Shopping Lists

We live on lists of one sort or another, I'm sure plenty of others do as well.

Today's shopping lists can live in your organiser or in your kitchen just as easily.

The first one is designed for A5 size (A4 that can be scaled down to A5 or A6 or B6 as you wish)

The order of the categories might look a little odd, but that is the order of the different sections in our local supermarket here in France. You can of course edit the file to suit your own needs fairly easily.

The other list is a Filofax Personal size shopping list insert and the category order is a bit more conventional! But again you can change it is you want.

Happy Shopping!

Distributor 'Under The Spotlight' - Group-4P

Today I would like to introduce you to An and Christophe from Group-4P who are distributors for Filofax products in Belgium...

1. Where are you based?

Group-4P is located in Affligem, Belgium, near the E40 route from Brussels to Ghent. We are the exclusive distributor for Filofax, Letts of London & Yard-O-Led for Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxembourg. We are a relatively small company of 8 people.

2. Do you have a shop? And if you do where is it located?

We do not have a shop, we distribute today to approximately 400 shops in de Benelux. We have got a showroom that is open for our (potential) customers and for interested groups. We do sell to individual customers through our webshop www.agendasshop.com and on Ebay under the name "Bouteia".

3. How long have you been in business.

Group 4P, as a distributor of Filofax, already existed for more than 20 years. We, as a couple, are very new in the business. My husband Christophe took over the company in February of 2013, after a career as marketing director of a large Belgian bank. I joined a couple of months later after a career of bank branch manager.

4. As well as the Filofax brand of organisers what other brands do you stock?

Besides Filofax (and Letts of Londen, YOL), we distribute 6 other brands.

Our goal is to only distribute brands that are "authentic" or stand out: because they were the first ones to distribute the product, they invented the product or they have got an extraordinary design.

Today this led us to the following brands:
  • Graf von Faber Castell : the company was founded in 1761 in Germany as a manufacturer of wooden pencils (the first one to commercialise "the pencil" as we know it today). Today they combine the timeless design and modern technology to produce the Graf von Faber Castell collection: Pencils, fountain pens, ball pens, roller pens and fine-writers on one side and a very luxury leather collection on the other hand.
  • Pinetti: the company was founded in 1983 in Bergamo (Italy) . Their mission statement is to produce craftsmanship, made in Italy. They only use top quality materials, respecting the environment. Our focus within their offer are the notebooks, guest books and desk accessories.
  • Ögon Designs: the company was founded in 1994 in France. They were the first one to introduce the aluminum wallet, that was RFID- proof. Besides the aluminum wallet, that holds 7 credit cards, they also produce a coin holder, a wallet and from beginning of march a one-touch business card holder and a lady bag in different colours.
  • Bombata: the company was founded in 1994 in Italy. Bombata is a colorful collection of briefcases, wallets, laptop and tablet cases. They produce very functional and original cases with an incredible price/quality ratio. Again from March on they launch a new product range including some "Chubbies" (small suitcases as hand luggage and backpacks)
  • El Casco: the company was founded in 1920 to produce revolvers in Spain ! During the great depression the owners were forced to diversify and they began to produce desktop accessories (the best known is the stapler that still reflects the design  of a riffle in it). The production process is still 100% manual.
  • Rubinato: the company started in the 50's as a shop in the center of Treviso for stationary items. Even though they produce a whole range of magnificent writing instruments we only distribute the "Nothing More" products: the more modern writing instruments and accessories.

5. Which brands/models/sizes do you find are the most popular?

Filofax is still very popular in the Benelux and particularly in Belgium & Luxembourg. This year our top sellers were the Saffiano's, the Originals, the Finsburys and the Fusions. Strangely there is little appetite for the Malden series.

What strikes for Filofax is that besides the organizers as everybody knows them the folders are doing very well

6. Which model/size do you prefer to use yourself?

An: I started without using a Filofax (shame on me) and today I use three of them and one Flex. I use an Original – Green A5 as a diary which I like VERY much: I love the colour and my organiser has to lie flat.

