About 10 years ago, in November 2006, Al Jazeera English was launched. To mark that anniversary, we've created REWIND, which updates some of the channel's most memorable and award-winning documentaries of the past decade. We find out what happened to some of the characters in those films and ask how the stories have developed in the years since our cameras left.
In 2011, the worst drought in 60 years threw some 13 million people across the Horn of Africa into crisis. In Somalia, ravaged by two decades of conflict, the consequences were disastrous. Hundreds of thousands starved to death, many of them children.
In the midst of this human catastrophe Fault Lines travelled to Mogadishu to meet refugees who had fled to the most war-ravaged city in the world to escape an even worse fate, and the aid and medical workers struggling to help them.
Fault Lines sought to discover whether aid in this region had become politicised and whether Washington's preoccupation with "terrorism" in the Horn of Africa had contributed to the deadly consequences of this disaster.
Nisar Majid, a food security expert and co-author of Famine in Somalia, talks to REWIND about the fallout of the famine and the current situation in Somalia. As aid agencies are warning that five million people in Somalia are again facing acute food shortages due to drought, have lessons been learned?
"The situation remains extremely complicated. You still have al-Shabab controlling large parts of southern Somalia and you still have an atmosphere, a difficult operating environment where counterterrorism legislation and the threat of legal action is in place. And where there's a very kind of risk-averse international community who are worried about legal threats, reputational threats by their resources being diverted into the wrong hands ... The situation remains very complicated and the political issues always take precedence in the end and it depends on how those dynamics play out."

Somalia (/səˈmɑːliə, soʊ-, -ljə/so-MAH-lee-ə; Somali: Soomaaliya; Arabic: الصومال aṣ-Ṣūmāl), officially the Federal Republic of Somalia (Somali: Jamhuuriyadda Federaalka Soomaaliya, Arabic: جمهورية الصومال الفدرالية Jumhūrīyat aṣ-Ṣūmāl al-Fidirālīyah), is a country located in the Horn of Africa. It is bordered by Ethiopia to the west, Djibouti to the northwest, the Gulf of Aden to the north, the Indian Ocean to the east, and Kenya to the southwest. Somalia has the longest coastline on the continent's mainland, and its terrain consists mainly of plateaus, plains and highlands. Climatically, hot conditions prevail year-round, with periodic monsoon winds and irregular rainfall.
Somalia has a population of around 10.8 million. Around 85% of its residents are ethnic Somalis, who have historically inhabited the northern part of the country. Ethnic minorities are largely concentrated in the southern regions. The official languages of Somalia are Somali and Arabic, both of which belong to the Afroasiatic family. Most people in the country are Muslim, with the majority being Sunni.

About 10 years ago, in November 2006, Al Jazeera English was launched. To mark that anniversary, we've created REWIND, which updates some of the channel's most memorable and award-winning documentaries of the past decade. We find out what happened to some of the characters in those films and ask how the stories have developed in the years since our cameras left.
In 2011, the worst drought in 60 years threw some 13 million people across the Horn of Africa into crisis. In Somalia, ravaged by two decades of conflict, the consequences were disastrous. Hundreds of thousands starved to death, many of them children.
In the midst of this human catastrophe Fault Lines travelled to Mogadishu to meet refugees who had fled to the most war-ravaged city in the world to escape an even worse fate, and the aid and medical workers struggling to help them.
Fault Lines sought to discover whether aid in this region had become politicised and whether Washington's preoccupation with "terrorism" in the Horn of Africa had contributed to the deadly consequences of this disaster.
Nisar Majid, a food security expert and co-author of Famine in Somalia, talks to REWIND about the fallout of the famine and the current situation in Somalia. As aid agencies are warning that five million people in Somalia are again facing acute food shortages due to drought, have lessons been learned?
"The situation remains extremely complicated. You still have al-Shabab controlling large parts of southern Somalia and you still have an atmosphere, a difficult operating environment where counterterrorism legislation and the threat of legal action is in place. And where there's a very kind of risk-averse international community who are worried about legal threats, reputational threats by their resources being diverted into the wrong hands ... The situation remains very complicated and the political issues always take precedence in the end and it depends on how those dynamics play out."

