<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Hello everyone! We are happy to let you know that update 1612 for the Technical Preview Branch of System Center Configuration Manager has been released. Technical Preview Branch releases give you an opportunity to try out new Configuration Manager features in a test environment before they are made generally available. This months new preview features include:</p> <ul> <li><strong>Azure Active Directory onboarding</strong> Creates a connection between Configuration Manager and Azure AD to be used by other cloud services, such as the Cloud Management Gateway.</li> <li><strong>Windows Hello for Business toast notification </strong>– A new Windows 10 toast notification added to let end users know that they need to take additional actions to complete Windows Hello for Business PIN setup.</li> <li><strong>Enhancement for online-licensed apps from the Windows Store for Business </strong> You can now deploy online-licensed apps with a deployment purpose of Available to Windows 10 PCs managed with the Configuration Manager client.</li> <li><strong>Express files support for Windows 10 Cumulative Update </strong> Configuration Manager can now support Windows 10 Cumulative Update using Express files.</li> <li><b><strong>Ability to block installation of an application if specified executables are running </strong>– </b>You can now configure a list of executable files (with the extension .exe) in Deployment Type Properties which, if running, will block installation of an application. After installation is attempted, a user will see a dialog box asking them to close the processes that are blocking installation, and then try again.</li> <li><strong>Ability to retry task sequence </strong> If the task sequence doesnt launch in the task sequence wizard, because policy or a task sequence dependency is not found, you can now click Previous to retry the task sequence.</li> <li><strong>OData endpoint data access </strong> Configuration Manager now provides a RESTful OData endpoint for accessing Configuration Manager data. The endpoint is compatible with OData version 4, which enables tools such as Excel and Power BI to easily access Configuration Manager data through a single endpoint. Update 1612 for the Technical Preview Branch supports read-only access to objects in Configuration Manager.</li> <li><strong>Data Warehouse for historical reporting </strong> The Data Warehouse enhances reporting for Configuration Manager by storing long-term data for historic reporting. This enables you to look at compliance, application deployment, and more, with reports that show trends over a period of time.</li> </ul> <p>This release also includes the following changes for customers using System Center Configuration Manager connected with Microsoft Intune to manage mobile devices:</p> <ul> <li><strong>Multi-Factor Authentication for enrollment moved to the Azure portal </strong>– Now that you can set up multi-factor authentication (MFA) for device enrollment in the Azure portal, the MFA option has been removed in the Configuration Manager console. You can find more information on setting up MFA for enrollment here: <a href="https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/intune/deploy-use/multi-factor-authentication-azure-active-directory"><u>https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/intune/deploy-use/multi-factor-authentication-azure-active-directory</u></a>.</li> </ul> <p>Update 1612 for Technical Preview Branch is available in the Configuration Manager console. We are delighted to announce that we have released version 1610 for the Current Branch (CB) of System Center Configuration Manager that includes some great new features and product enhancements.</p> <p>We continue to see a strong adoption of the Current Branch model by our customers. There are now more than 25,000 organizations managing more than 50 million devices with Configuration Manager version 1511 or later. Even though this is a significant milestone, we expect many more customers to upgrade to the Current Branch of Configuration Manager in the coming months, so the quality of the product continues to be a top priority for us.</p> <p>Thanks to our active <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-system-center-configuration-manager-and-endpoint-protection-technical-preview"><u>Technical Preview Branch</u></a> community, the 1610 update includes feedback and usage data we have gathered from customers who have installed and road tested our monthly technical previews over the last few months. As always, 1610 has also been tested at scale by real customers, in real production environments. As of today, nearly 1 million devices are being managed by the version 1610 of Configuration Manager.