Game of Thrones showrunners 'apologize' for the most recent episode's ending

Game of Thrones' sixth season has been terrific so far, full of stunning revelations and emotional plot developments. But the fifth episode, which aired last Sunday, took a turn that tested the patience of many fans, and co-showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss appeared in a taped skit on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night to acknowledge their mistake. [Warning: The video contains spoilers for the May 22, 2016, episode of Game of Thrones.] Weiss and Benioff, sitting amid stacks of cash, admitted that the ending to "The Door," the fifth episode of season 6, may have had some unintended consequences. Hodor, after all, had become quite a meme over the course of Game of Thrones' run. "We forgot how annoying people can be," said Weiss. "That's our bad." "We should've seen that coming," said...

The Division's latest update is great news for solo players

Tom Clancy's The Division released a big patch this week, called update 1.2 or Conflict. Inside are a great new set of end-game missions for solo players and ad hoc groups. Called High Value Targets, these missions are purchased with an entirely new currency called Intel. While the update's launch has been plagued by matchmaking bugs for multiplayer raids, we were able to get a few rounds in chasing down HVTs. Here's our advice on getting the most out of the new gameplay, and tips for making sure you live to tell the tale. For more videos from Polygon, subscribe on YouTube.

Winter sports game Snow gets big snowboarding update ahead of PS4 debut

Snow, the open-world winter sports title from Swedish indie studio Poppermost Productions, is getting its biggest addition yet: snowboarding, the game's first sport beyond skiing. With the long-awaited debut today of snowboarding, along with snowmobiles, Poppermost is looking to set Snow apart from everything else in the extreme sports genre — including another indie competitor, HB Studios' upcoming Mark McMorris Infinite Air. Poppermost originally launched Snow on Windows PC and Linux via Steam Early Access in October 2013, and more than 500,000 registered users have tried the game since then. The studio counts 100,000 monthly active users on the platform. And of the 4,400-plus reviews Snow has received on Steam, 73 percent are positive, illustrating the strong connection that...

Monster Factory: Forming a think tank with Second Life's best and brightest

SUPPORTED BY 101896859 totino s text logo
Watch on YouTube | Subscribe to Polygon on YouTube The re-election campaign for the Boy-Mayor of Second Life didn't exactly start out with a bang. That is, of course, not the fault of campaign manager and sponsor Totino's — that's just politics. In this, the second episode of our three-part Second Life, Second Chances Monster Factory miniseries, we're doing a little bit of course correcting. First off: We need to figure out why the Boy-Mayor turned into a teen, and then a ghost, and then some weird mutant version of himself. Second off: We need to find some politically-minded individuals against whom we can hone our otherwise directionless platform. Third off: We have to deactivate Adult Content in Second Life. Because, like, damn.

Overwatch's newest video brings you Soldier: 76 — but not Sombra

Overwatch's last of four animated shorts reacquaints us with Soldier 76. This is either a spoiler or a time-saver: It doesn't bring you "Sombra," a rumored character that many fans of the new shooter had anticipated. On Thursday a NeoGAF user put together an impressive string of clues that seemed to point toward a new character reveal. However, Overwatch's official channel today put out the Soldier: 76 flick, calling it "our fourth and final animated short for this season." So Sombra may have to wait until another time. Anyway, Soldier: 76 is pure chaotic-goodness, the gold-hearted, grizzled vet who will never abandon his mission. His origin trailer debuted in July (it's below) and positions him as a pivotal figure in the Overwatch story: commander of the good guys, distrusted or...

Digging deep into the historical secrets of the Assassin's Creed trailer

I'll admit it: My first reaction when the Assassin's Creed movie trailer dropped was to run screaming in the other direction. I didn't watch it until days after it went up because I was so nervous about whether I would like it or not. I know I was being irrational, but "irrational" describes my love for Assassin's Creed in a nutshell. Video game movies have a history of not being that great (understatement of the century). I also hadn't been particularly swayed by any of the previous promotional materials for the film. Compared to the optimism and relative cheer of Assassin's Creed Syndicate, the Assassin's Creed film looked, and still looks, pretty grim. This is all to say that I am a fool! I forgot how cool it is to look into a trailer and get a glimpse of what the filmmakers have...

