Twitter launches Connect tab to help you find accounts to follow

Twitter is revamping its tabs at the top of your feed today by launching Connect, a new feature aimed at helping you figure out which accounts to follow. The Connect tab will pull together follow recommendations based on where you're located, who you already follow, and major events happening on Twitter. The new tab, on iOS and Android, is similar to a previous "Find People" tab that lived in the same space.

Along with Twitter's personalized recommendations, users will also be able to find friends by syncing contacts from their address book. Twitter says the tab will change over time as it continues to refine its recommendations based on your activity. It will also show you why it's suggesting you follow specific accounts (basically, if you follow a lot of basketball players, maybe you'll want to follow more basketball players). If Connect sounds familiar, it's probably because the Notifications tab used to have the same name. But now, instead of showing you what's already happened, Twitter is hoping the Connect tab can actually live up to its name.

As Twitter continues to fail to appeal to a mainstream audience, Connect is likely an attempt to make it easier for users to figure out what to do when they're on Twitter. If you're one of Twitter's many users who only follows 30 random kids you went to high school with, your timeline is probably stagnant and uninteresting. By bumping up the number of people you follow, Twitter is hoping to make your feed something you actually want to look at.

Along with the launch of the Connect tab, Twitter also launched a redesign of its mobile website today. Connect will begin showing up on iOS and Android today.

Correction, 11:43AM ET: An earlier version of this article said Twitter had redesigned its app, when the redesign was only for the mobile website.