EU Funded initiative hailed for efforts to link Somali businesses to Middle East markets
March 19, 2014 Dubai, UAE, - Countries and companies in the Gulf region have been urged to invest in the Horn of Africa nation and contribute to its economic recovery.
Several dignitaries speaking at the opening of the Somali Producers' Conference & Exhibition 2014 (SOPEC), which opened in the United Arab Emirates commercial capital Dubai, on March 17 closing on March 19.
SOPEC is a unique industry-led event linking Somali businesses in farming, fisheries and livestock to international markets under the technical support of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization with funding from the European Union.
H.E. Abdul Rahman Saif Al Ghurair, Chairman, Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, presided over the first-of-its-kind event held at Dubai's World Trade Center.
Somalia's Minister for Trade and Industry, Adan Mohamed Nur, hailed the event as unique and pioneering and pledged his government's support.
"The Somali government is ready to do everything to promote our producers in order to link them to markets like in the UAE and other countries and I would like to thank FAO and the EU for this effort," said Adan. Several ministers from the Somali government also attended the event.
The European Union Ambassador to Somalia, Michele Cervone d'Urso said that the event, which was attended by crowds of business people, government representatives and producers, highlighted changing times in Somalia.
"Let a strong message come out of this conference that change in Somalia is coming and will transcend political and security challenges. So let's make this conference a turning point in helping Somalia re-establish itself as Africa's foremost economic and business engine," said Ambassador Michele.
FAO Somalia, under its commercialisation concept of agro-economic development and value addition, designed the programme aimed at rekindling Somalia's trade links with the Middle East. Somalia exports 4.7 million heads of livestock to Gulf states in a trade boom that has grown since 2009 when Saudi Arabia lifted a 9-year disease related ban.
In a key success story for Somali agriculture earlier this month, farmers supported by FAO and EU supplied food assistance to the World Food Programme for the first time. In the fisheries sector, following the decline of pirate attacks thanks to international naval forces operations, fishermen and markets are ready to start tapping into their under-utilised fishing resources, with the help of FAO, to avoid unsustainable practices and overexploitation.
Luca Alinovi, FAO's head of office in Somalia said that the exhibition brings to light a crucial debate about the role of the Somali economy in the peace process.
"This element has been missing for quite some time in the economic foundation of the country and Somalia's policy and development debate. The country's entrepreneurial capacity is and will remain a critical inroad in the peace process and the country's future," said Alinovi.
The event that closed on Tuesday, recommended a continuation to such efforts by the private sector, Somali, UAE and other GCC governments to enhance and grow the three productive sectors and removal of trade impeding barriers to facilitate free movement of goods and people.
At SOPEC, participants had an unmatched two-day perspective on the industry as it is now and its future possibilities. This platform is offering participants an exhibition of Somali products from all sectors and an opportunity to meet and discuss industry specific issues, and network with a broad group of participants in a world-class event. The event is also bringing to the spotlight a number of constraints to be solved in order for the businesses to be more success and investments less risky.
Somali producers of agriculture, fishery and livestock were once Africa's best and most competitive economic drivers leading in the trade and substantive export of millions of livestock, hundreds of thousands of tons of banana, seafood and sesame export. However, the late 80s and early 90s civil strife and subsequent collapse of the central government weakened the export of livestock while the banana and seafood trade and export collapsed entirely

Through the support of ECHO, the SOS Hermann Gmeiner Community Nursing School in Mogadishu provides a three year diploma nursing course to Somali youth, thus playing a key part in building up the low health worker force currently present in Somalia. Since the school begun in 2002, a total of 161 nurses have graduated from the school.

The Northern Mali Conflict, Mali Civil War, or Mali War refers to armed conflicts that started from January 2012 between the northern and southern parts of Mali in Africa. On 16 January 2012, several insurgent groups began fighting a campaign against the Malian government for independence or greater autonomy for northern Mali, an area known as Azawad. The National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA), an organization fighting to make Azawad an independent homeland for the Tuareg people, had taken control of the region by April 2012.
Operation Barkhane is an ongoing anti-terrorist operation in Africa's Sahel region, which commenced 1 August 2014. It consists of a 3,000-strong French force, which will be permanent and headquartered in N’Djamena, the capital of Chad. The operation has been designed with five countries, and former French colonies, that span the Sahel: Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger. These countries are collectively referred to as the "G5 Sahel.

As you will see confirmed in this CNN report, the Pentagon said, "The incident occurred 40 miles west of Mogadishu near the town of Barii." You can listen to CNN's Pentagon correspondent state this information, or, read it here:

The geographical information given by the Pentagon seems to be incorrect. But that is the information given inthe official report by Africa Central Command. I restated the information because I acknowledged that it is possible that there is some smaller village 40 miles west of Mogadishu by the name "Barii" that I didn't see on the map. The report spells it with two i's in name of the town, which suggests it is a different town from the one in the north.
As it turns out, the town being spelled "Barii" by AFRICOM and the Pentagon, and which is repeated as "Barii" in all of the news links below, is actually the town of "Bariire". I have no idea as to why the various government and news outlets dropped the "re" off the end of the name of the town.
What I do know is that up north there is a town called "Bari" (with only one "i"), which is why I included a screenshot of that northern town.
I recognized that what the Pentagon told CNN might be in error, which is why I showed the screen shot of where "Bari" actually is located. Here are multiple sources that repeated the same information that I gave in my report:

