Looking up at some bare winter trees. I went for a walk along the Trinity River and in a wooded section looked up to find this view. Thought there was an image and used the fisheye lens to get this shot.

Zion Lodge and Milky Way

The Milky Way shines in the night sky above the Zion Park Lodge. I stayed at the lodge for the first time last fall and after shooting nightscape images saw the Milky Way was visible above the lodge. I set up my camera and grabbed this shot. The lodge has very subdued lighting (which is good) as it helps preserve the night sky. Here it shows up much brighter than the eye sees it. A great place to stay!

Snowy Winter Hike at the Grand Canyon

On a February hike at the Grand Canyon, I broke trail through these trees to get out to Shoshone Point. This is a somewhat off the map hike. It is east of Yaki Point but there is nothing marked for it. There is a small unmarked dirt parking lot with a trail that goes out the back side. You have to know to stop there. A fairly flat one mile walk gets you to the point which you can usually have to yourself. Here I used the fisheye lens to bring in all the trees and snow. What a fun day!

Ruby Mountains and Milky Way

The Milky Way shines in the night sky over a creek in the Ruby Mountains in the Great Basin of Nevada. I spent a few days here last fall hiking in these glacial carved peaks in a cold dry desert that is the Great Basin.

Northern Lights with 8mm f/2.8 Fisheye

I spent a week in Alaska and went out looking for the aurora to light up the sky every night. Four nights in a row it was clear and nothing. Finally on the 5th night I went out to look at 0400 and saw this......

Sony A7R with Samyang 8mm f/2.8 fisheye. Some might say....hey that is a crop sensor lens....you used it on a full frame camera. Yes I did. It is a small, sharp E mount lens. I have to use it in APS-C crop mode but I still get a 16mp image from it off the A7R.
