Green Line is a dangerous illusion – but we should guard the Red Line!

This article was written (in Arabic and Hebrew) as contribution to the booklet (pictured above) published by “The Jaffa group for One Democratic State” on the occasion of the March of Return in the destroyed village of “Hubeiza”, 16/4/2013.

To bring change we have to begin with recognition of reality… With the occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip in 1967, Israel united the land of Palestine under its occupation. What we confront is one ApartheidState from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. Do we have to seek a return to the partition, which lasted from 1948 until 1967, or should we work for the reversal of the situation, the overthrow of apartheid and the establishment of one Palestine, free and democratic, on all the occupied land?

The “realists” tell us that Israel wouldn’t agree to the one-state solution. In reality Israel does not agree to any solution. Therefore, for any solution to be realistic we should be able to impose it. The realization of any solution depends on the building of a strong mass movement, which will implement it on the ground.

The development of illusions about re-partition of Palestine as a solution to the conflict is dangerous and delays progress towards any solution. This proposition pushes the right of return to the sidelines, promotes the division of the Palestinians in the homeland between “67” and “48”, legitimizes the occupation and the ethnic cleansing of 48, accepts the principle of a Jewish state, recognizes the occupation state of as an expression of “the right of self-determination for the Jews”, while it prevents true partnership in the struggle for liberation from the apartheid regime.

Sticking to the principle of the unity of the land of Palestine, and the rejection of the occupation and ethnic cleansing wherever it is, does not mean that we are facing the choice between either the liberation of the whole of Palestine at once or no liberation forever. Israel was forced to withdraw from the Gaza Strip under the pressure of the popular uprising and armed resistance – this is an achievement but it is not a solution.

Re-launching the project of liberation of all the land of Palestine, through the program of one democratic state, can re-formulate the methods of organization and the laws of confrontation and therefore requires profound study and full clarity.

One of the strengths in this solution is that while it refuses to waive the Palestinian right it simultaneously presents the best solution for splitting the Jewish population from Zionism and integrating them as citizens with equal rights in a democratic state. While it is impossible that Israel, as a racist institution, will accept this solution, our work among the Jewish public to promote this solution pulls the rug from under the feet of this institution.

This solution is the just and comprehensive solution and it includes everyone. We have to understand that it is not a solution for “us” – or for “the good people” – but it is a solution for all. It will be embraced by those who are looking for their rights because it ensures their rights. And it will be accepted by everybody else because there is no other option.

As we stand for the unity of the land and propose democratic solution, based on human rights to all people, there remains one red line about which there is no compromise and from which there is no retreat. It should be a solution to all the inhabitants of Palestine and all those who have a right in this country – and upholds the usurped rights before any others. The first to have the right to participate in the construction of free and democratic Palestine are the Palestinian refugees, the victims of Zionist ethnic cleansing. Any waiver on the right of return can be considered participation in the crime of ethnic cleansing, a crime against humanity with no statute of limitations, just as the right of return itself doesn’t expire with time.

We speak of a single democratic state in all of Palestine – and the return of all the refugees to all over the free homeland.

Occupation with Lust…

Occupation with Lust…

You might have thought that the occupation is showing some fatigue, being condemned all over the world, having no political perspective after so many years of conflict… The following small story may change your mind.

As Israel celebrates 65 years to its 1948 occupation of 78% of the land of Palestine, we had our own small celebration. Muhammad Kana’aneh, Abu As’ad, who was the Secretary General of Abna Al-Balad between 2000 and 2011, was released from prison on Sunday (14.4.2013). He was accused of throwing stones at the Israeli Police in the Golan Heights on 5.6.2011, while the police was busy massacring unarmed Palestinians who approached the border fence from the Syrian side.

This evening we went to visit him in his home to say “Hamd’ilellah ‘A Salameh”. We made our way to the township of ‘Arabeh in the lower Galilee on the dark roads, amid the light of fireworks in the Jewish-only settlements on the tops of the surrounding mountains. As we sat there, drinking sada coffee and eating baklawah, he told us the detailed story how he was released…

But, first, you need some background. Abu As’ad was arrested many times for his activities against the racist regime. In 2008, when he was released from four and a half years term (for public meetings with a Palestinian activist in Jordan), many people waited to greet him at the gates of the Shata/Gilbo’a prison near the city of Bisan. All the way back (some 60 kilometers) the convoy of cars waiving Palestinian flags raised astonishment at Jewish towns and villages and jubilation in Arab ones. It finished with a mass procession in Arabeh itself, from the entrance of the township to his home at the center.

This time the Israeli police was determined not to allow this type of celebrations to be repeated. The professional officers on the ground showed all the makings that the high Israeli echelons lack: Learning from experience, planning, cunning, determination and lust…

They sneaked Abu As’ad from the Shata prison in a closed police car at 06:00 am. The people that came to wait for his release had no chance to see him, and they kept gathering and waiting. From Bisan’s police he was transferred to Misgav – the front guard of the occupation supervising ‘Arabeh. He was not allowed to call or inform anybody where he was until he was a few kilometers from his home.

