The swinging symmetry between non-centrosymmetric BaNiSn3 and centrosymmetric BaAl4 structure types in the compounds RECuGa3 (RE = La−Nd, Sm−Gd) at room temperature has been established with the help of detailed diffraction studies. The compounds show temperature-dependent multiple structural phase transitions from BaNiSn3 (space group I4mm) to Rb5Hg19 type (space group I4/m) above 400 K followed by another transition to the Cu3Au structure type (space group Pm3̅m) above 700 K.
