Reports suggest he went on a rampage with a high-powered AR15 rifle and shot at bystanders before police gunned him down. He killed Eugene Linscomb and critically injured father Byron Wilson (right), who police say was trying to fight back and stop the deadly attack. His father said he was suffering PTSD.

Cincinnati Zoo Director Thane Maynard confirmed the gorilla did not appear to be attacking the child, but he described it as 'an extremely strong animal in an agitated situation' before supporting the animal response team's decision to kill Harambe. The incident, which was captured on cell phone, has sparked an outcry of emotion, with thousands of mourners branding it a 'senseless death'.

Was Harambe going to harm the boy who fell into his enclosure? We'll never know. Harambe was shot dead by staff of Cincinnati Zoo while standing next to the distressed four-year-old.

Florida boy severely injured after being bit on back of leg by 'five to six' ft shark 

A 13-year-old boy was seriously injured after being attacked by a shark on a Florida beach. Lifeguards estimate the shark that bit the unidentified boy was about five to six feet long. The shark latched on to the backside of the boy's right knee and his calf before swimming off. The boy and his stepfather were swimming in chest-deep water about two-feet deep on Sunday afternoon when the shark attacked. Although the boy's injuries were deemed 'severe' they are not believed to be life-threatening.

Endangered whale found dead on bow of cruise ship entering Alaska port

A cruise ship arrived at an Alaska port carrying a dead, endangered whale on its bow. The Zaandam, a Holland America Line cruise ship, was preparing to dock in Seward just after 5am Sunday when the juvenile fin whale was spotted on top of the ship's bulbous bow, the part of the bow under the water line. Company spokeswoman Sally Andrews said in an email to the Associated Press that the whale wasn't there a half-hour earlier.

Man casts his bait 300 yards into the Pacific with a homemade air cannon

One man showed off his handy air pressurized bait launcher in San Diego County, California, (main) while sidestepping the rules prohibiting overhead casting at Oceanside pier (inset). In the 16-second clip, the man effortlessly launches the bait about 300yards into the Pacific Ocean with his foot on the trigger. While bait launchers can retail for hundreds of dollars online, this man told amused onlookers he built his own for under $100. Not unlike homemade potato cannons, the launchers are often homemade contraptions consisting of pipes and other repurposed hardware like sprinkler valves and air compressors. Fishing enthusiasts have taken to online forums and YouTube videos with instructions on how to build the DIY cannons.

Lazy dad uses radio-controlled car to pull twins around in cart

Why waste energy when you can have machines working for you? A Texas dad was filmed pulling his twin sons around in a cart behind a radio-controlled car.  The video was uploaded to YouTube by the two-year-old boys' mother, Julie Thomas. The siblings definitely do not seem to mind their dad's slothful decision. In the footage, they are seen giggling as the Traxxas car pulls them forward in a red cart. But when the RC accidentally backs up on the cart, the twins do seem a little startled.

Video shows rescuers in Sri Lanka saving a baby elephant after it fell down a drain

Footage shows the rescue team in Hambantota, Sri Lanka, desperately trying to free the adorable baby elephant after it became trapped by the drain, eventually pulling it back up to surface. It is unclear how the elephant got down the drain, and it was taken to a nearby animal hospital for attention after it was rescued.

Repair man is sucked into escalator in front of horrified shoppers in China 

The unnamed workman was pulled into the device and miraculously managed to avoid being crushed to death by the machinery as only his head remained visible from the outside. He was reportedly repairing the device in Beibei District of Chongqing, a major city in south-west China, when he accidentally fell into the escalator. The man was rushed to hospital following his ordeal, where his condition remains unknown.
