Description
The sup
element is used to define superscript—text that appears half a character’s
height above the baseline of the line it’s on. It’s most often used in
mathematical formulas, or for the purposes of indicating footnote
references.
The example would render on screen as shown in Figure 1.

Here’s an example in which the
sup element is used for the purpose of indicating a
footnote reference:
