Saturn's Moon Epimetheus: Hard Knock Life | NASA Cassini
May 9, 2016: Life is hard for a little moon. Epimetheus, seen here with Saturn in the background, is lumpy and misshapen, thanks in part to its size and formation process. Epimetheus did not form with all of those craters in place—rather, bombardment over the eons has left this tiny moon's surface heavily pitted.

Epimetheus (70 miles or 113 kilometers across) is too small to have sufficient self-gravity to form itself into a round shape, and it has too little internal heat to sustain ongoing geological activity. Thus, its battered shape provides hints about its formation, and the myriad craters across its surface bear testament to the impacts it has suffered over its long history.

North on Epimetheus is up and rotated 5 degrees to the left. The image was taken in visible light with the Cassini spacecraft narrow-angle camera on Dec. 6, 2015.

The view was obtained at a distance of approximately 1,670 miles (2,690 kilometers) from Epimetheus. Image scale on Epimetheus is 520 feet (160 meters) per pixel.

The Cassini mission is a cooperative project of NASA, ESA (the European Space Agency) and the Italian Space Agency. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. The Cassini orbiter and its two onboard cameras were designed, developed and assembled at JPL. The imaging operations center is based at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colorado.

The Helix Nebula | NASA's GALEX Space Telescope
The famous Helix Nebula in ultraviolet from NASA's GALEX mission.
The Helix Nebula, also known as The Helix, NGC 7293, is a large planetary nebula (PN) located in the constellation Aquarius. Discovered by Karl Ludwig Harding, probably before 1824, this object is one of the closest to the Earth of all the bright planetary nebulae. The Helix Nebula has sometimes been referred to as the "Eye of God" in pop culture, as well as the "Eye of Sauron".

The Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) is an orbiting ultraviolet space telescope launched on April 28, 2003, and operated until early 2012. GALEX's first observation was dedicated to the crew of the Space Shuttle Columbia, being images in the constellation Hercules taken on May 21, 2003. This region was selected because it had been directly overhead the shuttle at the time of its last contact with the NASA Mission Control Center.

Irrawaddy Delta, Myanmar | International Space Station
Jeff Williams: "You know what a mouth of a river is, but take a look at the mouths of the Irrawaddy Delta."

The Irrawaddy Delta or Ayeyarwady Delta lies in the Irrawaddy Division, the lowest expanse of land in Burma that fans out from the limit of tidal influence at Myan Aung to the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, 290 km to the south at the mouth of the Ayeyarwady River.

Burma, is a sovereign state in Southeast Asia bordered by Bangladesh, India, China, Laos and Thailand.

What happens to the children of Astronauts?

STOCKTON — There was a special moment during University of the Pacific’s School of Engineering and Computer Science Diploma and Hooding Ceremony on Saturday at Knoles Lawn when 21-year-old Julio Hernandez walked across the stage into the arms of his father.
Jose Hernandez, a former astronaut and current member of the university’s board of regents, had the honor of hooding his son, who earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering management and a master’s degree in engineering science. Julio Hernandez now hopes to follow in the footsteps of his father, who served as the flight engineer aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery in 2009.
“One small step toward a larger goal of becoming an astronaut,” Julio Hernandez said.
Julio Hernandez is one of about 2,000 members of the Class of 2016 at Pacific. A commencement ceremony was held Saturday morning at Spanos Center followed by several diploma and hooding ceremonies across campus in the afternoon.
Julio Hernandez now is preparing to enroll at Purdue University, where he has accepted a full scholarship to pursue a Ph.D.
“That was his way of telling me he wants to be an astronaut, because we hadn’t discussed it before,” Jose Hernandez said. “I said, ‘Why Purdue?’ He said, ‘Well, dad, I did my research, and I found that the greatest number of astronauts graduated from Purdue University.’ ”
Jose Hernandez was born in French Camp. As a child, he worked with his family and other farm workers throughout California, harvesting crops. He attended many schools as his family moved from one town to another and was not able to speak English until he was 12.
Jose Hernandez graduated from Franklin High School in Stockton and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Pacific. He later earned a master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering from University of California, Santa Barbara.
Jose Hernandez was rejected by NASA 11 times before he was accepted for the 2004 astronaut candidate class. On Aug. 28, 2009, he ventured into space on the STS-128 mission to the International Space Station. During that voyage, he became the first person in space to tweet in Spanish.
Julio Hernandez said he was inspired by his father’s story.
“I get a lot of my hard work and my ethic from my dad,” he said. “To become an astronaut from a migrant farmworker, there has to be so much fortitude and drive to achieve history, and I’d like to think I have a little bit of that.”
Julio Hernandez is the oldest of six children in his family, including one adopted daughter. His father said he has set a fine example for his brothers and sisters.
“The only requirement I give my kids is that I want them to graduate from college with a four-year degree,” Jose Hernandez said. “I don’t care if it’s underwater basket weaving. If that’s what you love, knock yourself out — just graduate from college. I certainly don’t put the pressure on them, saying, ‘Hey, you have to be like your old man.’”
And yet that’s exactly what his oldest son is aiming to achieve.
“If he could do it, why can’t I?” Julio Hernandez said. “And why can’t I go farther?”

