The number of people who are economically inactive because of parenting has hit a record low in Korea.
The trend is being driven by the chronically low birthrate and the sputtering economy, which is prompting more women to keep working... despite having kids at home.
Oh Jung-hee reports.
The number of people who are economically inactive due to parenting hit a record low as of June this year.
According to the data from Statistics Korea,... those who were economically inactive due to childcare took up only 7-point-8 percent of whole economically inactive population.
That's the LOWEST since the data records began in June 1999.
In 2000, the figure stood at around 12-percent... but it dropped to the 10-percent range in 2003... and dipped further to the 9-percent range in 2010.
In 2014, the number fell below 9-percent,... and now, the figure stands at just 7-point-8 percent.
This is considered a possible outcome of increased economic activity by women.
The employment rate of women topped 51-percent last month,... a RECORD HIGH for the last ten years.
The figure previously hovered in the 48 to 50 percent range.
"The number of women economically inactive due to childcare is decreasing. And that's mainly because women are participating more and more in the labor market. Also, the country's birth rate has been low for quite a long time."
On the other hand, more men are becoming open to taking leave for childcare.
The number of men on paternity leave increased by 52-percent from last year... hitting 5-thousand-1-hundred for the first half of this year.
It's a big rise,... but the figure's only a little over 11-percent of the total number of men and women on childcare leave.
"The rising trend of course implies an improvement in our society, but conditions will have to improve further so that men could take paternity leave without feeling a burden, and more companies could allow paternity leave. "
In creating an environment where both men and women could pursue work and family care,... there're still lots to be done on a societal level.
"To lessen the burden of childcare and enable an easier 'work/life balance,' infrastructure like childcare centers within workplaces is further needed,... while the government needs to continue offering incentives for parents to raise children. Oh Jung-hee, Arirang News."

Lately, more and more parents in Korea are choosing to stay economically active while they raise their kids.
A recent survey shows... growing number of mothers are opting to keep working rather than be stay-at-home moms as the job market remains gloomy.
Oh Jung-hee tells us more.
Korea's frozen labor market is leading more and more of its population to choose work over parenting.
The number of those who are economically inactive due to parenting hit a record low as of June this year.
According to the data from Statistics Korea,... out of 15-point-8 million people classed as economically inactive, 1-point-2 million were inactive because of childcare.
That amounts to 7-point-8 percent,... the LOWEST since the data records began in June 1999.
In other words,... more and more people are choosing to be economically ACTIVE rather than INACTIVE due to childcare.
The percentage of people economically inactive due to parenting has been steadily falling over recent years.

GMA News and Public Affairs
GMA News and Public Affairs (commonly GMA News; formerly RBS News Department, GMA Radio-Television News and GMA Rainbow Satellite News) is the news and public affairs programming division of the media conglomerate, GMA Network Inc.
It produces news, public affairs, infotainment, and lately, entertainment programs for all GMA Network and GMA News TV owned and affiliated television and radio stations in the Philippines, and internationally through GMA Pinoy TV, GMA Life TV and GMA News TV International. GMA News and Public Affairs is currently headed by Marissa Flores. It is headquartered at the Ground Floor of GMA Network Center in Quezon City.
History
News division
The GMA News division traces its origin from the Republic Broadcasting System, established by Robert Stewart in 1959. Programming of its radio station, DZBB depended on mostly news reports. The station covered the eruption of Mt. Hibok-Hibok in 1951 and the election and death of the Former President Ramon Magsaysay. While RBS Channel 7 was established in 1961, it was in the 1970s that GMA became one of the most-watched television news source in the country. In 1983, Channel 7 was the first to break the news of Ninoy Aquino's death and later would be the only television station to broadcast his funeral. The channel also became the first station to broadcast the Ramos-Enrile break-away that led to the People Power Revolution (otherwise known as EDSA Revolution).

Arirang (TV network)
Arirang TV (Korean: 아리랑 TV; Arirang tibui) is an international English-language network based in Seoul, South Korea operated by the Korea International Broadcasting Foundation. The channel presents programs (including cultural features, documentaries and language programs) designed to give viewers a contemporary, accurate look at Korea, Asia and the world. The network's name, "Arirang", is derived from the traditional Korean folk song of the same name. Programming is available on the Arirang website, on YouTube, and on some TV providers.
The channel receives government subsidies; in 2011 these amounted to 30 billion won.
A related production, Arirang Radio, also broadcasts English-language content internationally.
Programming
Founded in 1996, the network airs news, cultural programs, educational shows and documentaries.
Among the network's longest-running shows is Arirang News, Showbiz Korea, Pops in Seoul and Heart to Heart. Arirang News is a current-affairs show providing coverage of domestic and international news. From Diplomacy Lounge and the talk show Heart to Heart seeing the country through the eyes of foreign diplomats and visiting international newsmakers. Although government-affiliated, Arirang retains independent-programming rights. The network airs programming about other countries, for culturally-diverse content; this includes culinary shows about global cuisines and public-service announcements in conjunction with UNICEF to combat world hunger.

