WebRTC services have already permeated corporate communications in the form of videoconferencing solutions. However, WebRTC has the potential of going beyond and catalyzing a new class of services providing more than calls with capabilities such as mass-scale real-time media broadcasting, enriched and augmented video, person-to-machine and machine-to-machine communications. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Luis Lopez, CEO of Kurento, introduced the technologies required for implementing these idea...| By Allwyn Sequeira | Article Rating: |

Four Questions to Ask When It's Time to Modernize Your Data Center
Cloud computing is here to stay. The agility and scalability of the cloud model - as well as its ability to transform up-front capital expenditures into flexible operating expenditures - are too compelling to ignore. For CIOs in organizations of all sizes, the question is no longer whether to take advantage of the cloud ... but how. Unfortunately, that question isn't as easy to answer as it might sound.
Not all cloud providers are created equal. Different vendors offer different features, terms and service levels. And once you engage with one vendor, it can be difficult to change your mind down the road - even if that vendor's offering doesn't fully mesh with your existing IT practices and policies.
While navigating the cloud marketplace can be a challenge, you can successfully formulate your strategy by weighing your options as a successful journey to the cloud starts with asking the right questions.
Here are just a few that should be top-of-mind:
1. How well will your cloud services integrate with your on-premises IT?
A few companies may be in the fortunate position of being able to simply shift all of their IT infrastructure to the cloud, or to build it all in the cloud from scratch. For most organizations, however, moving to the cloud will be a balancing act. Some applications will transition smoothly, while others may have engineering, security, or compliance requirements that make moving to the cloud impossible.
This means that a cloud strategy really means a hybrid cloud strategy, where the IT services portfolio comprises a mix of cloud-based and on-premises assets. When choosing a cloud vendor, it's important to consider how well the vendor handles this scenario. Will the applications that are suited to the cloud transition seamlessly, or will they require re-engineering to operate in the cloud environment?
2. Will the cloud support your existing IT practices?
Some cloud providers seem to offer a smorgasbord of features, but this abundance comes at a price. Many features offered by cloud vendors are proprietary, meaning your IT staff will need to learn new tools and practices to use them and develop new policies to govern how they are used within your organization.
What's more, over-reliance on such proprietary features can lead to vendor lock-in, because the features on one cloud seldom translate exactly to similar features on another cloud. That's doubly bad when you consider that using more than one cloud vendor is increasingly becoming an industry best practice. Consider carefully whether you can afford to have your applications anchored to a single vendor's offering.
3. Does the cloud support true failover?
Disaster recovery is a very popular use case for cloud services. For many organizations, it's their first step into the cloud world. But unless your cloud provider offers true parity with your on-premises infrastructure, the process of recovery could be laborious and take far longer than you can likely afford.
If your disaster recovery solution requires your IT staff to switch to an unfamiliar set of tools and to support an unfamiliar, proprietary architecture in the event of an incident, you can't have 100 percent assurance. Ideally when disaster strikes, you should be able to quickly spin up a true clone of your infrastructure in the cloud. Not every cloud provider supports this.
4. Does the cloud meet your security requirements?
It's impossible to understate the importance of security. In fact, security is one of the top reasons cited by companies that are reluctant to venture into the cloud - and they're right to be concerned. Although they have demonstrated expertise at operating IT at massive scale, some cloud vendors have frighteningly ineffective, antiquated security policies that don't stop attacks from spreading inside the data center and the cloud.
Ideally, your cloud vendor should offer an environment that supports security policies that are consistent with those you have implemented in your own data center. There should be no double standard; a cloud environment that increases flexibility, but puts the applications running on it at risk, is not an acceptable trade-off.
Plan your journey
By now it should be clear that when it comes to the cloud, one size does not fit all. As with any business decision, there are many factors to weigh and balance - and just because a given cloud vendor is a market leader doesn't necessarily mean that vendor will be the right match for your particular needs and objectives.
Still, choosing a cloud provider needn't be a daunting task. If you approach the market with an eye to your business objectives and how the cloud fits into your existing practices and policies, you can proceed with confidence knowing you've done your homework. You have a wealth of options, so choose wisely.

The buzz continues for cloud, data analytics and the Internet of Things (IoT) and their collective impact across all industries. But a new conversation is emerging - how do companies use industry disruption and technology enablers to lead in markets undergoing change, uncertainty and ambiguity? Organizations of all sizes need to evolve and transform, often under massive pressure, as industry lines blur and merge and traditional business models are assaulted and turned upside down. In this new data-driven world, marketplaces reign supreme while interoperability, APIs and applications deliver un...