I use a Pocket Malden vintage pink as a wallet and a Calipso A5 – Pink to follow up my cliënts.

Don't know why but I prefer big organisers. For my iPad I use a Flex Smooth which works very good for me.

Christophe:  In the past I used an A5 Classic cherry. Now I use 3: a brown slim Amazona as diary, a black A4 Finsbury to manage projects, etc & a brown leather tan Flex iPad holder.

7. What trends do you think we will see in future years in the paper planner market?

Definitely products that combine the use of tablets and paper.

8. Which model of Filofax do you think should be reinvented as a Heritage model?

Without no doubt: the Portland or Cavendish (if not for the beautiful , classy design then for the rings)

9. What other information about your company do you think would be of interest to our readers?

I would like to inverse the question: if a reader has a good idea what other brand would fit our current range and would be interesting to distribute in the Benelux, we would surely appreciate the tips!

10. What is your favourite pen?

If I have to choose (I like a lot of pens) I pick the Graf von Faber Castell (what did you think?) Classic Grenadilla.

On the one side because the barrel is sheathed in wood and for this is very close to the "core" of the company (wooden pencils), on the other side I prefer the dark Grendilla over the lighter Pernambucco-wood.

11. Away from the office how do you relax?

Even we haven't got very much time away from the office today we like to spend time with our three kids and we never say no to a good glass of wine.

Thank you An and Christophe, I think we need to talk about a potential visit to your showroom at some time in the future.

Filofax News Update

The UK retail environment has been getting tougher and tougher in the last few years. The landscape in the typical UK High Street has had almost unthinkable changes in the last few years, no longer will you find FW Woolworths, Jessops (apart from a few profitable locations), HMV have downsized, Comet, Past Times, Habitat, the list continues to grow.

Some of the reasons for these changes come down to competition from on-line retailers, and higher and higher rents on shops, also competition from out of town retail parks where often shoppers don't pay for parking.

Bosses in this new retail environment have to make sometimes quick decisions if they are going to save their companies from impending doom and not allow their high street retail arm to drain their companies of capital reserves as they strive to have a presence on the high street.

So it was not a total surprise to hear this last week that Filofax are sadly going to close their Conduit Street store. The store has been part of the landscape for 20 - 30 years, may be longer. But all around it now are shops selling items of far higher selling prices than your humble Filofax organiser, this has driven up rents in the area to a level that Filofax are no longer able to sustain. In the case of Filofax they  faced a 30% rent increase last year.

It's too early to say, but Filofax might have another shop in the future, but in a less costly location.  In the mean time Filofax will be holding a closing down sale and shutting up shop within the next two weeks. You will of course continue to see Filofax organisers and inserts at other retail outlets such as WH Smiths, Rymans and Staples to name just a few.

The Philofaxy event at the shop in late September has gone through a very quick rearrangement and I'm very pleased with Filofax for responding so quickly and co-operating with us to still have an event on the same day... details of which are still being finalised.

On another positive note the Filofax website rebuild is getting closer to being finished with testing of the full site commencing this week. Details of the launch date for the new site will be announced on Philofaxy when the project is signed off and ready to go live.

And here are some recent photos of the Conduit Street store, thank you to Dee for sending these in.

Free for All Friday No. 148

For many, September is a time for returning from summer vacations and travel, and settling into new routines. I find myself faced with shopping for warmer clothes, travel gear for an upcoming trip to Ireland, and a Bat Mitzvah gift, as well as a few upcoming birthdays.

It also means I get to use my Filofax for one of my favorite purposes—shopping! Not that shopping is my favorite activity. It can be so stressful! Where should I go? Am I getting a good price? Have I already given my niece one of these?

My Filofax diary helps me remember birthdays, but I also use it for lots of lists. Shopping lists. Christmas lists. Lists of places to shop (starting with places that carry Filofaxes!) Gift ideas. I also keep a list of the colors/patterns of the bow ties I've given my dad, so I don't repeat myself.

