A senior Taliban commander from Helmand Province: “The 17-year-long struggle and sacrifices of thousands of our people finally yielded fruit... We proved it to the entire world that we defeated the self-proclaimed world’s lone super power."

All sides have committed mistakes. But the only party that's steadfastly rejected intra-Afghan peace dialogue over the past decade to negotiate peace and end the war has been the Taliban.

It is more likely to be a phased drawdown than an abrupt withdrawal.

After Syria, will POTUS also draw down (if not pull out) troops in Afghanistan & Iraq? A precipitous withdrawal may be politically expedient now but is a strategic mistake (re CT efforts) & could also undermine POTUS’ reelection if ISIS/AQ regroups & threatens US security again.

Valid points. It’ll also have far broader repercussions beyond Syria: will send wrong message to friends and foes & undermine US credibility as reliable ally; will help resurgence of not only ISIS but also al Qaeda & associates in the wider region.

Placing Iran as the 13th most powerful military (well ahead of Pakistan) is laughable.

The statement says resolution 2231 "bans" Iran from undertaking any activity related to missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons. But the resolution uses the word "calls upon"- which Tehran sees as not legally binding. It was a last-minute comprosise in JCPOA negotiations.

Were there no female officials in Panjsher to include in these meetings? The only woman present is US ambassador’s wife. Slogans of women’s rights/participation ring hollow when you don’t lead by example.

Let's see if the trilateral partnership lives up to its name. The acronym "JAI" means victory or praise for success in Hindi.

This Afghan newspaper claims has landed at Bagram air base near Kabul. Surprise visit? Is it true?

The optics of this aren't positive at all. It indicates deteriorating security & persistent danger of green-on-green/blue attacks. Afghan officials around Gen. Miller all appear to be unarmed (understandably, after Kandahar incident), but such safety measures could sow distrust.

A grim reminder of deteriorating situation in Afghanistan. Gen. Miller now carries a rifle visiting Afghan officials (after close call in Kandahar) & rockets land near this meeting in Ghazni (an hour drive from Kabul) where government couldn’t hold elections recently.

As in after Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan, talks about setting up an interim government to accommodate armed opposition is unlikely to pave the way for peace settlement. Rather it's deepening frictions within ruling political system and benefiting Taliban agenda.