But Abu As’ad is not easy to fix. He quarreled with his guards and will not let them take him to his house in a police car. So there was some compromise and they let him free in an Olive Grove, not far from ‘Arabeh.

There is some good ending also for my Palestinian (and generally pro-people) readers. Abu As’ad hitch-hiked his way to the other entrance of ‘Arabeh and waited there to the reception crowd that was coming from the prison gates. The reception in ‘Arabeh took place anyway.

In the Galilee, 65 years on, it is occupation and popular resistance at their best.

Zionist intellectuals offer a Pizza to Samer Issawi

Zionist intellectuals offer a Pizza to Samer Issawi

Israel’s Prime Minister’s wife, Mrs. Netanyahu, became a symbol of insensitivity, a local Marie Antoinette, when she famously offered pizzas to students activists on hunger strike against rising tuition fees. She didn’t express support for their just demands, nor did she show any admiration for their sacrifice or sympathy with their suffering. All she displayed was the light minded selfishness and hedonism of someone who is complete stranger to the notions of a just cause, struggle or sacrifice.

Some of those who claim to be “Israeli intellectuals” have proven today that their arrogance and insensitivity far exceed those of Mrs. Netanyahu.

“Writers and poets, including Eli Amir, Amos Oz and AB. Yehoshua, turned in a personal letter to Samer Al Issawi, on hunger strike for more than 230 days, and called on him to stop the strike.” So we read in today’s (13/04/2013) press.

No, they did not wake up when Samer was arrest without any cause, as they didn’t protest at the imprisonment without trial of thousands of other Palestinians, including political activists, journalists and intellectuals. They didn’t even raise their voices while Samer was on a hunger strike for 200 days, as the continuing disregard to his cry for freedom puts his life under imminent danger.

What caused their response was Samer’s hearts’ breaking letter from his bed in the hospital, published in Haaretz by the courageous journalist Gideon Levy. Samer writes in his letter:

“… I’ve chosen to write to you: intellectuals, academics, writers, lawyers, journalists and activists in civilian Israeli society…

“Israelis, I’m looking for an educated one among you who has passed the stage of the shadows and mirrors game. I want him to look at me as I lose my consciousness. Let him wipe the gunpowder from his pen, the shooting sounds from his mind, and see my face’s features etched in his eyes. I will see him and he will see me. I will see how tense he is about the future and he will see me, a ghost clinging to his side and not leaving.

“Perhaps you will be asked to write a romantic story about me. You will testify I was a creature of whom nothing remained but a skeleton, breathing and choking from hunger, losing consciousness now and then. And after your cold silence, my story will be an achievement to add to your resume. When your students will grow up they will believe the Palestinian died of hunger … Then you can celebrate your cultural, moral supremacy with a death ritual.”

They did not rush to defend Samer Issawi, to demand his freedom, to save his life. They cried out to expel his living ghost, which knocks on their doors, breaking the peace of the occupation and satiety.

They did not, God Forbid, turn to the authorities to request for Samer’s release. They did not even care to ask what crimes he did that caused the State of Israel to chase him on their behalf, in the name of the public whose conscience and morality they purport to represent, to his expected and approaching death.

They requested Samer to stop the hunger strike unconditionally, to agree to be confined for many years in prison for no reason, in violation of the prisoners’ swap, when the only accusation against him is that he went out of the “restricted zone” drawn for him in his city Jerusalem.

Even the Pizza that they offer Samer is a used, worn and cold Pizza from the kitchen of Mrs. Netanyahu’s husband.

They write about: “New encouraging signs that the negotiations between the sides will resume,” adding that these measures may secure Samer’s release alongside other Palestinians imprisoned in Israel.

Probably they don’t really live in Israel. Please remind me, Gentlemen, when did Israel release Palestinian prisoners due to negotiations and not in a prisoners’ exchange?

Of course, the Zionist morality is never far from self interests and the “current affairs” of give and take. As they do not oppose the occupation unconditionally, they are not demanding the unconditional release of any prisoners, even if there is no reason for their arrests. Why, what happened? How will Israel achieve its goals if it will not trade in occupied territories, in the freedom of thousands of prisoners languishing in its prison and in the lives of millions of residents humiliated every day while crossing military checkpoints and groaning in the big prison called occupation?

The Zionist intellectuals have a whopping bargain to offer Samer and the Palestinians, really the deal of the Century: Give up the right of return of millions of Palestinian refugees; Forget about the land that was robbed by the settlers through military decrees, faked papers and extortion; Recognize Israel as a Jewish state and give your consent to the status of your Palestinian brethren as second-class citizens. Only then would the Zionist intellectuals recommend to the government to bring the negotiations to a blessed conclusion and slightly loosen the shackles on Samer’s corpse.
