Mogadishu, Somalia, 10 December 2017—The Federal Government of Somalia’s Ministry of Health with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF today launched a focused 3-day oral polio vaccination campaign targeting 726 699 children under 5 years of age in districts of Banadir and Lower and Middle Shabelle regions.

Since 2014, over 73,000 Somali refugees have been repatriated from Dadaab – the world’s largest refugee camp in Kenya’s northeastern province. The majority of these returnees had previously fled from rural areas currently under the control of the Somali militant group Al-Shabaab. For four years, Kenyan authorities labored to shut down Dadaab, labeling it as a breeding ground for terrorists. Human rights groups dismissed such charges as fear mongering and victimization of already vulnerable refugees.

SOMALIA CONFLICT: EXACTING A TERRIBLE TOLL ON CIVILIANS, AL SHABAAB RESPONSIBLE FOR MOST CIVILIAN CASUALTIES – UN REPORT

Geneva / Mogadishu – Armed conflict in Somalia continues to exact a heavy toll on civilians, damaging infrastructure and livelihoods, displacing millions of people, and impeding access to humanitarian relief for communities in need, a UN report published on Sunday said.

This is the first attempt by UNSOM to quantify casualties and assess the toll of the conflict on civilians covering the period between 1 January 2016 and 14 October 2017. During this period, ground and air attacks inflicted heavy casualties, caused damage to public and private infrastructure, and loss of livestock and impeded access to humanitarian relief for civilians in need.

A total of 4,585 civilian casualties were recorded

During October – November 2017 DTM Libya’s Mobility Tracking identified 432,574 migrants* across all 22 mantikas (regions) in Libya. Migrants were identified in 99 baladiyas and 531 muhallas.

Over 142,000 people in ten countries will benefit from fourteen projects totaling $3.7 committed by Canadian Foodgrains Bank in November.

The projects are being implemented by Foodgrains Bank members ADRA Canada, Canadian Baptist Ministries, Emergency Relief and Development Overseas (ERDO), Mennonite Central Committee Canada, Presbyterian World Service & Development and World Renew, in collaboration with their local partners.

Mogadishu, 8 December 2017 – The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia, Ambassador Francisco Caetano Madeira, has hailed a power-sharing agreement signed on Wednesday, between Galmudug state and the Ahlu Sunna Wal Jama’a (AWSJ).

The agreement provides for a position of “Chief of Ministers”, which is an equivalent of the Head of Government, for the President of the Administration of Central Regions (ASWJ), in the Galmudug government.

Introduction and Background

Turkey is home to the largest refugee population in the world, including over 3.2 million1 Syrians, and over 320,000 asylum seekers from other countries, such as Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia. While no one under any form of International Protection in Turkey has the legal status of refugees, for brevity, they will be called refugees in this report.

This report is a record of a Forum event held on 5 November, before the 13 November 2017 election day. Election day itself was largely peaceful, and the international observer mission reported only minor irregularities on election day, including vote buying and violation of secrecy during voting. However, inflammatory and divisive rhetoric, and allegations of rigging by the opposition, led to violent protests both before and after the elections. The incumbent Kulmiye party was declared victorious on 21 November, followed by the opposition’s concession the following day.

The two high-level meetings convened by the Somali President H.E Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed “Farmajo”, were attended by representatives from 25 countries, six multilateral organizations, heads of Somalia’s Federal Member States, and Benadir Regional Administration.