A recent article titled “We Are Likely 3-5 Years Out From Advanced Analytics Being Critical To The Viability Of A Company” (and I thought my titles were too long) interviewed Walter Storm, the Chief Data Scientist at Lockheed Martin. The article offers some great perspectives such as:
“There’s also a culture shift required – moving from experience and knee-jerk reactions to immersion and exploration of rich insights and situational awareness.”
About 6 months ago I had this "brilliant" idea that I would like to monitor the water level of my plants living on my balcony. The goal was to keep them healthy and happy (and producing vegetables for me in my urban garden). After looking for a commercial solution to aid me in this project, I discovered that there wasn't anything out there that would do what I need. The primary reason why nothing worked for me was that none of the products out there are capable of monitoring multiple plants at once, leaving me with the need to buy multiple units. At 10-15 containers for plants, this was immedi...
The computer and the network that connects them are both inextricably linked to the success of any business. This truth is at the heart of our contemporary connection economy. "The computer patiently measures and reports. [T]he network creates value in connection. The connection economy values the bridges between the nodes as much as the nodes themselves." - Seth Godin
This train of thought explains why Uber is worth more than the independent cars it connects. It also describes the imperative for enterprises to redefine their network in order to operate in the modern data economy. The inst...
Information technology (IT) advances are transforming the way we innovate in business, thereby disrupting the old guard and their predictable status-quo. It’s creating global market turbulence. Industries are converging, and new opportunities and threats are emerging, like never before.
So, how are savvy chief information officers (CIOs) leading this transition? Back in 2015, the IBM Institute for Business Value conducted a market study that included the findings from over 1,800 CIO interviews from around the globe. The resulting insights are worthy of revisiting today, as we consider the dig...
The mad dash to connect virtually every noun to the internet or The Internet of Things, is creating a massive M2M network for all the devices, systems, sensors and actuators to connect & communicate on the Internet. With that, they need a communications protocol to understand each other. One of those is Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT). MQTT is a “subscribe and publish” messaging protocol designed for lightweight machine-to-machine (or IoT) communications. In this episode of Lightboard Lessons, I light up how MQTT works.
BYOD. IoT. Cloud computing. DevOps. IT professionals today have more demands (and more acronyms) on their time than ever. Application development and delivery are changing rapidly and increasing in complexity, revealing the limitations of traditional DNS approaches in achieving modern network goals. The IT department has made use of open source platforms for decades to provide DNS and traffic management in their internal networks and for their public, internet-facing services. The majority of DNS servers, both on the internet and in enterprise intranets, are open source-based solutions such as...
Artificial Intelligence is the discipline of thinking machines. The field is growing dramatically with the proliferation of high powered computers into homes and businesses and especially with the growing power of smartphones and other mobile devices. Artificial intelligence software is assisting people in most every discipline. The many functions of AI are considered by many to be threatening many human jobs across multiple industries, but others consider it a great producer of jobs since it will help create entirely new industries and free more humans to innovate and create.
JavaScript redefined web applications ushering in a new era of dynamic websites with fluid responsive designs. It has gained a strong following among developers, popular libraries and frameworks like JQuery and Angular JS are all built with JavaScript. The endless design possibilities that JavaScript provides coupled with the numerous libraries available today makes it an indispensable part of web application development.
With billions of sensors deployed worldwide, the amount of machine-generated data will soon exceed what our networks can handle. But consumers and businesses will expect seamless experiences and real-time responsiveness. What does this mean for IoT devices and the infrastructure that supports them? More of the data will need to be handled at - or closer to - the devices themselves.
The network is at the core of every business, yet the majority of today’s networks were not designed to handle the next generation of business requirements. More than two decades ago the world standardized on the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) / Internet Protocol (IP) stack and little innovation has taken place in routing since. Modern networks are built upon the same fundamental protocols established before anyone could envision current demands. This has given rise to an entire industry surrounding routers aimed at delivering bolt-on functionality such as firewalls and load balancers. Th...
A strange thing is happening along the way to the Internet of Things, namely far too many devices to work with and manage. It has become clear that we'll need much higher efficiency user experiences that can allow us to more easily and scalably work with the thousands of devices that will soon be in each of our lives. Enter the conversational interface revolution, combining bots we can literally talk with, gesture to, and even direct with our thoughts, with embedded artificial intelligence, which can process our conversational commands and orchestrate the outcomes we request across our persona...
In his session at @ThingsExpo, Sudarshan Krishnamurthi, a Senior Manager, Business Strategy, at Cisco Systems, will discuss how IT and operational technology (OT) work together, as opposed to being in separate siloes as once was traditional. Attendees will learn how to fully leverage the power of IoT in their organization by bringing the two sides together and bridging the communication gap. He will also look at what good leadership must entail in order to accomplish this, and how IT managers can be the drivers of change within their organizations. He also will discuss the skill sets needed to...
