Hearthstone is even better when you can play it co-op

We already sang the praises of Hearthstone's surprising and fun co-op boss battle Tavern Brawl when it first showed up late last year. But is it still fun six months later? Yep! Or at least, it is when you can play with a buddy. In the video above, taken from our Facebook Live stream yesterday, we once again learn the ropes of taking on the big bad Gearmaster Mechazod. I won't spoil whether or not we succeed, but it's safe to say there are some struggles along the way. For more Hearthstone goofiness, check out our full playlist on YouTube.

World of Warcraft's most recent expansion now part of base game

The fifth and most recent World of Warcraft expansion, Warlords of Draenor, is now available as part of the base game. A member of Blizzard Entertainment's customer support confirmed that all players have access to the add-on content after a Reddit user noticed it was no longer up for sale online. Warlords of Draenor cannot be bought on its own at retailers or on Battle.net, Blizzard said. A boost bringing characters to level 90 included with previously purchased, individual copies of the expansion may still be claimed by those customers, however. That Warlords of Draenor now comes included with World of Warcraft is typical for the popular massively multiplayer online game. All five expansion packs have been folded into the basic game, which costs $20 before a monthly subscription...

Homefront: The Revolution review

Homefront: The Revolution lacks the one thing required for a successful uprising: passion. The out-gunned, outnumbered insurgency trope is a shooter staple. Most recently, the Far Cry franchise has repopularized it, toppling militaristic dictatorships in foreign lands. But what about taking back America from an oppressive invader? Beginning with the first game in 2011, the Homefront franchise has attempted to capture the spirit of '80s movie Red Dawn — even going so far as to work with that film's director and co-writer John Milius as a "story consultant" — with mixed results. The second game in the series, Homefront: The Revolution, continues this trend of subversive mediocrity. Once the action starts, Homefront: The Revolution settles into dull missions and gameplay I...

See Warcraft's trailer done with World of Warcraft's visuals

The Warcraft movie looks intriguing and sounds faithful to the 22-year-old series' lore, but all of its trailers seem at least a bit alienated from the familiar because it's a live-action take on something with a very colorful, distinctive style. Here to bridge that gap is a shot-for-shot recreation of the trailer using Warcraft assets. The trailer, by Ivan Kuzkin, doesn't feature any dialogue but it does match up the important sequences of the launch trailer, many with perfect fidelity (such as Lothar leaping aboard his flying mount). If you want a closer look, Kuzkin supplied this side-by-side comparison of key shots. Warcraft premieres, at long last, on June 10. Perhaps not coincidentally, World of Warcraft's next expansion, Legion, arrives this summer.

We show off our favorite Hearthstone: Whispers of the Old Gods decks so far

Hearthstone's Whispers of the Old Gods expansion has been out for a few weeks now, but in a lot of ways the new meta for the game is still settling. Everyone's trying bizarre new decks, and even bad players like us are having a blast testing what works. In the video above, taken from our Facebook Live stream yesterday, we play a couple of games, showing off four of the decks we've been loving thus far. The old god C'Thun is represented, as is our old friend Sky Cap'n Kragg. We even have a druid versus druid showdown with wildly different decks. If you enjoy the video above, you can check out more Hearthstone wackiness on our full YouTube playlist.

Hands-on with Shiny, the nonviolent platformer

The second-best thing about Shiny is what you don't do. But the best things about Shiny are all of the things you can see behind it. Shiny is the product of Garage 227 Studios, a game maker based in Sao Paulo, Brazil, which is about as far away from the mainstream metropolises of development as you can imagine. And yet, the tiny team there is on the verge of releasing Shiny on Steam, thanks to community support from Steam Greenlight,  and Xbox One, thanks to Microsoft's self-publishing for independent developers, ID@XBOX. Garage 227 is a, well, shining example of the democratization of the enormous changes distribution and publishing that have emerged in the last few years. Gone are the days of teaming up with publishers and console platform owners granting tokens to publishers....

An African-American competitor faces foul abuse on a DreamHack chat stream.

Racism, Hearthstone and Twitch

Miller, who plays as TerrenceM for Gale Force eSports, fought his way through to the finals of DreamHack in Austin on Sunday. DreamHack is a long-standing series of gaming contests and digital festivals that take place around the world. In previous tournaments, Miller was generally eliminated early. In these finals, he played against the highly respected Keaton "Chakki" Gill, and lost 3-2. Miller was happy with his performance, and with his second place. But his memory of the tournament is always going to be tainted. During the Twitch livestream of his performance, and the interviews that followed, Miller, who is African-American, was the subject of a torrent of racist abuse on the stream's chat panel. The abuse included hateful language targeting African-Americans, as well as...

If you could only put two cards in your Hearthstone deck, what would they be?

