A $79 Remix OS laptop may be on the way

Allwinner is all in

1

Remix OS, the Android fork for PCs and tablets, has been growing in popularity and allowing users to give older computers a new life. Now Chinese manufacturer Allwinner is looking to capitalize on the operating system with a new laptop that could end up being the cheapest in the world.

ARMDevices got its hands on a reference laptop built by Allwinner, which may end up selling for as cheap as $79 (but only for bulk orders of models with the lowest specs). The laptop comes with an 11.6-inch 1366 x 768 display and runs on a 64-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of flash storage. (There are options for more RAM and flash storage.) The company also showed off a 14.1-inch version of the laptop that could start at $99.

The pricing of Allwinner's laptop will largely hinge on how many people are interested in the product. Allwinner says if it can mass produce the laptop the price could stay close to that $79 point, but if not it may end up being a bit higher. While you can find more RAM and flash storage in a mid-range Android phone these days, producing a laptop for under $100 is still an accomplishment — if Allwinner can bring it to market.