Oh Jung-Hee (born November 9, 1947) (Hangul: 오정희) is a South Korean writer.
Life
Oh Jung-Hee (Also romanized as O chonghui, O Chong-hui) was born in Seoul on November 9, 1947. She attended the Sorabol Art College from which she received her B.A. in Creative Writing in 1968. Oh made her initial literary impact while in her final year of college as she was awarded the Chungang Ilbo annual award for aspiring writers. This work was even more remarkable as Oh began to write it while she was still in high school. The story was “The Toyshop Woman,” a dark story about a high-school girl, who is emotionally abandoned by her parents and whose disabled brother dies. This sets her on a path of madness which is paved by kleptomania and sexual obsession. This was a groundbreaking work. As Oh matured as a writer, her work became increasingly non-imagistic and centered on family life as something like a trap for women. From 1990 on, Hui has published only sporadically, including one work of children’s fiction, Song-I, It's Morning Outside the Door.

The number of people who are economically inactive because of parenting has hit a record low in Korea.
The trend is being driven by the chronically low birthrate and the sputtering economy, which is prompting more women to keep working... despite having kids at home.
Oh Jung-hee reports.
The number of people who are economically inactive due to parenting hit a record low as of June this year.
According to the data from Statistics Korea,... those who were economically inactive due to childcare took up only 7-point-8 percent of whole economically inactive population.
That's the LOWEST since the data records began in June 1999.
In 2000, the figure stood at around 12-percent... but it dropped to the 10-percent range in 2003... and dipped further to the 9-percent range in 2010.
In 2014, the number fell below 9-percent,... and now, the figure stands at just 7-point-8 percent.
This is considered a possible outcome of increased economic activity by women.
The employment rate of women topped 51-percent last month,... a RECORD HIGH for the last ten years.
The figure previously hovered in the 48 to 50 percent range.
"The number of women economically inactive due to childcare is decreasing. And that's mainly because women are participating more and more in the labor market. Also, the country's birth rate has been low for quite a long time."
On the other hand, more men are becoming open to taking leave for childcare.
The number of men on paternity leave increased by 52-percent from last year... hitting 5-thousand-1-hundred for the first half of this year.
It's a big rise,... but the figure's only a little over 11-percent of the total number of men and women on childcare leave.
"The rising trend of course implies an improvement in our society, but conditions will have to improve further so that men could take paternity leave without feeling a burden, and more companies could allow paternity leave. "
In creating an environment where both men and women could pursue work and family care,... there're still lots to be done on a societal level.
"To lessen the burden of childcare and enable an easier 'work/life balance,' infrastructure like childcare centers within workplaces is further needed,... while the government needs to continue offering incentives for parents to raise children. Oh Jung-hee, Arirang News."

Korea's frozen labor market is leading more and more of its population to choose work over parenting.
The number of those who are economically inactive due to parenting hit a record low as of June this year.
According to the data from Statistics Korea,... out of 15-point-8 million people classed as economically inactive, 1-point-2 million were inactive because of childcare.
That amounts to 7-point-8 percent,... the LOWEST since the data records began in June 1999.
In other words,... more and more people are choosing to be economically ACTIVE rather than INACTIVE due to childcare.
The percentage of people economically inactive due to parenting has been steadily falling over recent years.
In 2000, the figure stood at around 12-percent... but it dropped to the 10-percent range in 2003... and dipped further to the 9-percent range in 2010.
In 2014, the number fell below 9-percent,... and now, the figure stands at just 7-point-8 percent.

Lately, more and more parents in Korea are choosing to stay economically active while they raise their kids.
A recent survey shows... growing number of mothers are opting to keep working rather than be stay-at-home moms as the job market remains gloomy.
Oh Jung-hee tells us more.
Korea's frozen labor market is leading more and more of its population to choose work over parenting.
The number of those who are economically inactive due to parenting hit a record low as of June this year.
According to the data from Statistics Korea,... out of 15-point-8 million people classed as economically inactive, 1-point-2 million were inactive because of childcare.
That amounts to 7-point-8 percent,... the LOWEST since the data records began in June 1999.
In other words,... more and more people are choosing to be economically ACTIVE rather than INACTIVE due to childcare.
The percentage of people economically inactive due to parenting has been steadily falling over recent years.
In 2000, the figure stood at around 12-percent... but it dropped to the 10-percent range in 2003... and dipped further to the 9-percent range in 2010.
In 2014, the number fell below 9-percent,... and now, the figure stands at just 7-point-8 percent.