</p> <p>1610 includes lots of new features and enhancements in Windows 10 and Office 365 management, application management, end user experience, client management and also includes new functionality for customers using Configuration Manager in hybrid mode with <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/cloud-platform/microsoft-intune"><u>Microsoft Intune</u></a>. Here are just few of the enhancements that are available in this update:</p> <ul> <li><strong>Windows 10 <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/WindowsForBusiness/upgrade-analytics"><u>Upgrade Analytics</u></a> </strong>integration allows you to assess and analyze device readiness and compatibility with Windows 10 to allow smoother upgrades.</li> <li><strong>Office 365 Servicing Dashboard and app deployment to clients features </strong>help you to deploy Office 365 apps to clients as well as track Office 365 usage and update deployments.</li> <li><strong>Software Updates Compliance Dashboard</strong> allows you to view the current compliance status of devices in your organization and quickly analyze the data to see which devices are at risk.</li> <li><strong>Cloud Management Gateway </strong>provides a simpler way to manageConfiguration Manager clients on the Internet. You can use theConfigMgr console to deploy the service in Microsoft Azure and configure the supported roles to allow cloud management gateway traffic.</li> <li><strong>Client Peer Cache </strong>is a new built-in solution in Configuration Manager that allows clients to share content with other clients directly from their local cache with monitoring and troubleshooting capabilities.</li> <li><strong>Enhancements in Software Center </strong>including customizable branding in more dialogs, notifications of new software, improvements to the notification experience for high-impact task sequence deployments, and ability for users to request applications and view request history directly in Software Center.</li> <li><strong>New remote control features</strong> including performance optimization for remote control sessions and keyboard translation.</li> </ul> <p>This release also includes new features for customers using Configuration Manager connected with Microsoft Intune. Some of the new feature include:</p> <ul> <li><strong>New configuration item settings and improvements </strong>now only show settings that apply to the selected platform. We also added lots of new settings for Android (23), iOS (4), Mac (4), Windows 10 desktop and mobile (37), Windows 10 Team (7), Windows 8.1 (11), and Windows Phone 8.1 (3).</li> <li><strong>Lookout integration </strong>allows to check devices compliance status based on its compliance with Lookout rules.</li> <li><strong>Request a sync from the admin console </strong>improvement allows you to request a policy sync on an enrolled mobile device from the Configuration Manager console.</li> <li><strong>Support for paid apps in Windows Store for Business</strong> allows you to add and deploy online-licensed paid apps in addition to the free apps in Windows Store for Business.</li> </ul> <p>For more details and to view the full list of new features in this update check out our <a href="http://docs.microsoft.com/sccm/core/plan-design/changes/whats-new-in-version-1610"><u>Whats new in version 1610 of System Center Configuration Manager</u></a> documentation.</p> <p><strong><span style="color: #ff0000">Updated 12/9/2016</span> Note:</strong> The update is now globally available to all customers. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Hello everyone! Update 1610 for the Technical Preview Branch of System Center Configuration Manager has been released. Technical Preview releases give you an opportunity to try out new Configuration Manager features in a test environment before they are made generally available. This month’s new preview features include:</p> <ul> <li><strong>Improvements to the notification experience for high-impact task sequence and required application deployments </strong>– Task sequence deployments that have a high-impact to the end user,such asoperating system deployments for example, now display more intrusive notifications. However, end users can dismiss (snooze) these notifications, and control when they reappear. Any relevant client settings for notification frequency are still honored.</li> <li><strong>Deny previously approved application requests</strong> – As an administrator, you can deny a previously approved application request. This prevents new installations of the applicationTo install this application later, users must resubmit a request. If the application was previously installed, it will not be uninstalled.</li> <li><strong>Filter by content size in automatic deployment rules</strong> – Use the content size filter in automatic deployment rules to prevent large software updates from automatically downloading to better support simplified Windows down-level servicing when network bandwidth is limited.