A. SITUATION ANALYSIS
Description of the context
Venezuela continues to face a complex situation in which access to curative and preventive health treatment and water, sanitation and hygiene remain severely constrained. The 8 hospitals and 33 health centres of the Venezuelan Red Cross (VRC), as part of the health system are affected by the widespread shortages of medical equipment, medicines and medical consumables.
Highlights
The number of new reported confirmed cases slightly decreased in comparison to the previous week (68 cases vs 94).
Beni continues to be the major hotspot of EVD transmission, followed by Mandima and Mambasa.
Given the high number of EVD cases reported in Mambasa and based on the need to increase the community engagement in the EVD response, UNICEF opened an operational office in Mambasa town.
Flooding continues in Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Sudan while Senegal, Ethiopia, and Cote d’Ivoire remain dry
A poor start to the rainfall season across Senegal and the Gambia has resulted in abnormal dryness.
Heavy rainfall last week, following a wet weather pattern in July, caused flash flooding in Sierra Leone. Continued heavy rainfall will maintain a high flood risk.
Fewer rainy days in southern Cote d’Ivoire has resulted in abnormal dryness. More seasonal rainfall is forecast next week.
This report is for the media and the general public.
