German elections likely on 24 September

The German elections, where chancellor Angela Merkel will seek a fourth mandate, should be held on 24 September. The date was proposed by the government on Wednesday and will be fixed after president Joachim Gauck's approval. The candidate of the Social-Democratic Party, the second most important after Merkel's Christian-Democrats, will be named at the end of the month.