</li> <li><strong>Exclude clients from automatic upgrade</strong> – When you configure settings to control how clients automatically upgrade, you can now specify a collection to exclude specific clients from the upgrade. This applies to automatic upgrade as well as other methods such as software update-based upgrade. This can be used for a collection of computers that need greater care when upgrading the client.</li> </ul> <p>This release also includes the following new features for customers using System Center Configuration Manager connected with Microsoft Intune to manage mobile devices:</p> <ul> <li><strong>Request a policy sync from the admin console </strong>–<strong> </strong><span>You can request a policy sync on an enrolled mobile device from the Configuration Manager console, instead of needing to request the sync in the Company Portal app on the device itself. This is a new action called </span><strong><span>Send Sync Request</span></strong><span> in the </span><strong><span>Remote Device Actions</span></strong><span> menu, which appears in the ribbon when a mobile device is selected in the </span><strong><span>Devices</span></strong><span> node.</span></li> <li><span><strong>Windows Defender Configuration Settings</strong> – </span><span>You can now configure Windows Defender client settings on Intune-enrolled Windows 10 computers using configuration items in the Configuration Manager console. Theres a new setting group called </span><strong><span>Windows Defender</span></strong><span> in the Configuration Item wizard. Note that this is supported only on Windows 10 November Update (1511) and above.</span></li> </ul> <p>Update 1610 for Technical Preview Branch is available in the Configuration Manager console. In addition, we updated the baseline version of Configuration Manager Technical Preview branch <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/evaluate-system-center-configuration-manager-and-endpoint-protection-technical-preview"><u>available on TechNet Evaluation Center</u></a>. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Today, 101 years ago, the Ford Motor Company manufactured its 1 millionth <a target="_blank" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Model_T">Model T</a> automobile. Thanks to our customers, we also have a reason to celebrate today as we are continuing to see an incredible adoption of our own model, the current branch of Configuration Manager. Our current branch model was designed to provide our customers with ongoing product improvements, faster updates, and timely support for new Windows releases.</p> <p>Since <a target="_blank" href="https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/enterprisemobility/2015/12/08/now-generally-available-system-center-configuration-manager-and-endpoint-protection-version-1511/">the release of the current branch</a> in December of 2015, over 21,000 organizations managing more than 43 million devices have transformed client management for their organizations by upgrading to Configuration Manager 1511 or later, allowing them to keep their management tools up to date at an unprecedented rate and scale. With three current branch releases to date, the move to later versions is accelerating: more than half of these organizations have already updated to the latest version 1606. In the wake of this strong customer adoption, we are including the latest version of Configuration Manager in <a target="_blank" href="http://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/hybridcloud/2016/10/12/managing-the-software-defined-datacenter-with-system-center-2016/">newly released System Center 2016 </a>for server management, and at the same time we are introducing a new branch type.</p> <p>In short, System Center Configuration Manager (version 1606) is now included with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/cloud-platform/system-center">System Center 2016</a>. Our customers can now upgrade Configuration Manager 2012/R2 directly to version 1606 of the current branch and start taking advantage of new management features, faster and easier updates, support for new Windows releases, and more. For the overwhelming majority of our customers, the current branch of Configuration Manager will be their preferred installation option, and we have seen this further validated by the upgrade momentum we noted above.</p> <p>Today, we are also making available the Long-Term Servicing Branch (LTSB) of Configuration Manager. Up until this point, if Software Assurance or equivalent subscription rights (most normally from Intune or EMS) became expired, customers, per product terms, would have to move back to the most recent release they owned perpetual rights to, e.g., System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager. The LTSB of Configuration Manager now delivers an alternative option that will be supported on a fixed 10-year lifecycle, although it is important to understand the limitations inherent in a long-term serviced management product vs. the easily updatable current branch model our customers have been rapidly moving to.