Does your Filofax help you shop till you drop?

Filofax Inserts at Maudie Made

We often receive emails from people wishing to 'advertise' on our blog, 99% of them totally unsuited, but I was pleasantly surprised when I opened this particular email last night.

I replied and asked Maudie to tell us abit about themselves and their products.

I am currently studying to be a book conservator and have always had a love of stationery and paper. I think I got my first organiser about 11 years ago, which was a mini WHSmith Filofax imitation, which was great and really small - I was immediately hooked! A few years later I upgraded to a Mini Finsbury Tan Filofax, which still remains my favourite and has a good worn look to it!

When I moved onto a Filofax, I quickly became disappointed with the lack of colourful and interesting inserts available for the mini Filofaxes in comparison to other sizes, specifically I was after colour - colourful dividers and colourful squared paper (there's nothing quite like squared paper!), which was annoyingly hard to find if it existed at all - so I thought I would make my own - and Maudie Stationery was born.

My mum has a pocket filofax, so naturally I started making pocket sized inserts for her, and then moved onto the personal size as I started using a Personal Slimline Fliofax. I have also dabbled in the covers, but have not had much luck finding the snap opening systems, so they remain ring binders with fun fabric covers.

I found people seemed quite keen on my stationery so attended a couple of fairs, and now have an online shop with Etsy called maudie.made. I'll also be at The Crafty Fox Fair in Brixton on the 16th April if anyone would like to pop along and say hello!

Future plans hopefully include a few more fairs before the year is out and attempting to make personal sized diaries for 2012, which I haven't done before!

Thank you Maudie, and I've already seized on that last paragraph... could we at last have a source of that ultimate personal size refill? Look out for a future post about this I'm sure between us we can come up with something that will be something we will all want, but we can't at present buy it from a convenient source.

If you want to see more of Maudie's work take a look at the Website, they are also on Facebook and the on-line shop.

Filofax offers in Tesco and elsewhere..

I've never seen Filofax organisers quite this cheap before, it even beats Ebay prices... and you get Tesco Clubcard points too! For those that don't know... Tesco is a UK supermarket chain, but they also have stores in other parts of the world.

One of our 'roving reporters' spotted these on sale in a Tesco Superstore in Edinburgh at their Hermiston Gait store. A Tesco Superstore is far from the biggest either. Not sure if these offers are only at that store or at other superstores around UK. Can any one confirm it?

Looking at these, I wonder how many of them find there way on to Ebay at starting prices considerably higher than the shelf edge price....

Another UK store that seems to have a lot of good offers is WH Smiths with up to 50% off organisers and inserts.

And then one must not forget the stores on our suppliers page, which also offer various discounts, and of course the chance to donate the commission to our Breast Cancer Campaign collection...

The Pen Shop - Edinburgh

Craig has kindly sent us some pictures of the Filofax displays at The Pen Shop, where he works in Jenners department store in Edinburgh. It's a while since I've seen such a large display of organisers so well displayed.

They pretty much sell all the organisers and refills that are available to them.  They believe they have the largest range in Scotland.

So if you are in Edinburgh pay a visit to the shop and see the wonderful display and be sure to ask for Craig.

If you like it... buy it..

During our epic Sunday meet up, both Laurie and I agreed that whilst Filofax of old was about buying your organiser and then every year just buying a new diary refill and may be some additional pages, it is very different these days.

As you have frequently commented on, a Filofax can be considered to be a 'fashion accessory'. A different organiser for each season, or to match your different handbags.

They want you to buy more than one of their organisers, even if you have that size already. It is repeat sales. They feed this habit by bringing out new organisers in different styles and in different colours.

However, there are only certain models that seem to stay in the catalogue for many years none stop and we often see requests for a particular model/colour that has disappeared from the catalogue...

So the motto is if you like it... and you really need another Filofax... buy it whilst it is available...

I'm going to tempt you to go and look to see what is new over at Filofax UK....
