My recent foodie mission has been to peruse the best brunches and find the absolute best location for a Bloody Mary infused brunch that makes you want to take that Sunday Funday bull by the horns and ride it into Monday morning. On second thought, a brunch so good that you cancel your Monday morning plans. Or maybe a brunch that puts you in the right mood to curl back into Sunday afternoon bed and ponder philosophical questions unfitting of any other day of the week. I just want a great bunch locale, okay?
I thought Parks and Rec might be it so I gathered my Sunday gang with me to see what this place is all about. My gang this day happened to include my two toddler daughters and my husband. I kid you not, upon our arrival the hipsters of P&R saw a three headed monster and looked incredibly astonished that a family just entered the building. That might be taking it a bit too far, but in all reality, it's like they've never serviced, let alone seen, a family before.
We were seated and waited for our waiter.... who never showed. I'm guessing the kids scared a few staff and guests away. I asked why another table was being serviced before us when they were seated quite a bit after us and we finally got a waitress. She told us something about us not being her table but picking up for another day waiter. (See prior theory).
We ordered and our food and drinks came out. The Bloody Mary was ok. A bit heavy on the ice and light on the garnishments but it was helpful getting us through this awkward brunch in a tight space with two tiny tornadoes.
Food eventually arrived and life was good. But not necessarily great. By the time food arrived, we wanted to high tail it out of there so the meal was not consumed by eager and excited patrons. Instead, we quickly rushed through our food to rush away from the inconvenience we clearly caused to everyone including other patrons. The Saturday cartoons pancake was too sweet, don't even try it. Not even with a screaming child. I had a decent meal that prepped me for the rest of family fun day but not one I would want to repeat again next week nor one that cast away Monday blues. The food was decent. The steak and egg benny was good... super homemade and crafty enough to be interesting yet comforting the way breakfast should be. But the vibe was off. Too off to enjoy life on a blissful Sunday. If I was a young, no kid millennial, I would be back for the food. It's creative, delicious, and crafted in a way that could be great if it wasn't so hip.
I'm still looking Metro Detroit. I have faith that there's a venue with the perfect Bloody Mary, brunch menu, kid friendly yet adult vibe that can carry me into next week on a Sunday unicorn.
