The African Union (AU) is a continental union consisting of 54 countries in Africa. The only African state that is not a member is Morocco, due to the status of the Western Sahara, although Burkina Faso and the Central African Republic have had their memberships suspended due to the recent coup d'état and ongoing civil war, respectively. The AU was established on 26 May 2001 in Addis Ababa and launched on 9 July 2002 in South Africa, with the aim of replacing the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). The most important decisions of the AU are made by the Assembly of the African Union, a semi-annual meeting of the heads of state and government of its member states. The AU's secretariat, the African Union Commission, is based in Addis Ababa.
The objectives of the AU are:
The ethnic groups of Africa number in the thousands, each generally having its own language (or dialect of a language) and culture. The ethnolinguistic groups include various Afro-Asiatic, Indo-European, Khoisan, Niger-Congo and Nilo-Saharan populations.
The official population count of the various ethnic groups in Africa has in some instances been controversial because certain groups believe populations are fixed to give other ethnicities numerical superiority (as in the case of Nigeria's Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba and Igbo people). The following ethnic groups number 10 million people or more:
Union is the state of being united or joined.

Hearts of Iron is a grand strategy computer game developed by Paradox Development Studio and published by Strategy First, set in the years 1936-1948. In the game players can control any one nation as World War II unfolds. It was released for Windows-compatible PCs in 2002. A Macintosh version was also released by Virtual Programming. The lead game programmer was Johan Andersson.
Hearts of Iron is based on Paradox's successful Europa Universalis game engine, but has many changes:
Addis Ababa (Amharic: አዲስ አበባ?Addis Abäba, IPA: [adˈdis ˈabəba], “new flower”; Oromo: Finfinne,[fɪnˈfɪ́n.nɛ́] "Natural Spring(s)"), sometimes spelled Addis Abeba (the spelling used by the official Ethiopian Mapping Authority), is the capital city of Ethiopia. Founded in 1886, it is the largest city in Ethiopia, with a population of 3,384,569 according to the 2007 population census with annual growth rate of 3.8%. This number has been increased from the originally published 2,738,248 figure and appears to be still largely underestimated.
As a chartered city (ras gez astedader), Addis Ababa has the status of both a city and a state. It is where the African Union is and its predecessor the OAU was based. It also hosts the headquarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and numerous other continental and international organizations. Addis Ababa is therefore often referred to as "the political capital of Africa" due to its historical, diplomatic and political significance for the continent.

Based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the main goals of the African Union are to promote the unity and solidarity of African states; ensure their sovereignty and territorial integrity; rid the continent of colonialism and apartheid and promote international cooperation with the United Nations through a unified voice of common political, social and economic policies. Although the African continent has suffered through an incredibly turbulent and violent past, the African Union is emerging as a promising platform to tackle the many issues that face the rapidly gro...
The creation of the African Union began with a wave of optimism about Africa's future. In 1963 a group of independent African nations created the Organisation of African Unity - which later became the African Union. Its promise was to bring Africans together and propel the continent towards peaceful coexistence and growth. The orgnaisation now says peace and security have become more worrying than ever. And it's working to address the issue. But the focus of this year's meeting are Africa's young people and their future. But conflicts in South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Central African Republic are dominating the agenda. Millions continue to flee from violence and natural disasters across the continent. Poverty, the outbreak of disease and food shortages are all bi...

"A continent of different shapes and contradictions." Those were the sentiments of the newly elected Moussa Faki Mahamat as he accepted the responsibility of the African Union Commission chair. But as the former Chadian foreign minister takes up the position, he is charged with not only leading a continental body that faces imminent reform, but also with steering the AU through a larger global change as major economies seem to be turning away from globalization in favor of their own private interests. So what kind of reforms can be expected following last month’s annual summit? And what kind of leadership will be required for the African Union in a new era?

Sudan said on Thursday it would continue bilateral cooperation with the United States, including on intelligence-sharing, despite Khartoum's decision to halt the work of a committee formed to negotiate relief from U.S. sanctions. Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on Wednesday froze the work of the committee, which was formed with the United States, after Washington postponed for three months a decision on whether to permanently lift sanctions against Sudan. They were imposed partly over concern about human rights. It's a $200 million building, the tallest in the Ethiopian capital and the new headquarters of the African Union. It also happens to be entirely the work of China. Paid for with Chinese money and constructed by Chinese workers, the AU's new home in Addis Ababa is concrete evidence of Beijing's desire to increase its influence in Africa. Though some analysts say AU nations will still need and work closely with Europe and the United States, Chinese delegates are the ones being feted at the moment in Ethiopia. While the Libyan slave lords are buying African youths for a price as low as 50 cents, they slay them as sacrifices to their gods and goddesses. They also use them for forced labor in wheat plantations, and sex idols in secret dungeons. In spite of this grave social mess, the worst human rights abuse of our time, the African Union and the United Nation close their eyes and ears. These youths leave their countries on migration to Europe, for green pastures but end up in chaotic and lawless Libya. The lucky ones serve their slave masters--the Sultans-- washing their floors and cleaning their homes. No one dare violate the orders of the slave lords since any disobedience is visited with being chained and food denial for weeks. Who is to blame for this human right abuse the African young ...

Each week on “The Global African” host Bill Fletcher, Jr. addresses issues facing Africa and the African Diasporas. Fletcher discusses these and other issues with Pan-Africanist advocate Dr. Gnaka Lagoke and Dr. Zachariah Mampilly, director of Africana studies at Vassar College. teleSUR http://multimedia.telesurtv.net/web/telesur/#!en/video/the-global-african-296983