</p> <p>While the LTSB is derived from the current branch of Configuration Manager (version 1606), it is scaled back and reduced in functionality to permit the extended support model. LTSB of Configuration Manager will not receive new functionality or support for new Windows 10 and Windows Server releases. It will continue to receive security updates only. By design, LTSB of Configuration Manager is intended to be fixed in functionality and very infrequently updated, so any features or components that require continuous updating or are tied to a cloud service have been removed. There is a <a href="https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/windowsitpro/2016/10/07/more-on-windows-7-and-windows-8-1-servicing-changes/"><u>new blog post</u></a> just released today that explains in a lot of detail the monthly rollup and security-only quality updates and the update deployment strategies.</p> <p>While it is great that your monthly update process can be significantly simplified by adopting the new servicing model, you may also need to be aware that there might be changes necessary on your update management process using Configuration Manager and the recommendations from the ConfigMgr team.</p> <p>Starting on the second Tuesday of October, only two security updates will be released for the month. We understand that this may become an issue for customers operating in environments with limited network bandwidth. To help ensure that our customers have the best experience given this situation, we have created the following recommendations when managing the two monthly updates in the Security Updates classification:</p> <p><em>NOTE: The preview rollup released on the 3<sup>rd</sup> Tuesday of the month is optional and does not contain any new security updates. We assume you will approve them on a case-by-case basis, and therefore the following recommendations will not cover it.</em></p> <h1>No network bandwidth or disk space concerns</h1> <p>In this case, neither network bandwidth nor client local disk space is a concern for your environment to download a large size update like monthly rollup could become. You can always choose to approve at least one of the two security updates released for the month based on your business needs. At a minimum, you should approve the security-only quality update for the month to keep your environment secure.</p> <p>If you are using ConfigMgr 2012 and above (including Current Branch) and have an Automatic Deployment Rule (ADR) configured based on the Patch Tuesday template, the rule will continue to work in your environment.</p> <h2>Compliance Status when both security updates are approved:</h2> <ul> <li>When the monthly rollup installs first: <ul> <li style="padding-left: 30px">The security-only quality update would then no longer be applicable to the computer, since the entire content of that security-only quality update would already be installed.</li> <li style="padding-left: 30px">Update compliance would show compliant for the monthly rollup, not required for the security-only quality update</li> <li style="padding-left: 30px">Deployment compliance status would show compliant for the monthly rollup</li> </ul> </li> </ul> <ul> <li>When the security-only quality update installs first, the monthly rollup will be installed next. <ul> <li style="padding-left: 30px">Update compliance would show compliant for both the security-only and monthly rollup</li> <li style="padding-left: 30px">Deployment compliance would show compliant for both the security-only and monthly rollup</li> </ul> </li> </ul> <h1>Network bandwidth and/or disk space concerns</h1> <p>To minimize the network bandwidth and client disk space impact to your environment during the Update Tuesday (commonly referred to as Patch Tuesday) week, we are recommending you only deploy the security-only quality update that has a small content size.</p> <h2>For ConfigMgr 2007 customers</h2> <p>You should only deploy the update that contains the Security Only string. See <a href="https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/configurationmgr/2016/11/04/deploying-superseded-down-level-windows-updates-with-microsoft-configuration-manager-2007">Deploying Superseded Down Level Windows Updates with Microsoft Configuration Manager 2007</a> for more information.