Beyond Borders Movie

After a day of studying on Saturday and  some housework I had a rest on the couch at night watching Beyond Borders on TV. The movie made quite a bit of impact on me.  I found the story a bit misplaced; a holliwood love story against a background of war, famine, starvation and corruption in which Sarah (Angelina Jolie) was dressed like a fashion queen. But on the other side the movie gave a realistic impression about the horrors in the world. It stirred a lot of feelings in me of guilt and sadness about the situation many people live in. It reminds me to give refugees to our countries a welcoming feeling whenever you get the change because you have no idea what they went through. They are coming to find some peace and I admire the people who accept them and help them further in their journey.

Anyway the movie Beyond Borders is about Dr Nick, a relieve worker, who crashes a party in London to plead for money for his refugee camp in Ethiopia. Sarah, a sheltered woman get intrigued and gets her money together in order to provide supplies. She falls in love and follows him to two other disaster areas, the jungle in Cambodia and to the war in Chechnya over a time period of ten years. Eventhough I found some things a bit weird, I stil found it a worthwhile and good movie to see.

We'll pull down the barriers between the way we are onstage and off We'll update the definition of puberty We get on your nerves, but for once you'll understand why.We will make all other art on puberty superfluous You'll think we're super cool."

'Once and for all we're gonna tell you who we are so shut up and listen' is a play performed by 13 teenagers in the age from 14 to 18. They don't talk much because everything they would say is a cliche said one girl. The show is therefore very much physical theatre.

We bought a ticket through the school and went to this play yesterday night. It put us right back to earth. My mother told me once "When you became a teenager I asked you why do you have to be like this" and I said "I don't want to be the nice girl anymore" I wanted to belong, to grow up, to find out who I was, to have fun, to do the things adults do, to love, to escape, to do things differently than my parents did. I was a teenager.

When seeing this play it all came back, the good, the ugly, the energy, the lethargic, the vulnerability, the rebelliousness, the childishness, the aggressive. It is shown in chaos, a roller coaster of hormones, of growing up.

I had a busy week doing a lot of work, dealing with problems than on a Saturday having to deal with a teenager caused a breakdown. Than we break up, I mean cheered up and went to the play.

Afterwards, we were all eating chips with mayo at 10 pm at night (bad to the bone). We were sitting on the couch together in peace, we hugged and we understood. We were thinking about the line one kid said on stage "Everything has been done before but not by me and not now." Tomorrow everything will be back to normal again. But we know now all the above belongs to normal.

Midsummer nights dream

Hermia and Lysander.........................................Puck surrounded by the fairies Yesterday night I went to the play Midsummer night dream performed and interpreted by the students of Mayke's and Davy's school Unlimited. First I was a bit apprehensive to go. I knew it was a play from Shakespeare. I didn't learn much about him at school and thought it was all heavy stuff . You know what; I absolutely loved it. I was enchanted and entertained all the way through. This was of course first of all credit to the students. I was very impressed by them. The story is about two couples Hermia & Lysander and Helena &Demetrius and the many complications in their love. This is made worse by Puck a mischievous spirit. Puck was sent out by Oberon, king of fairyland to apply a flowers juice to the eyes of Demetrius. The juice will make the person fall in love with the first one he sees upon awakening. Puck mistakes however Lysander for Demetrius. In the enchanted forest where most of the story takes place Bottom the weaver and his friends Snug, Snout, Quince and Flute practise a play for the wedding of the Duke of Athens and Hippolyta, a lady warrior A lot more happened, but find that out for yourself. I feel that me on discovery of all these great experiences thinks if only education was so exciting when I was young. The theme of the play is that emotion and imagination influences the perception of human beings and a famous quote in the play is "The course of true love never did run smooth" Sight

Bride Flight

Yesterday night we went to the New Zealand premiere of the Movie Bride flight, which is based on a true story and I loved it. The movie starts with 3 woman who reunite in the 70's at a funeral. These woman were on the KLM flight that won the 1953 last Great Race from London to Christchurch. The movie is called bride flight because many passenger on the plane were Dutch immigrant woman who went to New Zealand to join their fiance's This premiere was attended by many Dutch immigrants, like me, who laughed as they recognised things we all dealt with. It was also interesting because it was filmed in places like Hokitika and Greymouth on the West Coast and here in Christchurch. That's probably why the mayor was there as well. There was romance in the movie as sweet intervenance of the hard realities of daily life. The film is a must see although the book is a lot better (as usual) as an older lady sitting next to me said.
