| The Leo Baeck Institute is a research, study, and lecture center whose library and archives offer comprehensive documentation for the study of the history and culture of German-speaking Jewry. Fellowships are awarded for research in New York or Germany on the social, communal, and intellectual history of German-speaking Jewry. Financial assistance is provided to doctoral students for dissertation research and to young academics for the preparation of a scholarly essay or book. |

| Applicants must be US citizens and PhD candidates or recent PhDs (degree awarded within the last two years).

| Application Guidelines | |
|
To apply for a fellowship for research in Germany, please follow the instructions for the DAAD German Studies Research Grant. To apply for a fellowship for research at the Leo Baeck Institute in New York, please follow the instructions below:If possible all parts of the application form should be typewritten or otherwise neatly printed. Confidential letters of recommendation and official transcripts should be forwarded in sealed envelopes. Please do not staple any of the application materials. A complete application consists of the following parts: 1. the completed application form 2. a curriculum vitae, 3. a full description of the research project, and for doctoral students: 4. official transcripts (graduate and undergraduate work) 5. evidence of enrollment in a Ph.D. program, and 6. two letters of recommendation: one by their doctoral advisor, one by another scholar familiar with their work or for Ph.D.s: 4. evidence of their degree (transcripts not required) and 5. two letters of recommendation from two colleagues familiar with their research. All materials requested above (except official transcripts and recommendation letters) must be submitted in quadruplicate. The fellowship holders agree to submit a brief report on their research activities at the end of the fellowship period. |