Uncharted 4 developers explain why they added accessibility options to the game

If you go into the options menu for Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, you'll find a term that's relatively rare in video game menus, especially as an entire section: accessibility. Naughty Dog went out of its way to make Uncharted 4 accessible to as wide an audience as possible, and the effort began with a conversation between a developer at the studio and a gamer with a disability. Josh Straub is the editor-in-chief of DAGERS (Disabled Accessibility for Gaming Entertainment Rating System), a website that provides reviews of video games based on their accessibility features. In a video produced by Sony, Straub and Alexandria Neonakis, a user interface designer at Naughty Dog, told the heartbreaking story of his experience playing Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Must Read ...

Hearthstone is even better when you can play it co-op

We already sang the praises of Hearthstone's surprising and fun co-op boss battle Tavern Brawl when it first showed up late last year. But is it still fun six months later? Yep! Or at least, it is when you can play with a buddy. In the video above, taken from our Facebook Live stream yesterday, we once again learn the ropes of taking on the big bad Gearmaster Mechazod. I won't spoil whether or not we succeed, but it's safe to say there are some struggles along the way. For more Hearthstone goofiness, check out our full playlist on YouTube.

The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine trailer showcases the pastoral region of Toussaint

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's second and final expansion, Blood and Wine, takes place in a new region called Toussaint, and you can explore the idyllic land in a new trailer from developer CD Projekt Red. It's perhaps no coincidence that the studio released the trailer today, which is the one-year anniversary of The Witcher 3's debut. Toussaint has an Old World feel to it, having been inspired by the south of France and the Piedmont region of Italy. Unlike the other regions in The Witcher 3, Toussaint is essentially untouched by war. However, a beast is terrorizing the land, and only Geralt of Rivia can tackle this deadly mystery. CD Projekt Red says that Blood and Wine will offer 20-30 hours of content. For more on The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine, which launches May 31, read our in-depth...

Watch Zero Escape creator Kotaru Uchikoshi play Super Mario Maker

There are few games that better fit the label "cult classic" than Kotaru Uchikoshi's Zero Escape series. First, there was 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors, a Nintendo DS visual novel that gained a following in the West almost entirely from a combination of word of mouth and a few strong reviews from critics. Its follow-up, Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward, was a similar story — it was well-loved by those who played it, and for a time, it seemed like progress on a a third Zero Escape game had stalled completely, largely for budgetary reasons. Now, a few years later, the third Zero Escape game is on its way: Zero Time Dilemma, a continuation of the series due out this June featuring a cast of new and returning characters and an all-new, cinematic 3D art style. On a recent trip...

Maize is an adventure game about sentient corn — no, really

It's nice to see video games get weird every once in a while, and Maize is the latest example of that. Billed as a game about "sentient corn," this first-person title takes you to the American heartland for a strange adventure. Maize is being developed by Toronto-based Finish Line Games, the indie studio behind Cel Damage HD. Its debut trailer, which you can watch above, introduces one of its oddball characters: a cantankerous cornstalk who doesn't have time for a crow's nonsense (or anyone's, apparently). Players will also encounter a Russian robot bear that takes after Teddy Ruxpin, except with a more ill-tempered personality. The farm where Maize takes place is abandoned, but the place hides an underground research facility that is very much active — in fact, the corn comes alive...

Take another look at the beautiful world of Final Fantasy 15

In March, Square Enix debuted tons of new footage from Final Fantasy 15. While the game trailers, movie announcements and anime episode quickly made it online after the live Uncovered: Final Fantasy 15 event, the developer waited until now to upload the video above. The "World of Wonder" footage was worth the wait: It offers three minutes of sightseeing across the game's many vistas. Don't expect to see Noctis or his friends in the video; this one is solely about the places players get to explore in the upcoming PlayStation 4 and Xbox One game. These include kingdoms hidden in the mountains, canal-filled cities and dark sewers. Final Fantasy fans have gotten a sense of Final Fantasy 15's world thanks to two separate demos and the debut installment of the prequel anime. They'll have to...