Can I just give a penny to NASA directly? Seriously, if we had a fund source we could give $1 towards the manned mission to Mars project, NASA would be sending a rocket with people by next year.
We strive to increase NASA's funding to 1% by encouraging popular support for NASA through education and outreach.

#NASA Received an #SOS #Call from Another #Galaxy?
You can watch the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziu4nM7C_zg

NASA detected, intercepted, and decoded a mathematically-based distress signal from a purportedly doomed planetoid outside our own galaxy.

The signal was detected in January of 1998 but, however and as it might be expected, it took many years to properly decode the message.

NASA experts claim to have intercepted an intergalactic distress call from an alien civilization that had already peaked and was actually dying when saber-tooth tigers still roamed the earth.

The 80,000-year-old SOS was received and digitally recorded in late January 1998.

But only in 2011 have radio astronomers and language experts found the key to the complex mathematics-based language that enabled them to translate the 'frantic plea for help'.

The world press has been suspiciously silent about the startling message, though lengthy scientific reports are scheduled for publication in two professional journals, Radio Astronomy and Universe.

According to a highly placed NASA source in Houston, Texas, noted Russian superior officer Gen. in ex-Soviet Union’s army, Viktor Kulikov was leading a United Nations research team from a state-operated observatory 50 miles northwest of Moscow. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viktor_Kulikov

Gen. Victor Kulikov told Universe that the signal emanated from a point beyond the galaxy nearest to our own, Andromeda, and was sent by beings that had apparently achieved a civilization no more advanced than our own here on Earth.

“The simple fact that we received and decoded the message proves beyond any doubt that their knowledge and technology were, at the very best, within our reach.” Dr. Kulikov explained.

“And while there are years of study ahead of us, I can say with certainty that the death of their civilization was not the result of some cosmic catastrophe. It was the result of the civilization turning on itself, possibly with devastating nuclear weaponry.”

Dr Kulikov flatly refused to provide either of the magazines with a transcript of the message, but he did say it began with the plea, “Help us,” and went on to give data pinpointing the exact position of the doomed planet.

There was a quite lucid account of apocalyptic devastation, hellish explosions, widespread death and terminal illnesses,” he said.

“A Shower of meteors? Perhaps. But what stikes me, and this is just a feeling, is an underlying acceptance of guilt. It’s as if the senders of the message are acknowledging blame for what happened.”

"Whatever it was, they apparently had no means to evacuate the remaining population. Interplanetary space travel was available to them, but only on a very limited level. The message makes it very clear that they were trapped on their world,” said Dr. Kulikov.

The article was written by two journals. NASA simply managed to not get much publicity. At that time the newspapers wrote very little about this issue. When after thirteen years managed to decrypt the message fails to hide from the media.

Proxima Centauri: The Closest Star
Explanation: Does the closest star to our Sun have planets? No one is sure -- but you can now follow frequent updates of a new search that is taking place during the first few months of this year. The closest star, Proxima Centauri, is the nearest member of the Alpha Centauri star system. Light takes only 4.24 years to reach us from Proxima Centauri. This small red star, captured in the center of the featured image by the Hubble Space Telescope, is so faint that it was only discovered in 1915 and is only visible through a telescope. Telescope-created X-shaped diffraction spikes surround Proxima Centauri, while several stars further out in our Milky Way Galaxy are visible in the background. The brightest star in the Alpha Centauri system is quite similar to our Sun, has been known as long as recorded history, and is the third brightest star in the night sky. The Alpha Centauri system is primarily visible from Earth's Southern Hemisphere. Starting last week, the European Southern Observatory's Pale Red Dot project began investigating slight changes in Proxima Centauri to see if they result from a planet -- possibly an Earth-sized planet. Although unlikely, were a modern civilization found living on a planet orbiting Proxima Centauri, its proximity makes it a reasonable possibility that humanity could communicate with them.