The war in Afghanistan is the period in which the United States invaded the country after the September 11 attacks, supported initially by close allies, and eventually by the wider North Atlantic Treaty Organization, beginning in 2003. The conflict is also known as the U.S. war in Afghanistan. It followed the Afghan Civil War's 1996–2001 phase. Its public aims were to dismantle al-Qaeda, and to deny it a safe base of operations in Afghanistan by removing the Taliban from power. Key allies supported the U.S. from the start, including the United Kingdom. In August 2003, NATO became involved as an alliance, taking the helm of the International Security Assistance Force. On 28 December 2014, NATO formally ended combat operations in Afghanistan and transferred full security responsibility to the Afghan government, via a ceremony in Kabul.
U.S. President George W. Bush demanded that the Taliban hand over Osama bin Laden and expel al-Qaeda, bin Laden had already been wanted by the U.N. since 1999. The Taliban declined to extradite him unless given what they deemed convincing evidence of his involvement in the 9/11 attacks and ignored demands to shut down terrorist bases and hand over other terrorist suspects apart from bin Laden. The request was dismissed by the U.S. as a meaningless delaying tactic and it launched Operation Enduring Freedom on 7 October 2001 with the United Kingdom. The two were later joined by other forces, including the Northern Alliance. The U.S. and its allies drove the Taliban from power and built military bases near major cities across the country. Most al-Qaeda and Taliban were not captured, escaping to neighboring Pakistan or retreating to rural or remote mountainous regions.
In December 2001, the United Nations Security Council established the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), to assist the Afghan interim authorities with securing Kabul. At the Bonn Conference in December 2001, Hamid Karzai was selected to head the Afghan Interim Administration, which after a 2002 loya jirga in Kabul became the Afghan Transitional Administration. In the popular elections of 2004, Karzai was elected president of the country, now named the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
In 2003, NATO assumed leadership of ISAF, with troops from 43 countries. NATO members provided the core of the force. One portion of U.S. forces in Afghanistan operated under NATO command; the rest remained under direct U.S. command. Taliban leader Mullah Omar reorganized the movement, and in 2003, launched an insurgency against the government and ISAF.
Though vastly outgunned and outnumbered, the Taliban insurgents, most notably the Haqqani Network and Hezb-e-Islami Gulbuddin, have waged asymmetric warfare with guerilla raids and ambushes in the countryside, suicide attacks against urban targets and turncoat killings against coalition forces. The Taliban exploited weaknesses in the Afghan government, among the most corrupt in the world, to reassert influence across rural areas of southern and eastern Afghanistan. ISAF responded in 2006 by increasing troops for counterinsurgency operations to "clear and hold" villages and "nation building" projects to "win hearts and minds".
While ISAF continued to battle the Taliban insurgency, fighting crossed into neighboring North-West Pakistan. In 2004, the Pakistani Army began to clash with local tribes hosting al-Qaeda and Taliban militants. The US military launched drone attacks in Pakistan to kill insurgent leaders. The Taliban declined to extradite him unless given what they deemed convincing evidence of his involvement in the 9/11 attacks and ignored demands to shut down terrorist bases and hand over other terrorist suspects apart from bin Laden. The request was dismissed by the U.S. as a meaningless delaying tactic and it launched Operation Enduring Freedom on 7 October 2001 with the United Kingdom. The two were later joined by other forces, including the Northern Alliance. The U.S. and its allies drove the Taliban from power and built military bases near major cities across the country. Most al-Qaeda and Taliban were not captured, escaping to neighboring Pakistan or retreating to rural or remote mountainous regions.
In December 2001, the United Nations Security Council established the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), to assist the Afghan interim authorities with securing Kabul. At the Bonn Conference in December 2001, Hamid Karzai was selected to head the Afghan Interim Administration, which after a 2002 loya jirga in Kabul became the Afghan Transitional Administration. In the popular elections of 2004, Karzai was elected president of the country, now named the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
In 2003, NATO assumed leadership of ISAF, with troops from 43 countries. NATO members provided the core of the force. One portion of U.S. forces in Afghanistan operated under NATO command; the rest remained under direct U.S. command. Taliban leader Mullah Omar reorganized the movement, and in 2003, launched an insurgency against the government and ISAF.
Though vastly outgunned and outnumbered, the Taliban insurgents, most notably the Haqqani Network and Hezb-e-Islami Gulbuddin, have waged asymmetric warfare with guerilla raids and ambushes in the countryside, suicide attacks against urban targets and turncoat killings against coalition forces. The Taliban exploited weaknesses in the Afghan government, among the most corrupt in the world, to reassert influence across rural areas of southern and eastern Afghanistan. ISAF responded in 2006 by increasing troops for counterinsurgency operations to "clear and hold" villages and "nation building" projects to "win hearts and minds".
While ISAF continued to battle the Taliban insurgency, fighting crossed into neighboring North-West Pakistan. In 2004, the Pakistani Army began to clash with local tribes hosting al-Qaeda and Taliban militants. The US military launched drone attacks in Pakistan to kill insurgent leaders. This resulted in the start of an insurgency in Waziristan in 2007.

