Earth from Space: Lisbon, Portugal, and surroundings

In this composite image you can see Lisbon in Portugal and surroundings, imaged by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) aboard Landsat 8. The images were taken December 3rd, 2015 at 4:40pm GMT.

Lisbon

Lisbon (Portuguese: Lisboa) is the capital of Portugal. It has a population of about 552,000 people. The metropolitan area has a population of over 2.8 million people. Lisbon is located at the estuary (https://goo.gl/gcp6Pn) of the Tagus River (Portuguese: Tejo), the estuary is called "Mar da Palha" (Sea of Straw) by the Portuguese. With a length of 1,038 kilometers (645 miles) the Tagus is the longest river on the Iberian Peninsula (https://goo.gl/I6gC90), it empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world (https://goo.gl/6a8qMg).

Technical Data

For those interested, here the technical data for this image. The image is a combination of a pansharpened OLI Band 4-3-2 (natural color) image with an OLI Band 7-5-1 (SWIR, NIR) image to get more colors and distinction for vegetation. The resulting colors are near natural but slightly oversaturated and contrast is slightly enhanced. Image scale is 30 meters/pixel.

Earth from Space: New York City Thermal Infrared Overlay

In this composite image you can see parts of New York City and New Jersey, imaged by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) with a thermal infrared overlay taken by the Thermal InfraRed Sensor (TIRS) aboard Landsat 8. The images were taken July 25th, 2015 at 3:39pm GMT.

When I processed this image I was surprised about the distribution of hot spots. I expected Central Park to be as cool as it is because dense vegetation prevents urban heat islands (https://goo.gl/X14sgO). But although the rest of Manhattan has a somewhat sparse vegetation the surface temperatures are cool in comparison to other areas. At first I thought I made a mistake yet when comparing this image to the infrared image in the article linked below they show a similar distribution of hot spots. Take a look here and read more about urban heat islands:

Technical Data

For those interested, here the technical data for this image. The underlying image is a panchromatic OLI Band 8 image, the overlay is a combination of Thermal InfraRed Sensor (TIRS, https://goo.gl/bAzPDO) Bands 10 and 11 images. The resulting colors represent the surface temperature from purple-blue (cool) to yellow-red (warm). Image scale is 15 meters/pixel. Image resolution for the underlying image is 15 meters, the thermal infrared data has a resolution of 100 meters.

Irrawaddy Delta, Myanmar | International Space Station
Jeff Williams: "You know what a mouth of a river is, but take a look at the mouths of the Irrawaddy Delta."

The Irrawaddy Delta or Ayeyarwady Delta lies in the Irrawaddy Division, the lowest expanse of land in Burma that fans out from the limit of tidal influence at Myan Aung to the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, 290 km to the south at the mouth of the Ayeyarwady River.

Burma, is a sovereign state in Southeast Asia bordered by Bangladesh, India, China, Laos and Thailand.

Bering Sea Ice, Russia | International Space Station
Tim Peake: "Last of the Bering Sea ice melting along this part of Russia’s coastline."

The Bering Sea is a marginal sea of the Pacific Ocean. It comprises a deep water basin, which then rises through a narrow slope into the shallower water above the continental shelves. The Bering Sea is separated from the Gulf of Alaska by the Alaska Peninsula. It covers over 2,000,000 square kilometers (770,000 sq mi) and is bordered on the east and northeast by Alaska, on the west by Russian Far East and Kamchatka Peninsula, on the south by the Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands and on the far north by the Bering Strait, which connects the Bering Sea to the Arctic Ocean's Chukchi Sea.

Bristol Bay is the portion of the Bering Sea which separates the Alaska Peninsula from mainland Alaska. The Bering Sea is named for Vitus Bering, a Danish navigator in Russian service, who in 1728 was the first European to systematically explore it, sailing from the Pacific Ocean northward to the Arctic Ocean. Take a Splash Into the Cosmos

Millions of galaxies populate the patch of sky known as the COSMOS field, short for Cosmic Evolution Survey, a portion of which is shown here. Even the smallest dots in this image are galaxies, some up to 12 billion light-years away.

The Helix Nebula | NASA's GALEX Space Telescope
The famous Helix Nebula in ultraviolet from NASA's GALEX mission.
The Helix Nebula, also known as The Helix, NGC 7293, is a large planetary nebula (PN) located in the constellation Aquarius. Discovered by Karl Ludwig Harding, probably before 1824, this object is one of the closest to the Earth of all the bright planetary nebulae. The Helix Nebula has sometimes been referred to as the "Eye of God" in pop culture, as well as the "Eye of Sauron".

The Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) is an orbiting ultraviolet space telescope launched on April 28, 2003, and operated until early 2012. GALEX's first observation was dedicated to the crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia, being images in the constellation Hercules taken on May 21, 2003. This region was selected because it had been directly overhead the shuttle at the time of its last contact with the NASA Mission Control Center.

The Bubble Nebula

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope turned 26 years old last week and astronomers released imagery of an immense bubble being blown into space by a a super-hot, massive star. The stellar wind of hot gases released by the star moves at over four million miles per hour and sweeps up the cold, interstellar gas in front of it, forming the outer edge of the bubble.

The Bubble Nebula is seven light-years across and 7,100 light-years away from the Earth in the constellation Cassiopeia. It was discovered in 1787 by William Herschel, a prominent British astronomer. Hubble's Wide Field Camera-3 imaged the nebula with unprecedented clarity in February 2016 and was used to create this animated flythrough.