</p> <h2>For ConfigMgr 2012 and above (including Current Branch):</h2> <ul> <li>If you dont have an ADR configured for security updates, you should only deploy the update that contains the Security Only string</li> <li>If you have previously configured an ADR rule based on the Patch Tuesday template, you should take one of the following two actions: <ol> <li>Modify the existing ADR rule to add a clause and filter on the title<img width="634" height="619" class="alignnone wp-image-41585 size-full" src="https://msdnshared.blob.core.windows.net/media/2016/10/Patch-Tuesday-ADR1.jpg" /><br /> <em></em><em>Suggested English (ENU) title search strings (which must be adjusted for other languages) – </em><em>Security Only</em><br /> <em>To avoid localization implications, it is recommended that you should create the ADR by running SCCM console locally or on the same language as the site server. It will not work if console language and site server language are different. </em></li> <li>The alternative is to disable the ADR rule and manually deploy the update that contains the Security Only Quality Update string if you have concerns about filtering by a string in the update title, especially if you are using multiple languages across your site servers. Technical Preview releases give you an opportunity to try out new Configuration Manager features in a test environment before they are made generally available. This month’s new preview features include:</p> <ul> <li><strong>Windows 10 Upgrade Analytics</strong> – Assess and analyze device readiness and compatibility with Windows 10 to allow smoother upgrades. This is done through integration with Windows <a href="https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/itpro/windows/deploy/upgrade-analytics-get-started"><u>Upgrade Analytics</u></a>.</li> <li><strong>Office 365Client ManagementDashboard</strong> – Use the Office 365client managementdashboard to track Office 365 updates and deployments.</li> <li><strong>Deploy Office 365 apps to clients </strong>– We have added a new Office 365 Servicing node in the Software Library where you can deploy Office 365 apps to clients.</li> <li><strong>Improvements for BIOS to UEFI conversion</strong> – An OS deployment task sequence can now be customized with a new variable, TSUEFIDrive, so that the Restart Computer step will prepare the drive for transition to UEFI. See the <a href="https://technet.microsoft.com/library/mt772349(TechNet.10).aspx#Improvements-for-BIOS-to-UEFI-conversion"><u>documentation</u></a>for additional details on the necessary customizations.</li> <li><strong>Improvement to Endpoint Protection antimalware policy settings</strong> – You can now specify the level at which the Endpoint Protection Cloud Protection Service will block suspicious files.</li> <li><strong>Boundary Group Improvements</strong> – Improvements have been made to boundary groups to allow more granular control of fallback behavior, and greater clarity of what distribution points are used.</li> </ul> <p>This release also includes the following new features for customers using System Center Configuration Manager connected with Microsoft Intune to manage mobile devices:</p> <ul> <li><strong>TouchID, ApplePay and Zoom DEP Settings</strong> – DEP provides the ability for admins to create enrollment profiles to skip initial setup screens for new iOS devices. TouchID, ApplePay and Zoom have now been added as options to configure in the iOS enrollment profiles.</li> <li><strong>Windows Store for Business</strong> – Windows Store for Business allows customers to obtain applications (purchased or free) and deploy them to users in their organization.</li> <li><strong>Android, iOS, and Windows Additional Settings</strong> – New settings have been added for Android, iOS, and Windows.</li> <li><strong>Native Connection Types for Windows 10 VPN Profiles</strong>– You can now create Windows 10 VPN profiles with Microsoft Automatic, IKEv2, and PPTP connection types in the Configuration Manager console without using OMA-URI.</li> <li><strong>Intune Compliance Charts</strong> – Admins can get a quick view of overall device compliance, and top reasons for non-compliance using new charts under the Monitoring.</li> </ul> <p>Update 1609 for Technical Preview is available in the Configuration Manager console. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Author</strong>: Aaron Czechowski, Senior Program Manager, Enterprise Client and Mobility</p> <p>First, if you are using Configuration Manager and interested in deploying Windows 10, version 1607, you should first read the <a href="https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/enterprisemobility/2016/06/24/faq-system-center-configuration-manager-current-branch/"><u>recent FAQ post</u></a>, especially the topic: Will previous update versions support newer builds of Windows 10 under the Application Compatibility (AppCompat) section. This page explains the support matrix for Configuration Manager versions and Windows 10 versions. Please read that first.</p> <p>The Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK) for Windows 10, version 1607, is available on the <a href="https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/windows-assessment-deployment-kit"><u>Microsoft Hardware Dev Center</u></a> (adksetup.exe file version 10.1.14393.0).