I haven’t had a chance yet to see Washington’s new and acclaimed National Museum of African American History and Culture. Tickets are hard to come by! In the meantime, I’ve been doing some reading to prepare for a visit in the near future. These books of historical fiction succeed in making the unimaginable all too real.
Women have always been a part of comics, whether portrayed simply as superheroes, spies, damsels, villains, temptresses, scantily-clad distractions, or merely one-dimensional characters. The following brief (and certainly not comprehensive) list contains more recent titles and women characters who cannot be confined to one-dimensional comic tropes, but more diverse and complicated women of our modern age.

I've always been a big art fan, so I love when I come across a children's novel that incorporates artwork, artists, or museums in one way or another. The following titles have so much to offer - in addition to their gripping storylines, these books introduce readers to various artists, specific paintings, and styles and movements throughout art history. I hope this list will encourage you to learn even more about the topic at hand, and perhaps inspire future trips to museums near and far!
There are few supernatural characters that I cannot resist when I peruse new fantasy titles. One is vampires, and the other is dragons! I love stories with dragons and wish dragons were real, so it is incredibly hard to pick favorite stories. However, here are some particular favorites, some classic, some new, and one with tacos (because everyone loves tacos)!
Welcome to the new food revolution, now in graphic format! Food and cooking are as popular as ever, and now there are many more books that tap into this passion, including graphic novels and comic cookbooks! The following are some great titles and series that will make your mouth water.
Like many residents in the Washington DC metro area, I take the commuter train line almost every day to work from my home in Baltimore. There is something rhythmically relaxing about boarding a train and listening to the sound of the rail cars as you depart from the station. You can read, sleep, meditate or work on your computer all without the stress of driving in rush hour mayhem. It’s a different experience. You see and witness things from a perspective that you would otherwise miss by driving.
Apples, pumpkins, colorful leaves… There are so many great things that come along with autumn! Even though it may not feel like it outside quite yet, fall is right around the corner. After such a hot summer, I know I’m looking forward to that crisp, cool air that starts to blow in late September. How about you?
Get ready and excited for one of the best seasons of all with these fall-tastic picture books!
