If I had to rank my favourite CNY snack of all time, I think cornflake cookies might come up tops. I don’t know what it is about cornflakes in baked goods that makes them so addictive. I haven’t been able to stop nibbling on these crunchy, sweet, salty, nutty, buttery bits of goodness ever since I made …
I am barely catching my breath after Christmas and now Chinese New Year is around the corner! Did anyone else notice how Chinese New Year songs and snacks started filling supermarket aisles the day after Christmas?!? I wanted to scream ‘At least let me have 12 days of Christmas!’ But no, there is absolutely no time …
Chinese New Year is here again! This year, due to my filming and traveling schedule, I haven’t been able to make as many treats for CNY. But I did manage to make a few kueh lapis (thousand-layer cake), some bak kwa (Asian-style pork jerky), bak kwa cookies, cornflake cookies and pineapple tarts. And…. I also made my first instructional cooking video …
There’s something controversial about savoury muffins… either you like them, or you don’t. For the purists, muffins are meant to be sweet, fruity, sugary and all the things you associate that over-the-top breakfast/mid-day muffin with. My hubby is one of those. To him, chicken, cheese, and vegetables are meant to go into a casserole … Continue reading
Can you believe it? Christmas is almost here again! Yet another year has whizzed by and before I can catch my breath, it’s the first week of November already. When I was living in Vancouver a couple years back, one of the jobs I held was a catering one. Several times a week, I had to feed the faculty at Regent College where my husband was doing his Masters degree. Having to cook lunch and make tea for the same bunch of professors meant that I had … Continue reading
It’s been a while since I posted my last recipe here and you might (or might not) have been puzzled at my sudden silence. Well, lots has happened since then and by lots I mean major life-changing stuff. For one, we had a baby and transformed overnight into sleep-deprived, junk-eating, google-everything parents. It’s true when … Continue reading
Let’s talk about fats. Relax, I’m not referring to the kind stuck around your waist but the ones we use for cooking. Not all fats are created equal and butter is one of those that has come in and out of fashion in the last few decades. Made from animal fat, butter was ditched in … Continue reading
It’s been a while since I made a cheesecake. But I recently made some for a friend’s wedding party and it had me wondering why I don’t make it more often! Cheesecakes are easy – crush biscuits to form the crust, then mix everything together and pour it into the pan – and they’re also delicious. … Continue reading
What do soft fluffy bunnies, multi-coloured eggs, and decadent chocolate have to do with Easter and the resurrection of Jesus? To be honest, I don’t really know! I guess it’s like how Santa Claus has pretty little to do with Christ’s birth during Christmas. Hot cross buns, on the other hand, are traditionally eaten on Good … Continue reading