</p> <p>This version of the ADK has been primarily tested and is supported starting with the most recent release of the Configuration Manager current branch, <a href="https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/enterprisemobility/2016/07/22/now-available-update-1606-for-system-center-configuration-manager/"><u>version 1606</u></a>. As noted in the above FAQ (which you already read, right?) we have limited support for Windows 10, version 1607, in Configuration Manager version 1602. Customers that are still on this version of Configuration Manager and will be deploying the newer version of Windows 10 can upgrade the ADK to the latest version if desired, or remain with the prior version, Windows ADK for Windows 10, version 1511. (Although be sure to read the <a href="https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/enterprisemobility/2015/11/20/issue-with-the-windows-adk-for-windows-10-version-1511/"><u>prior blog post</u></a> on that topic.) We strongly recommend upgrading to the latest ADK version, but basic forward compatibility is supported during the transition period.</p> <p><sup>2</sup> The newer ADK is only needed if deploying Windows 10, version 1607.</p> <h1>Frequently Asked Questions</h1> <p><strong> Q. Does this include the hotfix 3143760 for the Windows 10 ADK, version 1511?</strong></p> <p>As noted in support article <a href="https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3143760"><u>3143760</u></a>, that hotfix only applies to version 1511. The underlying problem requiring the hotfix is not present in the Windows 10 ADK, version 1607.</p> <p><strong> Q. Whats the process to update? Do I need to restart the server? </strong></p> <p>Use the following process to update the Windows ADK on your site server(s):</p> <ol> <li>Uninstall the previous Windows ADK from Programs/Features control panel.</li> <li>Install the Windows ADK for Windows 10, version 1607. <ul> <li>NOTE: We do not recommend using a custom installation path for the Windows ADK when used in conjunction with Configuration Manager.</li> </ul> </li> <li>Restart the server. (You may not be prompted to restart, and some will suggest that this is not required. The best practice to ensure all components are properly registered, especially the WIMGAPI filter driver used by DISM, is to restart.)</li> <li>Refresh the package for the User State Migration Tool for Windows. Select the package and click Update Distribution Points.</li> </ol> <p><strong> Q. Do I need to update boot images and media? </strong></p> <p>Yes, any Windows 10-based boot image will need to be regenerated to consume the new version of Windows PE. (Updating the boot image just rebuilds from a cached copy, injecting the latest Configuration Manager binaries, drivers, etc.) There is not (yet) currently a process in the console to regenerate boot image with the latest winpe.wim (as this was traditionally handled by the Configuration Manager setup process), so it does require triggering the ExportDefaultBootImage WMI method against the target boot images. Here is a Windows PowerShell script (<a target="_blank" href="https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/RegenerateBootImageWinPE10-f508f1e4">RegenerateBootImageWinPE10.ps1</a>), written by Wilhelm Kocher and Herbert Fuchs from Microsoft Premier, to automate and simplify this process. Run the script from an elevated Windows PowerShell prompt.</p> <p><strong> Q. Im upgrading from Configuration Manager version 1511/1602 to version 1606. Should I upgrade the Windows ADK first? </strong></p> <p>The in-console servicing updates do not currently regenerate the default boot images, just update them with the latest Configuration Manager binaries. You can use the ADK install process above to upgrade the Windows ADK before or after updating the site to 1606, but you also must use the process above to regenerate the default boot images so that they are using the latest version of Windows PE.</p> <p><strong> Q. My site version is currently System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager SP1 and I plan on upgrading to current branch version 1511 and then immediately updating the site to version 1606. When should I upgrade the Windows ADK?</strong></p> <p>The default boot images will be regenerated from the installed Windows ADK during the CD-based setup process when upgrading to the current branch baseline build. While we do not support the use of the Windows ADK for Windows 10, version 1607, with any version of System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager, we recommend upgrading the Windows ADK first (immediately before upgrading the site) so that the latest Windows PE is consumed at that time.</p> <p><strong> Q. What about Configuration Manager Technical Preview sites?</strong></p> <p>Yes, the Windows ADK for Windows 10 should be upgraded to version 1607 with Configuration Manager Technical Preview version 1606 and later.</p> <p><strong> Q. What about the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT)?</strong></p> <p>We have done limited testing with MDT 2013 Update 2 and the Windows ADK for Windows 10, version 1607, thus support this usage.
