DevOps is being widely accepted (if not fully adopted) as essential in
enterprise IT. But as Enterprise DevOps gains maturity, expands scope, and
increases velocity, the need for data-driven decisions across teams becomes
more acute. DevOps teams in any modern business must wrangle the ‘digital
exhaust' from the delivery toolchain, "pervasive" and "cognitive" computing,
APIs and services, mobile devices and applications, the Internet of Things,
and now even blockchain.
In this power panel at @DevOpsSummit 19th Cloud Expo, moderated by DevOps
Conference Chair Andi Mann, Gordon Haff, senior cloud strategy marketing and

The State of DevOps at the Start of 2017
By Reanna Miranda
The word—or rather, the contraction—is simple: DevOps. But DevOps, which
refers to the increased communication and collaboration between development
and IT operations, is an ever-changing, sometimes complicated term. While
“dev” and “ops” used to be siloed into separate philosophies,
practices, tools, and work flows, they’re merging into one. The result? A
more efficient, reliable process and product.
Though the basics aren’t exactly new, the DevOps world is still trying to
figure out how it will evolve and integrate into already established
infrastructures. Whether you head a company that relies heavily on DevOps or
you’re just now dipping your toes into the DevOps pond, there’s plenty to
learn—because this movement and culture are anything but set in stone. To
get a better feel for what’s in store for DevO... (more)
2016 has been an amazing year for Docker and the container industry. We had

Of course releases are always really popular, particularly when they fit
requests we had from the community. In particular, we had:
Docker for Mac & Docker for Windows Beta and GA release blog posts, and the
video
Docker 1.12 Built-in Orchestration release, and the DockerCon keynote where
we announced it
And the release of the Docker for AWS and Azure beta
Windows Containers
When Microsoft made Windows 2016 generally available, people rushed to

The widespread success of cloud computing is driving the DevOps revolution in
enterprise IT. Now as never before, development teams must communicate and
collaborate in a dynamic, 24/7/365 environment. There is no time to wait for
long development cycles that produce software that is obsolete at launch.
DevOps may be disruptive, but it is essential.

This post is based on my recent presentation at DevOps Summit Silicon Valley
in November 2016. You can see the entire presentation here.
We call it DevOps but much of the time there's a lot more discussion about
the needs and concerns of developers than there is about other groups.
There's a focus on improved and less isolated developer workflows. There are
many discussions around collaboration, continuous integration and delivery,
issue tracking, source code control, code review, IDEs, and xPaaS - and all
the tools that enable those things. Changes in developer practices may come
up - such as developers taking ownership of code and pulling pager duty.
We also talk about culture a great deal in the context of developers and
DevOps. About touchy-feely topics like empathy, trust, learning, cooperation,
and responsibility. It can all be a bit kumbaya.
What about the O... (more)
While DevOps most critically and famously fosters collaboration,
communication, and integration through cultural change, culture is more of an
output than an input. In order to actively drive cultural evolution,
organizations must make substantial organizational and process changes, and
adopt new technologies, to encourage a DevOps culture.

Sageable - Shannon Williams, co-founder of Rancher Labs; Haseeb Budhani,
co-founder and CEO of Soha; and Dalibor Siroky, Director and co-founder at

focus attention (and resources), where organizations might slip up with the
wrong focus, how to manage change and risk in all three areas, what is
possible and what is not, where to start, and especially how new structures,
processes, and ... (more)

DevOps and Microservices - An In-Depth Look at Security Challenges
DevOps and microservices are permeating software engineering teams broadly,
whether these teams are in pure software shops but happen to run a business,
such Uber and Airbnb, or in companies that rely heavily on software to run
more traditional business, such as financial firms or high-end manufacturers.

business speed and agility benefits, but they have also created problems;
specifically, they have created software security issues.

organizations are seeing today.

Culture: Change or Die
All organizations that did not originate this moment have a pre-existing
culture as well as legacy technology and processes that can be more or less
amenable to DevOps implementation. That organizational culture is influenced
by the personalities and management styles of Executive Management, the wider
culture in which the organization is situated, and the personalities of key
team members at all levels of the organization. This culture and entrenched
interests usually throw a wrench in the works because of misaligned
incentives.
In his session at @DevOpsSummit 20th Cloud Expo, Greg Bledsoe, a managing
consultant at Accenture, will discuss an algorithmic method that even someone
with no positional power who desires to be an agent of change can implement
to achieve cultural transformation and smooth the transition to overcome
these obstacles... (more)