Alhamdulilaah I was lucky enough to go on holiday with my family to Somalia this year. It was so lovely to be back home, and to see my family and friends I haven't seen in over a decade!! When most people think of the country Somalia, they associate it with the only areas national media cover, pirates, extremist terrorism, famine and war. A self declared independent state of this country named Somaliland seemed to be different from the rest, the people were happy, it was safe to travel too and they seek peace following the 1988 Somali war. Somalia was country number 155/196 on my Expedition promoting Positive Peace through Sustainable Tourism. Please note that this experience was my own, and I think it's important to respect that we each have our own experiences when we travel and share that however we'd like to. I went into Somalia with an open mind and had a truly educational experience thanks to the Peace Hotel 1 and everyone who helped me out there, ensuring my safety while also making sure that I saw the true, raw and beautiful aspects of Mogadishu. Please spare all negative comments as they are not welcome in this community. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to experience Somalia and the truly kind people and I hope to go back again soon!
One thing I took away from this trip and the many I've been on, is that despite war and terrorism, the world, the people, aren't as bad as the media and politics depict. We're frightened by what we hear on the news, frightened. And I can't tell you how many people, even my world traveler friends, told me to stay away from Somalia. My experiences in war torn nations have been the most positively life changing ever, and although some might see it as being an incredible risk entering alone, I see it is as an incredibly opportunity. This is my life, I won't last forever, none of us will. So to me, this is how I want to live it. Despite war and hardships, finding the sacred and unmistakable beauty amongst the people and places, and sharing that beauty with the people I met within that country, and YOU, is what makes me feel alive.

Travelling should be more than packing bags, travelling long way to a 7star hotel and visiting some of most likely visited tourist destination. According to my idea of holiday, if you have a charged pocket, a desire to taste some adventure (or taste death) then you must visit Somalia. Somalia is on the Horn of Africa, and is bordered by Ethiopia to the west, Djibouti to the north-west, and Kenya on its south-west. On June 21, the US Federal Government has issued a Travel Warning for the country. Travel to Somalia is EXTREMELY NOT recommended as the conflict continues.
Somalia is noted as the world's unsafe travel destination and is one of the most dangerous places on Earth.
Somalia is home to the largest coastline in Africa, good hotel and food bargains and the beautiful mountains. In 2004, Somalia's minister of tourism claimed that the country hadn't had an officially-acknowledged tourist in 14 years. The problem? Civil war and fighting among warlords seeking to gain control of drug and weapons trafficking has left Somalia a burning wreck of what was once a beautiful country.
Since the civil war broke out in 1990, Somalia is divided into no less than two dozen warring groups. The proprietors of most of the Hotels may serve delicious lobster on the roof overlooking the sea, but they also advise that visitors hire at least 10 armed guards to get them from the airport to the hotel. The United States doesn't even operate an embassy in Somalia, so you're truly on your own. Terrorist attacks, cross-border warring and brutal, violent street crime wrack the country on a daily basis. So why would you want to visit Somalia? The answer probably would be adventure.
The Safety Tips:
1. Somalia is a Muslim country. As such, be sensitive about where you point your camera. There are many great photo opportunities around every corner (the question is usually what to leave out of each image), but when photographing people, always ask first. Don't ever try to take pictures of women, even if you're a woman yourself. This is considered a great offense and can even result in more than a few harsh words. Also don't try to take pictures of anything that looks as if it could be of any strategic importance.
2. Alcohol is prohibited in Somalia and possessing alcohol will get you into a lot of trouble - and never drink and drive.
3. Never discuss religion. Even highly-educated Somalis who studied abroad won't appreciate it and doors will close for you. Also be aware that the Islamic "call to prayer" happens five times daily and can be heard loudly almost anywhere you go. Just understand that most Somali people are used to it and enjoy it as part of the cultural experience. If you aren't Muslim, it is not expected for you to participate, but you should always sit quietly and respectfully until the prayers end.
4. Do Take care of your clothing as you are visiting a Muslim country.
As with any travel in a war zone, exercise extreme caution. And for a last pray for a safe landing back to your town.

So, after speaking to the company and arranging my trip, I booked my flights, armed myself with my camera and set out to discover the story of the people of Somaliland.
