Business Model Transformation and What it Means to the Data Industry
I recently read an MIT Sloan Management Review article by Clayton
Christensen’s recent book titled “The Hard Truth About Business Model
Innovations.” While the article is full of great observations about
business model transformation, the most important motivation for business
model transformation is found at the end:
“..our understanding of the business model journey allows us to see that,
over the long term, the greatest innovation risk a company can take is to
decide not to create new businesses that decouple the company’s future from
that of its current business units.”
We use the Big Data Business Model Maturity Index as a vehicle for engaging
with our clients about how they can leverage data and analytics to transform
their business models (see Figure 1).

Thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT), our world is more automated and connected than ever before. Just about everything, from cars to refrigerators, to coffee machines, has the ability to connect to the Internet, allowing us to micromanage each individual device. This type of automation is an exciting direction for the world to be moving in and the benefits it brings to businesses are huge.
Thanks to its many business benefits, cloud computing is becoming commonplace within organizations of all sizes. Historically, companies have struggled to determine which model – public or private – best met their needs. But of late, IT professionals are increasingly starting to realize that both public and private clouds can exist harmoniously within the same organization, and that, in many instances, a hybrid cloud model can actually be the most effective approach. 
During 2016 cloud computing celebrated its tenth anniversary. Therefore, at the beginning of 2017, we’ll briefly look at what the next decade may bring. Once again, we find ourselves at the dawn of a new year. And many would say, not a moment too soon. With a series of tumultuous elections around the world and an unusual number of celebrity passings, it's been a rough year. As is our tradition, each year we review last year's predictions and make all new fresh ones! This year, it is my turn to review Jason's 2016 predictions and let you know what I see happening in the coming year.
Whenever you connect anything to the internet, there is risk involved. Just ask the millions of IoT zombies infected with Mirai. Sure, there have been various stories over the years about hacking thermostats, refrigerators, cameras, pacemakers, insulin pumps and other medical devices along with cars, homes and hotel rooms…but Mirai took it to a new level.
Cyberthreats have become more sophisticated over the years, improving methods to take advantage of software information and even completely shut down systems to hold data ransom. As a result, developers and testers must be able to ensure that their programs have the necessary protections in place to prevent attacks and keep business information safe. Here are a few tips to help teams address security measures during testing.
Software-defined infrastructure (SDI) is one of the most popular and ongoing trends within datacenters and cloud environments leading to better infrastructure flexibility by developing the infrastructure based on scripts respectively source code. However, SDIs are more and more becoming just a means to an end since automation, sophisticated algorithms and thus intelligent systems are leading to an Artificial Intelligence defined Infrastructure (AI-defined Infrastructure – AiDI).
Recently an analysis was completed by SmartBear to gauge the sense of what software professionals believe is the core value provided by API virtualization. It was concluded that software professionals, including developers, testers, managers and architects believe that the biggest benefit of virtualization is that it brings teams together by allowing them to collaborate. In total, 18% more respondents indicated that virtualization has more value in uniting teams than it has in adding speed to delivery or reducing costs.
I work from Boston 4 days a week and we're in the middle of a blizzard. (Note: I commute to Boston. I live 4 days a week at Unitrends' Boston/Burlington offices and 3 days a week at Unitrends' Columbia South Carolina offices. So it's fair to note that given my South Carolina roots that a single snowflake could cause a massive panic attack.
