5 Things to Never Do on Google+
Especially number 5!

We all know that every social network is different. Each network has it's own set of unspoken bylaws and they aren't always 100% obvious.

In this post I list the 5 things that I believe to be the most crucial things to avoid if you're trying to build a highly engaged following on Google+.

Read the full post here:

For those who like the tl;dr version:
1. Link dumping (a.k.a. link littering)
2. Ignore Community guidelines
3. Post the exact same thing to multiple communities
4. Talk Google+ "doom and gloom"
5. Use the "also send email to" feature (unwisely)

Regarding that last one, I've cited a few posts by my friends +Stephan Hovnanian, +Mike Allton, and +Daniel Futerman. They've outlined some very savvy ways of utilizing the "Also send email..." feature without being a spammer.

At the end of the day-- use Google+ how you want. But if you're trying to build a highly engaged audience, these 5 things are a great set of guides.

5 Surprising Reasons to Reconsider Google+ for Marketing
But the BIG ANNOUNCEMENT at the end of the post: Buffer now supports Personal Google+ Profiles! http://dustn.ws/2fhmqMF

Most of us here on Google+ know the value, right? Aside from the SEO benefits, we know just how engaging the community can be if you spend the time to engage first. So most of this article, for us Google+ veterans, is common knowledge.

But then at the end of the post they announce that +Buffer now supports connecting and posting to Google+ profiles! What a glorious day! In fact, I'm actually publishing this post using my Buffer account.

Not only does this mean you can share to your Google+ profile from anywhere on the web (using the Buffer Browser Extension) but it also means if you're a Buffer for Business customer, you get the full benefit of Analytics!!!

So, who all is rushing to connect their profiles?

So on desktop there's still a way to view all your G+ notifications, whether in "new" or "classic" view. It may take a bit of canoodling in the upper right if you're signed into more than one account, which I fiddled with a few minutes ago...

Now, I'm gonna post probably the most useful tip. As you know, collections on Google+ are a simple way to get connected to certain content a person posts. However, it's also an easy way to miss out on a lot of stuff that's being posted into other collections. The problem is, you'll have absolutely no idea of it if you just followed a single collection, neither you'll ever know if that other stuff a person posts is actually interesting to you or not. So, here's the tip: instead of following just a collection you liked, add the person to your circles. You will be able to unsubscribe from collections in their feed that you don't like later, but that way you won't miss out on a lot of stuff that might be interesting to you. Think for yourself: if you share one interest, chances are there is much more you might have in common, but you might never figure that out, unless you have them circled.
Basically, what I'm talking about is a smart use of the collection feature as an addition to the circles feature, and not instead of it. Don't just follow collections, follow the person and then use collections to filter out content you might be not willing to see from them. That will surely help to enrich your Google+ experience.

saying just in case... the picture is a random one from the Internet, I just liked the opportunity to bring an ironic aspect by including it in the post. Not sure if it's free to use, please let me know if it's not :)

Dealing with Nudity, Pornography, and Child Pornography on Google+

Google does not allow nudity, pornography, or child pornography on Google+. All three violate provisions of the Google+ User Content and Conduct Policy (http://www.google.com/+/policy/content.html).

* Rule #6 prohibits uploading and sharing content that exploits or abuses children. This includes all child sexual abuse imagery (even cartoon images) and all content that presents children in a sexual manner.

* Rule #9 prohibits sharing nudity, graphic sex acts, or sexually explicit material; and driving traffic to commercial pornography sites.

It is safe to say that you will never see a firm definition published. When a case involving alleged pornography (Jacobellis v. Ohio) went before the US Supreme Court in 1964, Justice Potter Stewart wrote: "I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced within that shorthand description ["hard-core pornography"], and perhaps I could never succeed in intelligibly doing so. But I know it when I see it." The same really applies to sexually explicit content.

It should also be noted that the rule does not set limits about what constitutes nudity. It does not, for example, say that nudity is permitted providing specific body parts are not displayed.

What NOT to do
Do not share links to the content that violates the policy! The policy does not make allowances for sharing content while attempting to stop it. That is stated explicitly in Rule #6 of the policy. That restriction is because distributing links -- even with the best of intent -- increases exposure to the content and can even be illegal.

How to report content violating these rules
You are encouraged to report the content so that the Google+ Abuse Team can deal with the violators. It is best to report the specific posts that violate the rules rather than simply reporting the profiles or pages that shared them. That way you direct the Google+ Abuse Team to the specific problems. It is also best to report the posts using the Desktop interface because that allows you to give the Abuse Team specific information about the type of offense you are reporting.

1. Click the "V" that appears in the upper right-hand corner of the post you want to report.
2. Select Report this post.
3. Click the Something else button in the middle of the area where the post previously appeared. (You might have to scroll down to see that on large posts.)
3. Select It's sexually explicit.
4. Select pornography or nudity if the post does not involve child exploitation or Content involving minors if children are involved.

How to prevent this type of content in your Home stream
The following post describes how unwanted content gets into your Home stream and actions to be taken to stop it from appearing in the future:

Hate seeing what others plussed?

Here's a thing that you may find helpful - if you hate seeing people's plussed posts in your stream, there is a way of avoiding that:

Don't use the All stream - view your posts by circles instead. In the New G+ you'd need to first go to your settings and, under Advanced Settings, turn on circle streams - once you've done that, you'll see a new item in the left-hand-side menu: Circle streams. And from now on you can click on that instead of clicking Home - and choose which circle's posts you want to view.

If you don't like viewing posts by circle you can still use this trick - you'll just need to do one more thing first: create a new circle and put everyone you follow in that new circle. You can call it All, or Everyone, or whatever - it's going to be your main go-to circle, the one you view instead of clicking Home.

This is just a friendly tip, which you are welcome to use if you find it helpful. Please don't use the comments on this post to yell about how you think the goog should do things differently and/or how you wish people would turn their plusses off. Thanks. I'm offering you a friendly tip. I'm not offering you a platform for ranting.

I've had an "Everyone" circle for years, because despite the previous "Home" stream being named "All", it was most certainly not. An Everyone circle was the only way to get all posts showing.
