Abandoned Boat

The Critique:

Motion literally dances its way across the surface of this photograph. ICM (intentional camera motion)creates arcs of color on the hillsides mimic the abandoned boat pulled ashore in the cove. Sandy beaches bring rich color that creates shapes and serve as pathways for my eye. Nice balance and spatial relationships. Contrasting colors add energy and the stunning light reigns supreme.

What I have learned:

Play with new scenes and shapes. Explore opportunities.

Toward the Bluff

The Critique:

A vaguely diagonal sweep of green pulls my eye into this ICM (intentional camera movement) photograph. The green seems suspended on a sea of blue. I like the shapes. Lots of triangular forms of blue and green. The colors add a mystical touch with the hues of different shades adding a touch or Mother Nature’s whimsy to the scene. Nice spatial relationships and compositional weights. Light serves as both a path and illuminates details amidst the motion.

What I had learned:

Think about things differently and then shoot.

Lady in a Red Shirt

The Critique:

And impressionistic scene radiates vibrant colors that form shapes and patterns and tell the story. The humans are front and center, surrounded by the vertical rise of shrubs and buildings. Light glances off of surfaces adding more dazzle to the scene. Spatial relationships are strong and everything is well balanced. I like the boldness and simplicity that the ICM motion brings.

What I had learned:

Every day things can take on amazing drama when captured with imagination.

Making Waves

The Critique:

Winds rocks the Napa River into gentle waves that are intensified by spectacular light and a bit of ICM – intentional camera movement. Silky smooth textures mix with details of light and dark creating interesting patterns and textures on the water’s surface. Rich hues of blue and green join brilliant light in a painterly flow of color. Spatial relationships are absent but they aren’t important in this abstract view of the river.

What I had learned.

I pay attention when something catches my eye.

Flight 5

The Critique:

An egret floats into negative space an elegant addition to the early morning sky. Lovely gradient tones converge toward the bird giving a subtle frame within a frame and fixing its presence in place. Slight motion drapes behind adding life to the shot - a look and feel of forward progress. Nice balance in the third of the frame. Soft light illuminates the subject in a soft wash.

What I had learned:

Kudos to those who shoot birds well!

Savor the Moment

The Critique:

Rocks are steadfast in the sand as water sweeps out to sea. Shapes and lines are dramatic on both the horizontal and diagonal planes. They serve as highways for the viewer’s eye – paths into the infinite beauty of this watery scene. Lovely hues of pinks and blues grace delicate textures. Sunlight is generous as it reveals rich details. A simple spot – small in stature – is worthy of contemplation.

What I had learned:

Hone in on the heart of the scene.

Gull Whispers

The Critique:

Morning whispers and the gulls gently join in softly on a tender breeze. Hints of earth and sky reflect is the wash of seawater on the shoreline. Blues and pinks form lines and shapes that anchor the birds. ICM is used to express the day and not document it. Details are prominent enough to identify elements but leave much to the viewer’s imagination. A nice intended triangular shape is created by the three birds and adds a bit of strength to the composition. Lighting is soft but adequate as the new day begins.

What I had learned:

Paint with the camera. Mother Nature provides me a nice palette of color to fill my canvas.

Inexplicable

The Critique:

I like it. Layers of inside space play with multiple layers of reflections all in a single frame. A fleeting moment that caught my eye and continues to hold it. I love the diagonal leading line that enters from lower left. It joins strong horizontal sweeps of space to create energy. The red/green color palette are opposites on the color wheel and here they create a sense of unease. Interesting shapes appear here and there as supporting points of interest but it is of course the two human figures who captivate and rule the scene. They have a grace of movement that is irresistible to my eye. It’s all quite inexplicable but it doesn’t matter. I find I’m fascinated.

What I had learned:

When something seems visually impossible, shoot it right away before it becomes something else.

Green are the Hills

The Critique:

Undulating green hillside rock ‘n roll a bit with ICM (intentional camera movement). Spectacular light plays with shapes and the mix creates patterns upon patterns adding energy to the shot. Vivid greens fade to pastel as the hills recede into the distance. Blue skies add nice color contrast as well as smooth textures in a dramatic diagonal sweep. Spatial relationships are defined in the abstract. Horizontal lines define space and give good paths for my eye to follow.

What I had learned:

Try new things.

Spin Cycle

The Critique:

Lines swirl and patterns form. Opposing shapes and bursts of light add tension and energy. Deep rich colors contribute substance to this watery shot. Abstracts are all about the feel of the scene – the enjoyment of a fragment of reality. I look deep and find wonderful textures and a world spiraling in delight. Spatial relationships are absent but balance is key. Without it, elements would simply whirl away.

What I had learned:

Imagine the possibilities.
