I'm an architect in LA specializing in multifamily residential. I'd like to do my best to explain a little understood reason why all new large development in LA seems to be luxury development. by clipstep in LosAngeles

That may be because they have the option of simply leaving the city and moving to one that isn't pure insanity. That's what I'm currently doing.

I'm not going to complain further, and I'm not going to spend years of effort trying to change the city. I'm just moving somewhere that this isn't one of the problems I have to deal with.

I am a small business owner. The ACA meant I dropped all employees to part-time, and a minimum wage hike means I would have to let a couple go. How do people not understand the basic economics behind this? by Gerrigen in Libertarian

Sounds like your complaining about your poor decision making/lack of due diligence in addition to complaining about government regulation.

It clearly wasn't a positive affiliation if these costs were not figured in.

Katie Hill for Congress AMA by KatieForCA25 in SandersForPresident

[–]JordanLeDoux[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AMA's of this nature don't make it to the front page without the mod team:

  1. Coordinating the AMA in advance.
  2. Having proof of the person conducting the AMA.
  3. Understanding the nature of the AMA they want to conduct and the reasons they would like to speak to our community.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't remain vigilant about getting the facts, but this is one of the MAJOR jobs that the mod team performs, and essentially no AMA's are allowed in this sub without prior mod approval.

Bernie Sanders to Rand Paul: I Live 50 Miles From Canadian Health System; Don't See Any "Gulags" Over There by Bernie4Ever in SandersForPresident

[–]JordanLeDoux[M] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For this one? The reports were mostly rather dull things that I'm sure the Trump supporters thought was witty. "Is that from his three houses", "can he see the FBI from there", that sort of thing.

They also report articles like this for "sexualization of a minor" and "incites violence", I think because they believe that doing so enough forces some reddit wide algorithm to do something.

They honestly aren't the brightest crayons in the box, and I'm pretty sure they find it infuriating that they can't extend the censorship/propaganda/lies in T_D to the rest of reddit.

I don't really find it frustrating, just strange, considering that the books pretty explicitly state some of these things. The butterbeer one is just one example.

Quite possibly. This is the first time this sort of thing has happened, and we're likely to discuss it during our moderator meeting this weekend.

Hello.

For about an hour this post was removed from the subreddit. In the interests of transparency, I'm going to explain why that happened.

This post doesn't violate any of the rules of the subreddit and was removed by automoderator automatically. The reason this occurred is because we have automod configured to remove unapproved posts that receive many reports. Normally this isn't an issue because the moderators normally approve such threads after the first or second report.

However in this case, there was a lull in moderator availability that perfectly coincided with a FLOOD of reports. Once the post hit r/all, Trump supporters, Republicans, etc. routinely report things they don't like just because. Unfortunately, in this case it just happened to all come at a time where no mod was around to approve the post.

As soon as we noticed what had happened, we restored this post. In the interest of making sure that the mod team is transparent, I'm leaving this stickied comment so that everyone knows what occurred and nothing is swept under the rug.

Please carry on discussion, and please keep that discussion within the rules of the subreddit.

Thank you,
The mod team of /r/SandersForPresident

The tick that makes people allergic to red meat with one bite seems to be spreading by mvea in Health

Because humans are omnivores? Because people in general are terrified of forced, permanent lifestyle changes? Because parasites/diseases that can permanently alter you are naturally concerning? Because things where it's "too late" by the time you notice are what human brains are made to obsess about?

There's nothing pathetic about their statement. It's arguably more human than yours.

A Harry Potter RPG? by triedge763 in harrypotter

[–]JordanLeDoux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, as a developer this is something I've explored before and drawn the same obvious conclusions. A game like this might be almost impossible to do with 3D graphics outside of a half billion dollar VR game, but just might be possible with something that is sprite based or text based.

A Harry Potter RPG? by triedge763 in harrypotter

[–]JordanLeDoux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I could probably make this game myself if it weren't for "Skyrim level" graphics and animations. I can't do animations, models, texturing, etc. for shit, but I could program an online version that implements these mechanics I think.

I've actually thought about this before, and the biggest problem for a game like this (besides getting the necessary trademarks and so on) is how exactly the magic system would work.

There was never any suggestion in the books that "amount of magic" was a significant issue for wizards and witches in most cases. They could just fling spells all day, so long as they weren't trying to cast spells that were insanely overpowered.

If you knew how to do the spell, you could just keep doing it more or less.

Which is perfect for a story where you have a narrative, but crap for a game.

So what would the mechanic be for magic? Mana points or something like that? How do you scale the cost of spells correctly?

Also, how do you make every spell interact correctly with objects in the world? If you learned the Levitation Charm, it would either be useless or the game would have to support that charm for most objects in the world. That goes for a LOT of spells, like summoning and banishing.

How do you handle conjuring? What about transfiguration? How do you implement animagi without it feeling like it's a set of dice with too few options?

The mechanics of making this sort of game are the biggest problem IMO, and why it hasn't been done yet. The game engine itself would be a massive undertaking.

Otherwise you end up with something like the Lego Harry Potter games, where the magic was basically an afterthought.

Teenagers' tobacco use hits a record low, with a sharp drop in e-cigarettes by BlankVerse in Health

[–]JordanLeDoux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not to be too pedantic, but e-cigarettes are not a tobacco product. They contain nicotine, but the nicotine is lab made, not extracted.* They are legally a "tobacco" product mainly because of how most of the laws regarding nicotine are written, and the fact that most legislatures and agencies just don't put that much time into researching most bills.

For instance, in Los Angeles, the city council literally passed an ordinance stating that all laws which apply to cigarettes applied to e-cigarettes as well because doing anything else was just too time consuming for them.

* Some e-cigarette liquids ARE made from extracted nicotine, but these are almost all for either marketing ("get real tobacco flavor!") or because the company doing so is trying to extract some of the other volatiles in the tobacco plant.