This week's Tavern Brawl challenge is one of the best in Hearthstone history, and we had a ton of fun with it on our Facebook Live stream earlier today. However, if you weren't able to tune in live, we've got you covered now. This week, the Tavern Brawl is titled "Top Two," and players are challenged to pick only two cards from the entire Hearthstone collection. Once they get in a game, their deck will be filled with 15 copies of each of the two chosen cards. This means you can have 15 of one particularly powerful spell, 15 of any legendary minion in the game or ... hey, even 15 shieldbearers. That last one is a better idea than you might think. Check out our video of the Tavern Brawl above, and bounce over to our full YouTube playlist for even more Hearthstone antics. We'll be...

We Happy Few is about drugs and Nazis and whatever you want it to be

With a mixture of live-action and computer-generated footage, it introduces a hyper-stylized world reminiscent of 1960s Britain. Everybody in We Happy Few's seemingly idyllic town looks happy. They saunter down the streets, giggling, laughing. For some reason, though, everybody's wearing a mask. Also, they're on drugs. Lots and lots of psychedelic drugs. The player isn't high, everybody around him knows it, and nobody likes it. Especially the guy who beats him out of his house and onto the street with a frying pan. Also the guy who knocks him unconscious with a shovel isn't a fan, either. I didn't know what We Happy Few was about, exactly, but in less than 90 seconds, I knew I wanted to know more. A few months later, in a faraway setting accidentally tied to the...

World Esports Association seemingly leaked, includes major esports teams and brands

In a post on the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive sub-Reddit today, someone leaked the picture of a poster above. This image appears to reveal the existence of something called the World Esports Association, or WESA. The Redditor was then accused of leaking a major announcement and deleted the image. So what is WESA? The mystery figure who leaked the image did not provide that information. However, it's clear from the picture that this Association includes some big names in the esports world, including tournament organizer ESL and major esports teams such as Fnatic, Na'vi, Ninjas in Pyjamas, Mouseesports, G2, Virtus Pro and more. All of the team organizations listed have devoted Counter-Strike teams, though many also have teams focused on other popular competitive games such as League...

Kathy Rain review

Kathy Rain is a throwback to adventure games in the LucasArts style. Thanks to the work of publisher-studios like Wadjet Eye, this has become something of a sub-genre itself. Pixelated graphics and an ever-expanding inventory may have been a revelation when games like the Blackwell series and Gemini Rue revived them a few years back, but now they're something more akin to a cottage industry. Without the novelty of that nostalgia, games like Kathy Rain stand on the merits of their storytelling. Luckily, Kathy's got a story that, despite some reservations, is worth hearing out. Kathy gets plenty of opportunity to grow and evolve Our titular heroine is a somewhat unconventional choice for a protagonist in a genre usually fronted by well-meaning buffoons or lantern-jawed everymen....

Heroes of the Storm ranked-play overhaul kicks off in June with first season

Heroes of the Storm's ranked play is getting a complete overhaul in mid-June, Blizzard said on Friday, introducing the game's first ranked season with new tiers and divisions and other features. The tier-and-division system, broadly speaking will separate players according to skill level and then, within that, note how close those players are to being promoted or demoted to a different tier, ranging from Bronze to Diamond. The top tier, called Master, will display rank differently. Masters will have a badge showing how many rank points they have accumulated in that season's Master league. Grand Masters are Master league members who are the top 500 point earners in their region. Their badge will note that numerical rank. The rank is updated daily. As a result of the new tiering...

Report: Big-time German soccer club acquires spot in League of Legends championship series

Here's a twist: an esports league has a new team: a soccer team. A German soccer club, that is, one of the nation's largest. Esports Observer reports that FC Schalke 04 has acquired a place European League of Legends Championship Series, replacing Elements. The deal has not been formally announced but Esports Observer cited multiple sources saying the deal had gone through. FC Schalke 04 is not the first professional sports club to get into esports. Others in European soccer also sponsor teams and just this week West Ham United F.C. of the Barclays Premier League signed up an esports professional to represent it at FIFA tournaments (the video game series, not the global organization). Eports Observer notes Schalke's move is the first significant foray into a top-tier league, however. ...

Here's what Khadgar looks like in the Warcraft movie

Warcraft's latest trailer showcases another mainstay character of the 22-year-old franchise. Here is Khadgar the mage, portrayed by Ben Schnetzer in his first major role. In Warcraft's canon, Khadgar is the apprentice of Medivh and commands the Alliance's expedition into Draenor. In Warcraft II he closed the Dark Portal but was trapped in Draenor when it went kaboom. He was presumed dead, but really, when is that ever permanent. Khadgar went on to several more appearances in Warcraft, and will return in World of Warcraft's next expansion, Legion, coming this summer. Warcraft, as in the movie, will premiere June 10.
