Located at 33 East 20th Street, but never advertised, this Moore Brothers Wine Company is the third of its kind. The work of Gregory Moore, who spent twenty years as the sommelier and GM of Le Bec-Fin in Philadelphia, Moore Brothers Wine Company began in Pennsauken, New Jersey, before Moore opened another in Wilmington, Delaware, and finally a third in Manhattan in 2006. On Saturday, Rob and I circled the Upper East Side until we finally found the Rosenthal Wine Merchant, tucked away on 84th Street, between 1st and 2nd. Unlike most wine shops, this one actually imports its own wine from small European producers, most of which are family owned. However, you won’t find any of its French (75% of the store’s holdings) or Italian (25%) wines on window display, so be careful when walking, as this one might get away. Peering through the glass will offer glimpses of cases ready to ship. The ‘store’ is located downstairs (though none of the bottles are actually priced), which is where Saturday’s tasting was held, and where one is free to shop (even if just for a single bottle of wine). Located in Williamsburg, the D.O.C. Wine Bar offers a delectable tour through a sampling of Italian wines. With a sidewalk café on N. 7th Street, there was little reason to imbibe inside. (More reason to revisit on a cooler night.) And though the menu has a stellar selection of reds, including twelve by the glass, there was a unique offering of whites that kept me engaged on a buggy summer night. (more…)

The first thing one notices upon entering Craftbar, the sister restaurant of Craft, is the row of floor to ceiling wine coolers that line the walkway above the bar. And though the space itself is pretty uninspiring (depending solely upon high ceilings like most restaurant/bars in the Flatiron district, and not much else), the menu of carefully selected wines was enough inspire another trip. The tasting room at Vintage New York, a division of Rivendell Winery in the Hudson Valley, offers a unique approach to tasting local wines. With thirty-six wines available on the short list (most of which cost only $8 or $10 a glass), this is a fair-priced option for the indecisive (like me), who might be advised to avoid the big list-an offering of over 200 varieties of New York State wines, all of which are available by the glass.
