Italy seeks core EU of maximum 12 states

Italian foreign minister Paolo Gentiloni told the Rainews24 broadcaster in Rome on Sunday that Italy will "fight" for a "new type" of EU. He said the club of 28 states should contain "a smaller circle that share the single currency, the Schengen Treaty [on free travel] and especially better coordination of defence. A core of seven to 12 European countries which may have greater integration levels".
