Perseid Meteor Shower at Dinosaur Park
Alan: "A composite of the Perseid meteors over Dinosaur Provincial Park on the night of August 12/13, 2017. A faint aurora is on the northern horizon at left. The meteors are accumulated over 3 hours of time recording 14 meteors extracted from a total of 645 images."
"One meteor obligingly appeared at centre that was particularly bright and left a long-lasting 'smoke' train."
"The Double Cluster in Perseus is the diffuse spot at centre near the radiant."
"This is a composite of a single image for the ground and sky taken as the start of the sequence, layered with 14 other images of meteors taken over 3 hours, masked to reveal just the meteor."
"The camera was on a Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer Mini tracking device to follow the sky, so the stars in each frame remained in alignment throughout the 3 hours of shooting. So the meteors are in their accurate places in the sky relative to the background sky, retaining the effect of the radiant point in Perseus at centre."
"However, the composite is a bit of a cheat in that the waning Moon rose about 30 minutes after the sequence of 645 frames started, brightening the sky a lot. So most of the meteor images had to be colour adjusted to make them blend into the 'start-of-the-night' dark sky background well. The shower was not so active that this many meteors were visible during the brief hour or so of dark sky this night before moonrise. So the image is not a realistic depiction of the night, but serves as an illustration of the shower radiant over a scenic landscape with the aurora a bonus."

Dinosaur Provincial Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located about two-and-a-half hours drive southeast of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, or 48 kilometers (30 mi), about a half-hour drive northeast of Brooks. Volcán de Fuego and Perseid Meteors
Sergio: "This photo features Volcán de Fuego, in Guatemala, erupting with three conspicuous Perseid meteors streaking across the sky. It was taken on the night of August 13, 2017. I had to work quite hard to find a spot offering a view of both the night sky and the volcanoes that wasn't cloud-covered. This entailed a night on the go and even a 30-minute trek through a river valley. At right is Acatenango, like Fuego, an active stratovolcano. Note the lamps of the climbers on its upper flank. The two bright stars above the volcanoes are Deneb at left and Alpha Cephei at right."

Perseid Meteors and Noctilucent Clouds over Stockholm
Peter: "I was on my rooftop for almost 3 hours on the 14th of August starting shortly after midnight and caught 6 Perseid meteors and some low NLCs just before dawn. Venus is rising to the left of the skyscraper. I used a circular fisheye lens."

Bright Perseid Fireball over Puerto Rico

Perseid Meteors over Germany
Laura: "After many days of cloudy skies, the critical nights, surprisingly and fortunately, were almost cloud free and I could witness dozens of Perseid meteors. The night from the 12th to the 13th was good with 50 observed meteors in four hours, of which at least 49 were Perseids. Almost the same number was captured by my camera pointed at the radiant using a rotating mount. Last night was equally as good with over 40 meteors captured on camera and a similar number seen with my naked eyes. Remarkably, last night there were more bright fireballs, at least three very bright ones of which my camera caught at least one."

Moonless Meteors and The Milky Way
Have you watched the Perseid meteor shower? Though the annual shower's predicted peak was last night, meteor activity should continue tonight (August 13/14), best enjoyed by just looking up in clear, dark skies after midnight. Of course, this year's Perseid shower has the advantage of being active near the August 14th New Moon. Since the nearly New Moon doesn't rise before the morning twilight many fainter meteors are easier to spot until then, with no interference from bright moonlight.
The Perseid meteor shower last occurred near a New Moon in 2013. That's when the exposures used to construct this image were made, under dark, moonless skies from Hvar Island off the coast of Croatia. The widefield composite includes 67 meteors streaming from the heroic constellation Perseus, the shower's radiant, captured during August 8-14, 2013 against a background of faint zodiacal light and The Milky Way. The next moonless Perseid meteor shower will be in August 2018.
